Family of 4 - how many cases???

procrastinationstations · 10/08/2022 21:31

All adult sized here, 1 DH and 3 females (I think this makes a difference - just seen the accoutrements the teens need to take 😂).

We have 3 medium cases and one small hold-all. All fit to busting.

2 weeks in the sun. Quite a dressy place.

Also, DH takes a clean t-shirt for every day and night and 4 pairs of shoes/trainers plus 2 flip flops and 3 (yes, 3) types of shaver......

Sorry, posted too soon.

The girls have 4 toiletry bags each and the shoes......

Are we normal?? We all have ab ailocatiion of 23kgs each and will not make that.

It just looks like so much stuff!

Anyone else?

Way too much! DH can half his number of shirts and wear each shirt twice.
Don't need 4 toiletries bags each...! Less shoes.

LadyWithLapdog · 10/08/2022 21:38

OMG. We managed 2 weeks with 3 x 8kg cases plus handbag/small rucksacks. We had access to a washing machine. DH snd I shared a suitcase (one of those very light IT luggage) and the teens had one each. They even managed to carry curling tongs, while I made do with the very minimum.

supersonicspider · 10/08/2022 21:38

Don't take duplicates... one hair straighteners, don't need a toothpaste each.

Cynderella · 10/08/2022 21:46

We did a holiday a few years ago with teenage daughter, her friend and two sons. We all had a cabin bag each. No cases. Last holiday, just two of us. One 22kg case, one carry on case and a handbag.

I always wash clothes and dry on balconies. When kids were little, I used a washing machine, but now everyone washes their own, so only need clothes for three days. One pair of shoes to wear on plane and one pair in bag/case. Use hotel toiletries, but take suntan products, toothpaste, etc - one small bag each.
Phone, airpods, kindle each - kids took gameboy type consoles too. This year we took a firestick.

LadyWithLapdog · 10/08/2022 21:46

Although I only had half a suitcase allocated to me, I didn’t even get round to wearing half of mine as I’d put on too much weight in just a few days.

procrastinationstations · 10/08/2022 21:48

The girls don't have 2 of the same thing - only one uses hair tools.

I've packed the lightest I ever have (which is very pleasing and just as well....)

Way way too much!!!!

Playdoughcaterpillar · 10/08/2022 21:50

One suitcase around 15kg each person here for a week. It's included up to 23kg each so much easier to each have your own

mynameiscalypso · 10/08/2022 21:52

Sounds about right to me. So long as you can carry/wheel it all and it will fit in a car (or whatever mode of transport you're using), does it matter? We are two adults and one toddler and have two suitcases plus a generous hand luggage.

Frenchfancy · 10/08/2022 21:54

Just did 2 weeks in Greece. 2 young ladies myself and DH. Carry on only. It wasn't difficult and no-one complained.

LuubyLuu · 10/08/2022 21:56

It's the toiletries and shoes which take up room and are heavy, reduce those and you won't have to restrict the clothes.

But don't worry too much about it - sure people have competitions about how little they can get away with taking, but bugger it, you're on holiday! You want to dress up! You want to wear your nice clothes and look good!

Scabetty · 10/08/2022 21:56

Just did 2 weeks in Greece as 4 adults. 4 cases with 20kg in each roughly. My shoes went in ds’s case but we all had enough stuff to keep us going 😁

ScarlettDarling · 10/08/2022 21:59

Me, dh, 18 year old ds and 15 year old dd just did three weeks in the sun with 3 large cases and one medium case. Don’t know how people do it with just carry on?
We had 22kg allowance each and our luggage came in just under that.

ScarlettDarling · 10/08/2022 21:59

We did two weeks in the sun, not three like my post above says!

PuttingDownRoots · 10/08/2022 22:01

I'd make sure there's an outfit for each person in each case as a precaution for a case getting lost.

As long as you are within your baggage limit does it really matter if someone else goes for a month with just a pair of pants and a toothbrush in their pockets?

Fleur405 · 10/08/2022 22:03

Why on earth would anyone need two pairs of flip flop (on top of 4 pairs of shoes)??

You definitely don’t need all that stuff for two weeks!

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 10/08/2022 22:04

Blimey .. we are 5 (2 adults + 3 teens) and we have a carry on each for 10 days in Greece.

But then we are Londoners and I have definitely noticed the difference between teens from London / teens from outside London in terms of fashion demands.

It's a holiday not a fashion parade Grin

Orangello · 10/08/2022 22:07

sounds about right unless you want to spend half your holiday handwashing clothes.

Scabetty · 10/08/2022 22:08

We are London too but my dd and ds can fill a case to it’s max. We had a 26 kg allowance apparently but they thought it was 23 kg so packed light 😁

LadyWithLapdog · 10/08/2022 22:08

It’s not a competition to see how little you can take but IMO it’s silly to carry loads of clothes thousands of miles, clutter your space and bring them back without even wearing them. They’d need a wash on return anyway if they are crumpled or sandy. Makes the coming home more depressing when it then takes a week to wash and fold. Ok, less so just now as it’s so hot and they dry instantly.

Re shoes, for example, I wore trainers for the journey and walks and had a single pair of nice sandals which covered day & evening.

ThePug · 10/08/2022 22:09

We (DH, DS 6 and DS 3 and me) are away at the moment - flew with easyJet/back with Ryanair so didn't want to triple the cost of flights with luggage. We did one checked in case (20kg), 3 large carry ones (one wheels case and two trunkis) and 2 backpacks, one of which is kid sized as was packed purely with plane snacks 🤣. It's our last day tomorrow and I reckon we could've got away with at least a third less each. Glad we brought 3 x swimwear each to give chance to have a dry set between pool / beach / pool again. Boys didn't need we many pairs of shorts/t shirts as have mainly been in swimwear. I definitely didn't need to bring a pair of heels 🙄. Have washed a few times in villa but only because of ice cream mess!

w0rkschmurk · 10/08/2022 22:15

If we go anywhere for over a week, we each pack only a week's worth of clothing and wash it when required (sometimes hand-wash if necessary).

We take no more than one cabin-sized suitcase or rucksack each, plus a small day bag/handbag each.

For a warm and dry country, I'd take one pair of walking sandals (that can be dressed up) and some canvas trainers. Why would you need tonnes of footwear?

I feel so burdened by lots of luggage. It really stresses me out so I prefer to pack light!

mondaytosunday · 10/08/2022 22:16

Whoa!
We are one less, but for three (one adult two teens) for two weeks in the sun, we take one medium case and one carry on each.
I take one pair sandals and one espadrilles and if doing a lot of walking I'll wear my trainers on the plane.
Max two bathing suits each.
One or two kaftans, one dress, a couple tops and trousers for me. One toiletry bag. Two night shirts and a week of undies.
My son will take four or five tops and a couple shorts as his swim trunks can double as shorts. If he needed long trousers he'd wear them on the plane. He sleeps naked. One toiletry bag.
Daughter will take two or three dresses, a couple beach coverups and a couple shorts and tops. Two night jammies. One toiletry bag.
Clothes can be worn a few times, especially if only worn part of the day. Things can be hand washed if needed.
I'm too mean to pay easyJet for more luggage. However, I do buy while there and so try and leave room in our luggage for that .

middleofthelittle · 10/08/2022 22:18

Normal

We take a 23kg case per person. I could take less but I don't want too, I like having options.

Came back yesterday from a week abroad and didn't wear 40% of it though.

If it's free and within your luggage allowance, take it Smile
