Where to move to with a baby (England)?

Hi everyone,

I'm having to move urgently with my 3 month old baby. I'm a single mum.

I'm looking for somewhere that would be affordable and family friendly.
Would be ideal if its not extremely far from London too.

I have no idea where to look, any ideas?

Thank you

How far away from London are you thinking?

How far away from London are you thinking?

Maybe a couple of hours maximum

Some of the places in the north Midlands would suit your criteria and most are less than 2 hours by train.

Town? City? Village? Public transport to London or car? What did you like doing before the baby?

A city
I liked going out for coffee, shopping, things like that.
I used to live near the beach and really loved that
But the seaside cities I know are too expensive for me to afford

Go north, much cheaper than south. Lincolnshire is cheap.

Abcdefgh1234 · 08/08/2022 00:10

Cambridge. Its 50mins trains to london. Good school. Really good for children. My husband works in london. But we choose cambridge because of the school. Its expensive city though

PritiPatelsMaker · 08/08/2022 00:16

Go north, much cheaper than south. Well, until you hit the Cheshire Triangle Wink

Oinkypig · 08/08/2022 00:24

Evesham? Not a city but big enough and cheap ish trains to London or Birmingham

Oinkypig · 08/08/2022 00:27

Or Worcester? It is lovely as well. Neither have the hustle and bustle of London and not cheap as such for housing just not dear!

5zeds · 08/08/2022 00:41

Bristol. Lots of restaurants and cafes, shopping, schools, hospitals, theatre. Reading or Oxford?

HeddaGarbled · 08/08/2022 00:46

Nowhere near London is affordable, really. How affordable are we talking?

mjf981 · 08/08/2022 01:08

Whats your budget? Buying or renting? How many bedrooms?

Northbynorthbreast · 08/08/2022 01:27

Liverpool. By the sea. Great city. Just over two hours from london. Strong sense of community.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 08/08/2022 22:00

Salisbury

IStandWithMaya · 08/08/2022 22:16

What's your budget OP?

ThreeFeetTall · 08/08/2022 22:19

Do you know anyone around the country you might like to be near?

ColmanFlamingo · 08/08/2022 22:20

Bristol is good for young families and there is so much free or cheap stuff to do. Lovely cultural mix and lots of baby groups.

ServerSurfer · 08/08/2022 22:21

Grantham is 1 hour from London and cheap in the Midlands. Good for schools too

Heroicallyl0st · 08/08/2022 22:22

Norwich - 2 hours in the train to London, 30 mins by train to several beaches. One of the top cities for shopping in the U.K. Several baby/pram friendly cafes.

PritiPatelsMaker · 09/08/2022 13:08

Nottingham is 1 hour 38 on the train. It's not by the sea but there are lovely walks along the river.

EternalPoinsettia · 09/08/2022 13:15

I'd second Grantham, affordable housing in the midlands

Orangesare · 09/08/2022 13:30

East Yorkshire is a couple of hours by train (hill to London) and is a nice area but you really need a car
lincolnshire is also very nice.
could you have a brief visit to a couple of areas before deciding?

JockTamsonsBairns · 09/08/2022 13:51

It's probably too wide a question for anyone to be of much help. What is your definition of 'affordable'? That will vary enormously from person to person.
Also, how frequently do you want to be travelling into London? If daily, you probably won't want a 2hr train journey - but, once or twice a month, that would be perfectly possible.

Can you give any more information on what you are looking for, and what your budget is roughly?
