When Do You Cook A Roast?

I’m on a ( strangely addictive) Facebook page called “ Rate My Roast” & lots of people have roasts in the week as well as Sundays. I quite like a mini midweek roast. For some reason have never done one on a Saturday. How about you guys?

Christmas, and occasionally Easter. Sometimes I’ll roast a chicken to have with dill potato salad, green salad, aioli, etc, but I don’t count that as a roast dinner, more a picnic. There are just so many other delicious things I’d rather be eating and clearing up than “multiple different items all roasted to make them identical then covered in gravy to ensure said identicalness”.

Oven cleaning puts me off frequent roasts. My oven always gets so splattered with fat when I cook a roast. Then when I turn it on to cook something else a day or two later I really dislike the smell of burning fat. Do people clean their ovens each time they roast?

Never 😬(OK, maybe once or twice a year??). Are you putting it on too hot??

Most Sundays and when my kids were little and fussy I'd do a mini roast on a Wednesday ( pork chops or a chicken) to get some veg down them

Full roadt at weekends. Will do a slow cooker roast chicken in the week but thats not the same.

MermaidSwimming · 07/08/2022 15:56

Most Sundays in winter, occasionally a midweek one if I'm not working. Never in summer

Cornishclio · 07/08/2022 16:01

Some Sundays in Winter but now just DH and I not every week.

Creameggs223 · 07/08/2022 16:08

Never on a Saturday because I think I'll save it and done it tomorrow but typically any day.

Holidaydreamingagain · 07/08/2022 16:10

Usually on a Friday but it’s literally the easiest thing in the world to make so often bung a chicken and a bag of new potatoes in the oven with lemon tarragon, olive oil and leave it there for 2 hours. Then roast some veg in another disposable tray and and one other veg and all there is to wash up is one pan.

I do one whenever I feel like it! Usually when I've found a short dated chicken in the supermarket so not often on a Sunday, shopping at the weekend is a massive pain in the backside! I've never understood why people will only have a roast on a Sunday, do you also have steak on Thursday and only like chips and egg on a Tuesday?

I work Monday - Friday and wouldn't have time to cook a roast when I get home at 7 p.m. I usually have something quick like pasta or a stir fry or leftovers from the weekend (on a Monday). I've more time for cooking at the weekend.

Whenever we fancy one, mid week or weekend. As long as you have the contents in, roasts are a really easy meal to make, the timing everything to be ready at the same time is the hardest bit.

How can you hate Gravy?? 😱😱🤯

In lockdown I did a weekly Sunday roast it was lovely, but in normal times when there are things to do/places to go it tends to be once every few Sundays in the winter. I’ve not much interest in one today midsummer.

Me and DH both think gravy is vile. Don't see the point of it. We want our food to taste of the food itself and not gravy and things that should be crisp, like roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding, to stay crisp not go soggy.

I have never found cooking a roast a faff. Even when I worked full time I would quite often cook a roast when I got home from work at 7.30pm

InFiveMins · 07/08/2022 17:10

I could never cook one during the week. Don't know why, but it just seems wrong to me to have a roast on a weekday.

Always cook a roast on a Sunday and we have one most Sundays. Love them.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 07/08/2022 17:37

Every Sunday without fail. roast chicken today.

We had roast beef last Sunday.

Sunday without a roast ? Unthinkable.

Nugg · 07/08/2022 17:43

Whenever I have enough people in my home that fancy one because I mostly live alone but I would never ever cook one in this heat! No matter who wanted it even Idris Elba there are carveries for people like that the absolute weirdos!

It says it's 40° in my garden right now and yes I am in England 😂

ToffeeNotCoffee · 07/08/2022 17:44

@mydogisthebest

Just as a by the way, can you make gravy ?

Roast Chicken gravy tastes like chicken.

Roast beef gravy tastes like beef.

Roast lamb gravy tastes like lamb.

Roast pork gravy tastes like pork.

For the avoidance of doubt, no we don't have all the above roast meats in one go.

I love gravy. Yes I make my own just like my Mum and Nanna used to. For some people their Dad's or Mum's or Gran's or Aunt's etc gravy is/was the best in the world.

Nugg · 07/08/2022 17:44

Having said that I now am a weirdo as descriptions of crispy roast potatoes and stuffing etc have left me feeling last night's lasagne ain't gonna cut it!

ToffeeNotCoffee · 07/08/2022 17:45

@Nugg

Yum yum !

About 4x a year including Christmas. I don't get the appeal of a roast dinner every Sunday. Also I hate gravy.

I found my tribe. I hate gravy too. Like a roast though.

I don't make gravy because I hate it. I haven't eaten it since I was about 12.

I have been vegetarian for over 30 years now so certainly would not be using meat tasting gravy if I did like gravy.

As I said, we like our food crisp not soggy and tasting of the food. We both hate wet sloppy food

mydogisthebest · 07/08/2022 17:49

I am cooking one today as I don't think it is that hot.

Hate carveries as their potatoes and yorkshires are not nice at all

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/08/2022 18:05

We're having a lazy one today - roast potatoes, veggie sausages, stuffing, yorkies (frozen ones) and some vege. Gravy too because I like meaty tasting gravy with my veggies. I think a roast would be horribly dry without gravy - unless there's cauliflower cheese or creamed leeks instead, maybe.

And now I want creamed leeks.
