Any preference of area at all?

Leeds is a fab city break as is Birmingham or Manchester- shopping, great restaurants, museums..

Brighton for beach…. York or Chester for history…

mdh2020 · 07/08/2022 09:26

Liverpool - ferry across the Mersey, good museums and the Beatles Tour.

City break in ENGLAND!

We went to Oxford at Easter. It was very nice. We did a day in Oxford and also a day in the Cotswolds as they're so close.

London is amazing to visit obviously.

Bath is also really good with lots to see.

I guess it depends on what you're looking for and where you're based/how far you want to travel.

felulageller · 07/08/2022 09:57

As a teen I liked Liverpool. But it depends on their interests. I liked going to Penny Lane/ Strawberry Fields but if they aren't a Beatles fan then that's boring.

For a teen who likes history/ Vikings York is good. Also, if they'll like the rail museum.

Brighton I found tatty and depressing.

I loved the architecture of Chester and there's the zoo.

Birmingham if they'd like the chocolate factory, canals and industrial history.

I enjoyed Poole for the Watersports and beaches.

It also depends if you'll have a car. Some cities are a nightmare for parking but some you need a car to get to the attractions on the outskirts.

The best non London UK city for tourists is Edinburgh though, esp this month with the festivals on. It's like nothing else in the world!

BIWI · 07/08/2022 09:58

If you're specifying a city break, what is it you're wanting to do? i.e. why a city rather than a village/town in the country? That would help us to be more specific with recommendations. (Not that there's anything wrong with any of the English cities recommended so far!)

And where are you travelling from/how will you be travelling?

notprincehamlet · 07/08/2022 10:07

Bristol - with trips to Bath and Cardiff
Birmingham - with a day in Stratford (and a tour of the RSC if you like theatre)
London - parks, galleries/museums, Camden, boat to Greenwich

City break in ENGLAND

When people say "England" usually they mean UK, or at the very least GB.

If you really do mean England only OP, then ignore suggestions for Swansea, Cardiff and Edinburgh.

LilyMarshall · 07/08/2022 10:13

Op, do you really mean anywhere in England? As that is a rather large space. Ones Ive enjoyed have been:

york
liverpool
manchester
leeds
bath
cheltenham
london
birmingham

Yes...i am.in the midlands.. so done Birmingham a lot but due to it been a few days England is probably easier than the uk..

Can drive or train but not sure when next train strikes are.

While it does depend what they want to see, DH and I managed several days in Liverpool with only v slight Beatles content, mainly laughing at crap statues.

There really is a lot to see there. Randomly we enjoyed the World Museum a lot with the extensive displayed of taxidermy animals or 'dead zoo' as DH put it. It was also nice going round their v big Ancient Egypt section in relative peace and quiet, compared to the hordes of people you have in the same bit of the British Museum.

Do they?

How odd to say one thing and mean another.

felulageller · 07/08/2022 16:11

I took 'England' to mean 'not too far away. The train only takes 4 hours from London to Glasgow making that much more accessible than places like the south west or parts of the north.

So I don't think suggestions of Cardiff and Edinburgh were unreasonable. It's not like anyone said Inverness!

No they absolutely do not.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/08/2022 17:05

It really depends what you/the teen enjoy.

London as an obvious, with so much to choose from

Liverpool for excellent museums and Crosby beach

Bristol for Banksy, Clifton bridge, the river with lots of restaurants

Brighton if the weather is going to be good - some of the town is tatty but the beach is great and the North lane area is quirky and fun

Leeds as a good base for getting out to small towns/walking - I like Leeds better in the evening than in the day time and don't think much to its museums

Chester for the excellent zoo and a compact town centre for a couple of days

Or see if there's a city with something on at the theatre that you fancy and then work from there

uncomfortablydumb53 · 07/08/2022 17:13

From Birmingham I would choose Bristol for ease of travel and options depending on interests

It's okay to just admit you didn't read the thread title.

LittleLlama · 07/08/2022 17:22

I would recommend Nottingham - not too expensive to stay (Premier Inn quite reasonable), lots to see/do (under city caves, court house, Nottingham Castle,, etc.) and good restaurants.

StorieAnna · 07/08/2022 17:25

Newcastle and Gateshead

A quayside hotel. Baltic and The Sage. Bike hire to cycle along the Tyne.
A castle.

Short metro ride to Whitley Bay, Cullercoats or Tynemouth. Tynemouth craft market - all day Saturday and Sunday.
A meal on the beach.
