Found vape products in teens bedroom - help me navigate this

TeenVapeAngst · 08/08/2022 17:31

For disclosure - i didnt go looking, i respect their privacy but had been given permission to pop in to their room to gather laundry from floor (sigh) while they are away for a couple of days, and this is where i found the stuff. I don't usually do their laundry, but it's just one of those occasions where they have a tight turn around and hadn't got around to it.

My teen is almost 18 so I count myself lucky we've got this far and honestly feel this is a recent thing in their life.

They have a close friend who vapes and I am hoping this is more of a fitting in choice than anything but who knows?

Anyway, I'm honestly heartbroken over the vaping. Please don't bring me down for this - but I'm against this, for my own reasons and teen knows this and I thought respected this.

Also, if I'm thinking correctly then they've used money I've given them for lunches for this stuff and therefore skipped food in favour of vapes which just makes me worry even more. How much does this stuff cost? I've no idea?

I did ask the other night if they'd been vaping in their room and then seemed shocked that I'd asked but it was just a random moment when I just thought a) husky voice - odd, and b) vapey aroma in room. 🤨 they just brushed it off with a remark of being in company of friends who vape so of course theyd pick up thd smell on their clothes!

It's all piecing together now.

Until now we've had no issues of concern so have navigated the teen years fairly well. It's just now that I'm worried and I just don't know how to handle this.

They'll be back at college in the next couple of weeks.

Any advice?

So zero nicotine which is good

Is your child working?

TeenVapeAngst · 08/08/2022 21:28

No, but actively looking for work - still at college

If its zero nicotine then why does the leaflet ivd found say it contains nicotine? Is this a different product?

@GCBookseller thos is what I've found. I hate rummaging ......

No nicotine in that one - Elfbar are all the rage right now.

GCBookseller · 08/08/2022 21:35

0% means it’s got no nicotine in it, which is good. Those things are everywhere atm, it’s most likely to fit in with mates, and enjoying the flavour. Honestly, it’s much, much better than them having started smoking. You can let them know you don’t approve, but realistically, youngsters are going to experiment, I don’t think it’s anything to worry about 🤷‍♀️

HardRockOwl · 08/08/2022 21:35

Honestly - this is a little OTT and I'm so anti that his stuff it's untrue

My eldest is 24 and has her own home now but I found a vape on the side when I was visiting and said ' oh yeah? What's this then?' and told her I was disappointed and it was a mugs game. Couldn't care less that she's 24 Grin

My youngest is 15 and he told me he's had puffs on friends vapes but doesn't like it. I said to him that I was pleased he'd been able to tell me and that I understand having a go on it but that I would stop his not inconsiderable pocket money if I was to find out he was buying it.

With a nearly 18 year old? I'd say I'd seen it, I'd appreciate it not being done in the house and I'd moot the idea of perhaps too much pocket money was being handed out ..

I mean, what else can you do exactly? Nothing. So for the sake of continuing good relations, and the fact that it's not the worst thing you could have found, I'd let them know I knew and leave it at that

Everything does now. I buy coils for my e cig and they have a big sign saying contains nicotine. No idea why!

All ‘tobacco related products’ have to carry the warning that they contain nicotine - even those that do not contain nicotine … yes, it’s nonsensical - that’s lazy law-making. A bit like the products that say they ‘may contain nuts’ when in reality, they’ve never been anywhere near a nut 😀

Holidaydreamingagain · 08/08/2022 22:44

My Dp has started bloody vaping. I saw one of those bars in his house and looked at him and said “really? At 50?” What else can I do, I absolutely hate it but it’s not cigarettes so I guess it’s not so bad but I do worry what they’ll find long term about them

CrapBucket · 08/08/2022 22:54

DS is 17.5 and has left vapes lying around twice in the process of us moving house. Both times I've said nothing. First one I threw away, second one I put in a box he was meant to have tidied and still hasn't. I don't want a conversation about it. I'd rather stick to the message of 'study for your a levels' than anything else at the moment. So I'm turning a blind eye, glad it's not cigarettes or drugs.

ablisha · 08/08/2022 22:57

My sister started smoking at 15. There wasn't a lot my parents could do however they did stop giving her money as they weren't prepared to fund it if she continued

MissMaple82 · 08/08/2022 23:01

Fir fuck sake he's 18!

milkysmum · 08/08/2022 23:04

I had this a few weeks ago with my 13 year old. unfortunately many many young teens are vaping now.
At 18 i'm not really sure what conversation there is to be had though?

Thekormachameleon · 08/08/2022 23:07

Jesus, it's hardly crack. Calm down

rahjama · 08/08/2022 23:11

To all the posters saying you're overreacting because he's 18...or that it could be much worse:

that's not the question that was asked, was it? It's still not ideal, not good for your body, and a huge waste of money.

OP I agree with the pp who said just tell him that you've found it and ask for him not to do it in the house. And as he doesn't have a job, make it clear you will not be funding it (although I don't know how you'd actually police that). Maybe give him less money for lunch/other activities. Either way he is not using the money with the intention that you gave it to him.

You cant stop him, but you have every right to be upset, don't let anyone play it down or tell you that you're overreacting. I wouldn't like it either.

MissyCooperismyShero · 08/08/2022 23:19

Why is this so terrible? It's a zero nicotine vape, and of course it's a waste of money, but no more so than chocolate, designer trainers or iPhones. So quite honestly this not even really a vice. It's just a thing.

lastminutedotcom22 · 08/08/2022 23:31

My friend found a load of this stuff in her 15 year old daughters room she bagged it all up and put it in the garage and waited for her daughter to say something so she had to say something first

It took 3 weeks 😹

She admitted she was doing it to fit in

She didn't do it again

OnaBegonia · 08/08/2022 23:35

heartbroken at an 18 yr old
using a 0% vape?
You must very good teenagers of this is your first upset, I'll assume we not can home drunk yet.

OnaBegonia · 08/08/2022 23:35

*he not we

Yankydoodledandy · 09/08/2022 00:00

My DS too is doing this. I kept finding these coloured tube things. I think it's a trendy type fad that's going around with kids.

He's never smoked, hates it in fact, can see what its done to his Grandpa...lung cancer. Plus he plays a sport so is always careful about his body eyc.

You can buy them in petrol stations etv Ive noticed. They contain nicotine in them.

He's 17 and Ive told him Im disappointed that he's using these as Ive also noticed he's started to cough and is very phlemy .

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 09/08/2022 00:24

Good grief you’d think they were on crack cocaine!

They are nearly an adult, there’s not much you can do so maybe just accept it and ban any vaping in the house.

FWIW I find there’s a reason kids lie to their parents rather than be open - my fear of my mum being completely irrational over small things is what led me to lie. Maybe think about that for the future!

TeenVapeAngst · 09/08/2022 05:58

I just wanted some advice on how to navigate this/Start a conversation perhaps. To those who have offered that, thankyou.

To others, I didn't really need a character assassination. You've made me feel like cr@p. Thanks for that 😕

I'm switching back to my other user name now.

OP posts:
rocketfromthecrypt · 09/08/2022 06:30

There's no nicotine in it, so it won't be causing health damage or addiction. It's akin to going to a pub and drinking Diet Coke. Don't panic.

anotherbrewplease · 09/08/2022 06:42

If that's the most you have to worry about with a 17 year old - you're doing just great. No need to feel crap about yourself.

ChagSameachDoreen · 09/08/2022 06:51

It's vaping, not crack cocaine!
