Family of 4 - how many cases???

All adult sized here, 1 DH and 3 females (I think this makes a difference - just seen the accoutrements the teens need to take 😂).

We have 3 medium cases and one small hold-all. All fit to busting.

2 weeks in the sun. Quite a dressy place.

Also, DH takes a clean t-shirt for every day and night and 4 pairs of shoes/trainers plus 2 flip flops and 3 (yes, 3) types of shaver......

Usually 2 large suitcases (approx 20 kgs per case) between 5 (2 adults, 2 adult DSs and one teenage DD).

But we do tend to go to places with a washing machine, or do 10 days rather than 2 weeks. We certainly don't have a new outfit for each day. My DSs pack rather too light, IMO, and my DD wears pretty lightweight outfits!!

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 10/08/2022 22:27

I moved to the USA for 3 years with one suitcase and a carry on. I don't have enough summer clothes to fill a whole suitcase and I always end up wearing one or two outfits. But I'm possibly lower maintenance than some as I'm not a hair dryer or hair straightener girl...

Lacdepassy · 10/08/2022 22:37

We are heading off on Friday and I messed up the luggage purchase at booking so have 1 bag between 5 people.

I did have a quote to increase but it was prohibitive.

I've told the teenagers that they can have a 1/5th of the suitcase and they are aghast. There is a cabin bag per person but we are going with an airline which has the smallest bag allowance ever. Its something ridiculous small such as 40x25 cms.

So I'm packing super light this year:
2 shorts
4 vest tops
3 light dresses
1 hoodie 1 pair flip flops (both will be worn on the plane so not packed)
Underwear
1 bikini

It'll be fine 😬

We usually drive our van to a campsite in France so we used the take loads including board games, sports equipment etc!

Fupoffyagrasshole · 10/08/2022 22:45

I moved to London from abroad with hand luggage 😂😂

i backpacked in aisa for 6 months with 1 bag and nothing else

it’s absolutely ridiculous to take all that stuff with you

Gottoomuchgoingon · 10/08/2022 22:49

We're away now. 2 adults one DD we each had 25kg allowance plus 10kg hand luggage. Cases were rammed but we're away for 3 weeks so needed loads of toiletries we also packed 4 pool floaties and a pump
I can't pack light to save my life

Theredjellybean · 10/08/2022 22:49

Only ever have carry on luggage, so no queuing at airport or waiting for luggage.
We hate dressing up when on holiday so don't take "evening" clothes.
We all have one pair of shoes...
Really baffles me what people pack

FrangipaniBlue · 10/08/2022 22:59

This thread is the competitive "under packing" equivalent of MN competitive under eating 😂😂

Sunshineismyfriend · 10/08/2022 22:59

We take 2 cases for 3 of us. 2 adults a teen and a pre teen. We mainly wear swim stuff all day or shorts and t shirt but don’t have a fresh set every day. Also evening ojtfirs are usually work twice if a top or more if shorts / skirt. So half a suitcase each. We share a shampoo/ conditioner / shower gel / toothpaste etc too which saves space. I’d rather take less than struggle with cases. We still come back with clean stuff too.

Orangello · 11/08/2022 15:41

Hand luggage? Pff, what extravagance! I can do 3 months with just a pair of spare knickers in my pocket.

I don't wear the same pair of shorts and t-shirt every day for a week otherwise so why would I want to do that while on holiday?

dementedpixie · 11/08/2022 15:44

We take 4 for 4 people. 3 big and 1 medium.

MotherOfPuffling · 11/08/2022 15:48

For a week away for me I pack a cabin bag. Add DD (now 8) into the mix and a medium suitcase is needed as well, because of all the soft toys etc! Seeing what she’s getting like already with clothes and makeup (total opposite to me) I imagine a large suitcase will remain needed for all of her ‘essential’ items! Having said that, depending on where I am going, I also take an empty suitcase to pack what I buy while I’m away. Books, I go on holiday and always try to be near a specialist bookshop and I buy lots and lots of books. I’m not even joking!

PerfectRun · 11/08/2022 15:52

I'm probably not the person to ask. I'm just back from a week away and I only took a small under seat backpack.

I find on hot holidays especially, all the "nice" things you pack never get used and you don't bother dressing up or doing hair and make up in the heat.

It means you don't queue at the airport, don't have to wait at baggage reclaim and I was unpacked and laundry on within 5 mins of getting home!

procrastinationstations · 12/08/2022 05:16

Well, we're off.

Cases had room in them and we were over 20kgs under our allowance.

Honestly wish I'd packed more as I left behind a couple of things I now need to find when I'm there which is just hassle and expense.

I was so worried about over packing and I could have brought more. It makes me happy to dress up every night and because we have 2 rooms, the kids need their own essentials.

My family are all on prescribed medication so had to pack 2 lots of that in case, so I think that's the only thing I won't use.

I will report back though...

I feel very stressed having too much stuff on holiday. I take enough underwear and socks for each day, then one sporty outfit and one dress and that's it and just wash them if they start to smell. Oh and a toothbrush.
