Why are other drivers "flashing" at Dd?

By flashing I mean their lights not their bits 🙈
The obvious answer is her lights don't work properly but we've checked and they are fine.
It only happens at night so it's not anyone warning her off a speed van.
She's a new driver restricted to 45mph (NI) and I've her app that tracks her driving score which is always high so she's not driving like a boy racer.
When she told me I thought she was maybe just mixing up the lights on oncoming traffic jumping when going over pop holes/speed bumps etc but I was in the car with her last night and it happened twice so I know she's telling the truth.
She drives a typical small new driver car and even though she's got the pass plates on and has to drive slow it's only ever oncoming cars that do it as they are passing her so it's not like it's knob drivers behind her getting frustrated by her driving.
I feel like I'm missing something really obvious here?

"They were adjusted correctly and notably, the bouts of drivers angrily flashing ties in well with tourist season and drivers un-used to long stretches of unlit country road. My sister now experiences same as shes got a much more modern car fairly recently."

can you get the lights changed on a new car? I might be getting one, are they all equipped with these nightmarish ones?

CormoranStrike · 11/08/2022 15:09

Are other drivers going over bumps so their lights jump, making it seem like they are flashing?

MordredsOrrery · 11/08/2022 15:10

Was the road particularly bumpy? The roads here are very poor (rural) and cars coming towards you that hit the bumps can look like they're flashing you.

Perhaps your DD is really popular and she knows lots of people?

SaintHelena · 11/08/2022 15:10

The weight in the car can make a difference or heavy luggage in the back

Chakraleaf · 11/08/2022 15:11

I've thought people were doing it to me, but the road was just bumpy!

housemaus · 11/08/2022 15:14

I'd say either bumpy roads (I think people are flashing all the time til I realise 3 in a row do it and it's just a bump) OR her headlights need tilting down a little bit cos they're blinding people even not on full beam?

ImWell · 11/08/2022 15:15

OP, I don’t think that you’ve responded to the fog lights question. Does she know when they are to be used (severely restricted visibility), or is she turning them on all the time?

This seems to be something of a fashion with young drivers.

MrsLeBouef · 11/08/2022 15:16

Are they LED lights?

lolarosea12 · 11/08/2022 15:19

The position of the seats in my car makes me think people are flashing lights at me all the time, its just the nature of the new lights in cars, especially when the road is bumpy

Greatfyl · 11/08/2022 14:14

Ah yes I missed that. I did actually have to read the OP twice because the app kept jumping around so I see I’ve missed some key info.

No need for the passive aggressive Hmm though, everyone makes mistakes - sorry you found mine particularly frustrating to you.

Clearly not the only one that's not reading the posts, if you had been too you'd have seen @Greatfyl corrected themselves a few posts higher up.

I noticed in the winter just gone the number of cars that had front lights but not rear , some cars (my own does this) will automatically put the front headlights on.

Late January , late evening , driver on the M25 blissfully unaware that her dark grey car was almost invisible (it was a woman, I saw as she went off eventually on a filter lane)
I did give her a quick dibdib of my lights but I was worried she'd think I was road raging her and it made bugger all difference Hmm

Oh that's interesting. My car has automatic lights, I assumed both front and rear went on automatically when they came on. I'll have to check the manual. Thank you for posting this.

WrongWayApricot · 11/08/2022 15:24

I got flashed by someone oncoming the other day during daytime. Looked like he was making circles with his hand to tell me something. I pulled over looked at the lights, the tyres, all over the front. Not a scooby what he wanted to tell me. I just carried on driving and thought the police will have to pull me over and tell me if there's an issue because I can't see anything. I don't think you'll get in trouble if you really couldn't know what was wrong, if anything is wrong.

I used to get that all the time
my old car just really right led lights and even though they weren’t on full beam they were blinding the drivers coming towards me
it’s frustrating

mind you I’d never flash someone after being followed and frightened by a disgruntled (male) driver

Crazykatie · 11/08/2022 15:39

Oh boy, there really should be a intelligence test for drivers, and their parent's

TokyoTen · 11/08/2022 15:41

Maybe lights on high beam as PP have said, or have you/her checked her road position? Is she too far over towards oncoming traffic?

cate16 · 11/08/2022 15:43

Yes to checking Daytime driving lights as PP has said. Took us a while to work out why we kept getting flashed at night.

Agreed, but you might want to look closer to home.

If you are going to criticize others, maybe have someone check your posts?

An apostrophe doesn’t mean “look out, here comes an s.”

Oblomov22 · 11/08/2022 15:47

You may be missing the point. Even on normal, not high beam, her lights might be too high and dazzling drivers. Go and get them checked, but explain it to mechanic and ask him to check them specifically for that issue.

gatehouseoffleet · 11/08/2022 15:47

IRememberXanadu · 11/08/2022 13:25

Could the other cars be driving over a bump and it 'looks' like they are flashing her but it's just the cars tipping up and down instead?

It could be this if you are sure her lights are ok (and they are not those ridiculous white ones that are far too bright - though to be fair not sure what you can do about those).

I used to think people were flashing me and got really annoyed about it, and then eventually I realised it was the bumps!

Brillant · 11/08/2022 15:53

Sorry didn't see but us it just men? I got flashed all time time as a 20 something, especially driving my mini - some cars make it more visible who is driving.
Used to drive me potty, but never happens now.

gatehouseoffleet · 11/08/2022 15:55

I was going to say that with the 45mph thing they might not realise she's a new driver until they get closer and are flashing her for being too slow, but you say it's only ever oncoming vehicles so it can't be that, and that also rules out the daylight lights being on (or rather the rear ones being off).

If you think her lights are fine, it must be bumps or she has the bright white lights and people don't like them. But as I said above, I don't know what you can do about those, the manufacturers refuse to change them despite feedback.

Why? I can't see that there's anything wrong with the OP's post, it's a reasonable thing to ask.
