‘Cool’ things you have done!

Today DP and I took our 4 kids up to London to the theatre.

After, we had a walk round a few sights and he flashed his warrant card and we were able to walk down and take a picture outside Number 10 Downing Street (not that I like anyone in there but still… quite cool)

We walked on a little further and went past the HoP, in my youth I was part of a film crew that went up ‘Big Ben’ and stayed up there for a few hours (also cool), and then, as I was the only woman on the crew, I got to wind the clock!

So as we were walking past today, I casually told the kids that I had wound that clock and I am probably one of very few people alive that have done so

and I was cool for about five minutes

What ‘cool’ things have you done?

I flew to New York on Concorde.

Ladyof2022 · 06/08/2022 03:05

From my late teens to my early 30s, whilst living in London, I rode a fairly large motorbike to and from work every day.

Now I'm mid-60s and disabled, when I tell people they are incredulous, but once they get over the shock they think this makes me pretty cool.

Ooh that is cool OP!

if anyone remembers Skins, I was a dancer on series 1 and 2. It’s less skilful than it sounds. Anytime there was a club or party scene, I’m probably there dancing away in hot pants, brightly coloured (ripped obvs) tights and a black vest top. I got paid about £40 for a 12 hour day on set 🤣🤣

My brother was in Skins too. I am not sure what scenes though.

I've spent the night in a log cabin on the summit, not sure if that's the word, of the Grand Canyon. We must've been less than 50ft from the edge. Was in 1964. Now you can't get anywhere near that close. When I got home, gave a full,100, slide show to my class at school. My first presentation at the age of 8!!

Probably not at all cool, but I was picked to carry the county standard at the diamond jubilee of the Guides at Westminster Abbey. Just one problem. It wasn't there, so ended up being a flag escort. Each Union flag and guide flag - the bearers can't see a thing, have an escort on the outside. The best bit was that the Sea Rangers captain's husband was editor of the local paper, and wrote a piece beforehand. He wrote a piece for after, too, which was published without correction, and was part fiction. Quite glad in a way, the standard was massive, tapered like a mediaeval prennant, and was very heavy. The same year, I carried a 6ft oak processional cross, topped with a hefty brass cross with central brass ball in front of 500 people at a divisional Guide service for the jubilee. Just to embarras me, everyone in Guide/Brownie/Ranger uniform. Me? Cassock, ruff, surplice and heels. Heaven knows how I made it up and down the chancel steps without falling flat on my face.

Minor thing, have sung, all robed up at a choir festival in Chester cathedral.

Well and truly 'outed' myself now.

LunaTheCat · 06/08/2022 05:01

Wow! Some seriously cool stuff!
Flying a fighter jet -that blows my head.
i haven’t done anything as exciting- I am 57 so I had better get going 🤨

Mortonpup · 06/08/2022 05:34

I love this thread! Not sure I've done anything vaguely cool in comparison- the tigers one made me shiver a bit!

PhoneyM · 06/08/2022 05:40

I was on a panel picking the people to carry the Olympic torch

shiningcuckoo · 06/08/2022 05:45

Sang at the Festival Hall and Covent Garden Opera House in my youth.
Been to Everest Base Camp.
Went to Live Aid
Attended the London poll tax protests.

shedheaven · 06/08/2022 06:01

I've had a Russell T Davis gay drama filmed at my house, met a geisha in Kyoto and been served tea, my job requires me to go into radio and TV studios on a regular basis. I've had triplets, spontaneously conceived.

Wallywobbles · 06/08/2022 06:14

When I was 18 I used to work in a bar that had a nightclub below it but via a different entrance. At the end of our shift we would walk around to the nightclub entrance, walk past the 200 people waiting. Say Hi to the bouncers and walk downstairs where our drinks would be lined up waiting for us. It was very very cool.

Goodskin46 · 06/08/2022 06:17

Completely outing but I don't care;
In my youth I snogged Chris Eubank and Jesse Woods (son of Ronnie).
Took 2 children (age 1 and 4) through Europe to the edge of the Sahara in a campervan.
Delivered a baby in the street once.

I've been on TV several times and sometimes do a guest spot on the local BBC radio station. My DC find that embarrassing but I travel for work and they won't be told that I'm not a spy. Apparently this complete fiction is cool.

Seriously cool! @Sapphirensteel.

I stayed a couple of nights with a local family in a village in the Amazon rain forest. You could only reach it by boat. I slept in a hammock. The house was made with materials from the forest.

I've done a long distance triathlon abroad. Took me 6 or 7 hours from beginning to end. 1.9km swim, very long bike ride and a half marathon.

I spent a week in East Germany when the Berlin Wall was still up. The food was awful but it was a fascinating trip.

We met Joe Sugg at an airport and chatted to him. We were in the same flight. DD is a big fan and was too shy to start up a convo. I did it for her.

Orchidflower1 · 06/08/2022 06:24

Wow @Goodskin46 was it one of your chn or a random pregnant lady?!

Vicliz24 · 06/08/2022 06:27

Cocolapew · 05/08/2022 22:43

Had an argument with Courtney Love backstage at a Nirvana concert.

Now that IS cool

Goodskin46 · 06/08/2022 06:28

Random pregnant lady

Simonjt · 06/08/2022 07:10

I have had two top ten singles written about me.

I used to play in the RFU championship.

PuttingDownRoots · 06/08/2022 07:28

I've led the Disneyland parade.

Completely unconnected... been photographed by tourists doing my job.

PuppyMonkey · 06/08/2022 07:44

Not half as cool as some of you lot, but I’ve done some things that my 15yo DD is quite impressed by while working as a regional journalist - interviewed some famous people etc and covered some relatively big stories.

Also been on lots of freebie press trips (where you have to write about the resort in exchange for a free stay in fabulous hotel etc etc) to places like Egypt, Sri Lanka and US. The one that impresses DD the most is staying in Hotel du Louvre in Paris where the room I was in had been occupied by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie the week before.

PuttingDownRoots · 06/08/2022 07:52

In something that might impress teenagers...DH has been on stage with various Tiktok stars this week. He has no idea who they are...

LibbyL92 · 06/08/2022 07:58

I’ve flown in a private jet with access all area passes for a major music festival with the artist and crew.

it was incredible seeing all behind the scenes both at airport and festival.

I won’t say who as it’s outing.

but wow! What an opportunity.

WheelofLife · 06/08/2022 07:59

I’m in my 50s. I ride a motorbike to work most days and play in a rock band :)

brianixon · 06/08/2022 08:12

When I was 22 or so, I was having to work longer hours than I wanted and not being supported by management.
So I chucked job, left next day and went as crew on a yacht. Boss tried to get me to stay on and finish something and I used the phrase.
" No. We are leaving on the evening tide" Which sounds corny as well as cool.

Onlyrainbows · 06/08/2022 08:19

I hosted a daily radio show for 2-3 years

I won the highest score for SATs (our version across the pond)

My DH used to hang out with Chris Martin, Gary Lightbody, and the guys from Doves. He was even featured in a John Peel session..

Solosunrise · 06/08/2022 08:24

"No. We are leaving on the evening tide"
That made me grin, @brianixon !
