When Do You Cook A Roast?

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 07/08/2022 12:59

I’m on a ( strangely addictive) Facebook page called “ Rate My Roast” & lots of people have roasts in the week as well as Sundays. I quite like a mini midweek roast. For some reason have never done one on a Saturday. How about you guys?

Sometimes a chicken on a Monday if we’ve got leftover roasties in the freezer, as I don’t work on Mondays. It then does for a meal or 2 later in the week.

illiterato · 07/08/2022 13:11

Strictly weekends only. Usually Sunday and only in winter . I’m a traditionalist!

AllPlayedOut · 07/08/2022 13:12

About 4x a year including Christmas. I don't get the appeal of a roast dinner every Sunday. Also I hate gravy.

Typically a Sunday in our house (gammon today), although have been known to have a simple mid week roast when the notion takes.

ImposterAlert · 07/08/2022 13:16

Whenever I want one. Had one on Thursday.

NiqueNique · 07/08/2022 13:26

We’ll have one on any day of the week if we really, really fancy it, but we do usually prefer to have roasts on Sundays. It doesn’t feel like a Saturday meal to me, at all - in our house Friday and Saturday are for ‘exciting’, ‘treat’ or interesting meals. Mon-Thur are simpler, easier meals, for the most part. Sunday is for rest and comfort and roasts are perfect for that.

I’m doing one today! Roast beef with a mustard crust, had with mixed beetroot and radishes roasted with red onion, balsamic vinegar, garlic and thyme, plus French beans dressed with butter, garlic and lemon, and then roast potatoes, Yorkshires and gravy as well.

NiqueNique · 07/08/2022 13:27

We don’t have one every Sunday, mind. Especially not during the summer!

But autumn through spring it’s almost every week.

12roundsofwhitelowfatspread · 07/08/2022 13:28

Literally never. Nobody here is that fussed, so it’s better to put the effort into something they will like.

Narcheska · 07/08/2022 13:30

Whenever we fancy ones but usually a Monday or a Wednesday depending on the meal
plan and how meany meals feature leftover roast chicken

MsSquiz · 07/08/2022 13:32

If we do have one, it's more likely to be on a Sunday, for lunch.

We might have hot roast beef sandwiches & chips or roasties for tea during the week, but less likely to have a full roast dinner (unless Christmas Day falls on a weekday)

I think it's because both DH and I were brought up with a Sunday roast at lunch time so that's what we're used to

ReeseWitherfork · 07/08/2022 13:33

A roast on a Saturday?! Madness. Sundays in the winter + the odd one in the summer. Maybe once a month? I’m also not opposed to a Wednesday roast but haven’t had one for a long while.

This is Mumsnet so I assume at least 25 meals with the leftover?

petitdonkey · 07/08/2022 13:35

Would often roast meat midweek but it wouldn’t ever be ‘A Roast’ with all the trimmings. That is every Sunday roughly from September to June!

Festivalpartygirl · 07/08/2022 13:37

Mostly Sundays, sometimes mid week, but never in the summer.

pastabest · 07/08/2022 13:37

We have them pretty regularly during the week but not with all the trimmings. That's saved for special occasions or lazy sundays

I find them a pretty straightforward meal to make. Chuck salt, water a stock cube and whichever meat in to a roasting tray then into the oven.

Peel potatoes, chop, boil in salted water (in my case with a few Rosemary sprigs from the garden too) chuck in another roasting tin with butter and lard and into the oven.

15 mins before eating take the meat out of the oven to rest, whack the heat up to finish off the potatoes, pour off the juices into a pan and thicken with cornflour. Boil veg. Eat.

The roast potatoes are the only bit that take some effort and can be replaced with pre-prepared ones if you don't want to do that bit.

you then have leftovers for sandwiches or salads etc the next day too.

VandyCan · 07/08/2022 13:39

Sunday, but will sometimes do a midweek roast on a Wednesday in the cooler months

Oh no not 25! I can get at least 100 😶

PeanutButterOnToad · 07/08/2022 13:39

Roast chicken is an easy midweek meal. Sometimes I just cook the potatoes in the same tin, sometimes I make “proper” roasties. Usually just served with frozen peas. If I am doing a Sunday roast it tends to be beef or lamb which seem a bit more special (not to mention a lot more expensive).

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 07/08/2022 13:40

Whenever I feel like doing one but never more than once a fortnight or so.

NiqueNique · 07/08/2022 13:45

Yes we do sometimes roast a chicken in the week too. But I don’t consider it a proper roast unless it has the traditional trimmings (stuffing, roast potatoes, gravy etc) and more often than not if I’m doing it on a weekday I’ll do something like a peri peri chicken, or sesame, miso and maple, with rice or couscous as the accompaniment. So it’s not actually a roast as such.

I’m hungry now!

Me and DH both hate gravy, we love roast dinners though.

We have one most weeks although often not on a Sunday

weegiemum · 07/08/2022 13:50

Mainly Sunday, and not at lunchtime. Very occasionally in the week if I can be bothered. It's not difficult to make but all the inn-ing and out-ing of things in the oven is a pain.

Dh usually does it on a Sunday, that's why we don't have it in the week as he's ft.

AppleKatie · 07/08/2022 13:54

How can you hate Gravy?? 😱😱🤯

In lockdown I did a weekly Sunday roast it was lovely, but in normal times when there are things to do/places to go it tends to be once every few Sundays in the winter. I’ve not much interest in one today midsummer.

Geranium1984 · 07/08/2022 14:00

Any night. The chicken is actually relatively easy. Just stick a lemon and some herbs up its bum and stick it in the oven for 2 hrs, pour the juices over a couple of times.

I've given up on roast veg, they are the faff and the time killer. So I do orzo pasta salad, or green salad and garlic bread/roast potatoes as a side.

I mostly cook it so I can make leftover meals with it for a few days like chicken mushroom pie, risotto, curry, fajitas etc.

Taytocrisps · 07/08/2022 14:00

Only on Sundays or special occasions. I guess because it was tradition to have a roast of some description on Sundays when I was a child. I don't have one every week though. When DD is with her Dad, there's just me so it's a lot of effort for just one person. If it's a long weekend I might have one and then have leftovers on the Monday.
