Opening pitta breads

Is there a "right way"?

Ive established after extensive research and blind testing that Morrisons whole meal are the dogs bollocks in pitta, but I'm none the wiser about the best way to open them. Obv slice down the long side ... but which side? How do you which is the "top"?

Following with interest 😊

statetrooperstacey · 10/08/2022 18:59

There isnt a right side as far as I know, but I just use kitchen scissors and cut a strip off the top lengthways .

KnittingSister · 10/08/2022 18:59

No, I would say slice in half, across the width, not the length, so you have 2 halves. This way you can eat from the open end to the pointy bit. If you slice the length, that makes it more difficult to eat 😁

Whatever way I always burn myself on the steam.

LizzieMacQueen · 10/08/2022 19:00

I cut mine in half then toast them in the toaster. That seems to open them a bit further.

DinosApple · 10/08/2022 19:00

I toast, halve and fill.

Lazydaisydaydream · 10/08/2022 19:00

Cut in half and then toast. I wouldn’t fit them in the toaster without cutting them first!!

AndSoFinally · 10/08/2022 19:03

The kebab places always cut them longwise straight down the centre of the flat side (not round the edge) but I don't know if that's 'right'

liveforsummer · 10/08/2022 19:04

Toast them lightly first. Morrisons are definitely the easiest though. Sainsburys the worst - practically flat like pancakes. The war buttons soft pittas are ok but you sacrifice a bit of pitaishness in order for east opening without toasting

Crackercrazy · 10/08/2022 19:15

Ok, so I know this! Apparently you slice across the curved part then open the bread and place the piece you’ve cut off inside as a flat ‘base’.

Definitely! Just warming them slightly seems to open them up.

But you're very wrong, Morrisons wholemeal pittas or not the best. Morrisons garlic and coriander pittas knock spots off every other pitta in the world. Big claim. But true.

HMSSophia · 10/08/2022 19:59

Cutting a pitta in half down the middle is an abhorrence. I mean, what have things come to? That is utterly reprehensible. All pittas have to initially cut longwise. Law.

As to Morrisons garlic and whatnot, well I have obviously not carried out a comprehensive analysis and will Do Better.

Agree Sainbos are utter shite. Sad, as they taste good, but all other essential pitta qualities (ease of opening, capacity, longevity) are piss poor.

I’m a half it then toast it heathen. I will not repent, nor will I change my ways.

Well think on that you do! (As my dad would have said. 😂)

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/08/2022 20:13

I remember in the 80’s they came ready cut.

Mangogogogo · 10/08/2022 20:16

As a coeliac way I do is purchase gluten free pitta breads for £587 then I toast, cut in half and find they’re stuck completely together and throw the whole lot in the fucking bin. Hope that helps

ILoveShula · 10/08/2022 20:17

Middle eastern flatbreads are much nicer IMO, and I warm them then cut in half across the diameter, and fill the pockets.

BFree are the only acceptable GF pittas. And the only tolerable thing in the BFree range.

Arnaquer · 10/08/2022 20:24

I half and toast as well. Easier to fill smaller pouches .

You pay £587 for pitta bread! You must really like it! 🤔

MarshaMelrose · 10/08/2022 20:29

Oh, I re-read. It was a joke. Sorry @Mangogogogo . I should read .ore carefully!!

SwelegantParty · 10/08/2022 20:29

I pop them in the microwave, one at a time, then watch them like a hawk until they rise up, stop the instant they blow up fully.

WinterMusings · 10/08/2022 20:36

Hmmmm you all sound like you might be just the crew I need to answer another question!

I've previous started my own thread, but attracted a 'no idea' following!!

when I was young many years ago) my Mum used to buy 'Lebanese bread'. It was (from scratchy memory) round & like pita (in that you could fill it) BUT it wasn't pita, it had a distinctly different texture/flavour. I can still conjure up the smell! Unfortunately much googling has not helped😕& my mum (now in her 80's) doesn't even remember what I'm on about 🤨🤪

anyone???

liveforsummer · 10/08/2022 20:37

@WinterMusings it's kind of like a crisis between a pitta and a naan? I get similar in a local Turkish shop

MysticCT · 10/08/2022 20:42

Warburton's soft pittas are nice and very easy to slice, after they've been toasted.
