‘Cool’ things you have done!

Today DP and I took our 4 kids up to London to the theatre.

After, we had a walk round a few sights and he flashed his warrant card and we were able to walk down and take a picture outside Number 10 Downing Street (not that I like anyone in there but still… quite cool)

We walked on a little further and went past the HoP, in my youth I was part of a film crew that went up ‘Big Ben’ and stayed up there for a few hours (also cool), and then, as I was the only woman on the crew, I got to wind the clock!

So as we were walking past today, I casually told the kids that I had wound that clock and I am probably one of very few people alive that have done so

and I was cool for about five minutes

What ‘cool’ things have you done?

I had a relationship with a famous person when I was younger. I was chatting with a friend the other day and this ex came up in conversation. Friend said that when my daughter is older and thinks I'm seriously uncool (as all teens do a out their parents) I'll be able to pull that revelation out of the bag and give her a shock. Made me chuckle.

MacKenzieMcHale · 05/08/2022 23:41

Published a book - they think that's quite cool

Host/guest on a podcast- excruciatingly embarrassing.

Sapphirensteel · 05/08/2022 23:44

Not really cool but doesn’t happen every day. Child in my class had stopped breathing and I resuscitated him successfully.

RishiRich · 05/08/2022 23:48

I've been on TV several times and sometimes do a guest spot on the local BBC radio station. My DC find that embarrassing but I travel for work and they won't be told that I'm not a spy. Apparently this complete fiction is cool.

I used to work for a company that did R&D into ballistic textiles. We had Home Office licence to have and use prohibited weapons. I've fired every weapon you can name. I would be on the firing range all afternoon firing uzis etc then go and pick my daughter up from primary school, chatting to other parents about the school fete. They never knew what I did for work. My DC are adults now and joke about when I worked as a hired assassin!

This is very cool

A older woman was running for the bus I was on when it was raining. I was stood by the back doors with DD as we were getting off at the next stop. Anyway, just as I turned my head to look out the doors I don't know how or why my reflexes kicked in so quickly, but I caught her with one hand as she fell face first. I literally caught her right before she hit the pavement and managed to lift her up WITH ONE HAND. I call it my superhero moment.😅 DD looked at me like I had a cape on and actually said, "Whoa!😯" Still gives me goosebumps thinking about it lol

walkersareback · 06/08/2022 00:00

Actually all of these are very cool - I sadly have nothing to add.

Bunnyfuller · 06/08/2022 00:01

I worked in military intelligence for 17 years.

Dobbyatemysocks · 06/08/2022 00:03

I don't know if this counts but I was looked after for a week by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton when I was about 3 years old.

My dad still has the Christmas and birthday cards they sent me and a picture of them both with me on the red trike they gave me for Christmas.

I'm also a distance relative of Henry VIII's chaplain Nicholas Ridley who was burned on a cross in Oxford by Henry's daughter.

maddy68 · 06/08/2022 00:05

.not sure I have ever done anything "cool". But I do party hard and leave the cool to others

Wherearemymarbles · 06/08/2022 00:06

A great many years ago when the USSR crumbled you could pay $ to fly in their combat aircraft.

I went in and flew (have a pilots licence) a Mig 25 foxbat at well over mach 2 and upto 78,000 ft.

best money i will ever spend.

Did stand up at Edinburgh festival.

Made a speech at Sydney Opera House.

Awarded an OBE.

(Last two unrelated to the first)

I used to break horses in. I never really liked the term, I was very gentle with them (I had to be, the horses were twice my size)!
I once had a quick chat with Prince Phillip at a horsey event when he was out alone in a big country park on his quad bike.
I overnighted as a guest of a big company on the Embankment. The big companies have posh private house style accommodation for VIPs in Central London, and you get to sit by a big fire on big leather arm chairs helping yourself to the wine. It felt very Mycroft Holmes.

Crazyperi · 06/08/2022 00:31

Had a piece of my work Influence a US presidential campaign.

Won an argument with a US shock jock who had his show cancelled that night.

Flown in a Black Hawk.

Pantsomime · 06/08/2022 00:38

successfully represented the country in sport. Am enjoying the serious coolness & snippets of so many interesting MNers on here

SingingSands · 06/08/2022 00:41

Spent a summer sailing around the west coast of Scotland as a 17 yr old teenager, with 5 mates (hello "Dignity" ear worm!). We had an amazing time and I still think it was a cool thing to do.

Have done a skydive, which my kids got to watch and they thought it was cool.

Used to be a nightclub dancer in my early twenties - just a bit of fun and easy cash on a Friday/Saturday night. Did a summer in Ibiza. You'd never think it if you saw me now, a mum of two teenagers in my forties and definitely not cool! (The teens don't know about the nightclub dancing, it's my secret. I sometimes use it at work in those "two truths one lie" cringey ice-breaker things).

LondonQueen · 06/08/2022 00:44

Climbed the 02 a couple of years back. Always a talking point.

RJnomore1 · 06/08/2022 00:48

I’m not sure any of this is “cool”

exvept @Cocolapew

i don’t think “cool” is cool any more either!

some really interesting things done though.

Wow 😲

TheWayoftheLeaf · 06/08/2022 01:29

Not particularly original. But I have, and do, get paid to travel the world.

Florence, Germany, Maldives, California, France, Hong Kong, cruises you name it!

I review hotels Smile

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 06/08/2022 02:13

Stopped a man from racially abusing two girls and two ladies on a bus in Birmingham, then fought off his bottle attack when I was 6 months pregnant.
I won.

NotSoSlimShady8 · 06/08/2022 02:25

I was brushed up against and inspected (sniffs, grunts, dribbles and all!) by 4 giant male tigers! - not cool per say, but mad that I am alive to tell the story I recon! would not recommend 😂👍

NotSoSlimShady8 · 06/08/2022 02:27

@TheWayoftheLeaf absolutely 100% jealous. I would LOVE that job. Can I ask how you got into it? Background qualifications needed?

Giggorata · 06/08/2022 02:35

I've ridden the Wall of Death.

CallmeMrsPricklepants · 06/08/2022 02:39

I successfully put a bedsheet on my Dad's midsleeper mattress at 42 weeks pregnant.

Does that count?
