Shit - I weigh 14 stone

walkersareback · 05/08/2022 10:39

I am 5 foot tall. I have always struggled with my weight and since Covid I've not even bothered to weigh myself. The last time I did weigh myself I was 12 stone seven. Today I decided to see what I weighed as I have had a couple of busy weeks. Shock is an understatement. !

I have been in denial about my weight – blaming it on menopause and other hormonal issues. I obviously need to get a grip for my health at the very least. Have any of you successfully lost around four stone and kept it off.

Could you please share how you did it and provide any advice/help. Thank you

I am desperate to loose at least 3st if not more, this week I went to see my Practice Nurse about the chronic pain in my lower back which has stopped me moving about and sleeping a full night for quite a while she weighed me and the scales jumped to 15st I am 5' 6".
Explaining the pain in my back stopped me from walking a few times a day she has arranged for me to attend the Slimming World programme for 12 weeks free of charge the class is just 10mins away from my house once a week and back up via internet I am so grateful to her, you can be reffered to the programme via your Drs surgery FOC.

Ok - had two cups of tea - not a breakfast girl - will be having baked potato, salad and beans for lunch. Am at my sister's and she is making lunch in return for me babysitting her children

Please remember, it has to be sustainable, so don’t go crazy, end up starving, then end up having “treats” which take you back over your planned calorie intake.

In terms of satiety, feeling well-fed and not getting hungry, some foods are much better than others, so maybe try having at least a couple of meals per week of things like lentils and chicken breast.

Theglowofcandles · 05/08/2022 13:00

I am the same height as you and I also went up to 14 stone during covid. I realised I was 14 stone in January 2021. I am now down at 10st 6.

The first thing I done was I weighed out portion sizes. That really helped me to see where I was over eating.
Next, I calorie counted for 1 month. That really helped me see that the extra biscuit, packet of Crisps, extra few chips, slice of toast was the difference between me losing weight that week or staying put/putting it on.
I then decided that the way forward for me was 3 meals a day at correct portion sizes and as healthy as possible.
I then started walking as much as possible. Walk to the school and back, go for walks and when collecting from childminder I walk the long way round. I then added on the gym and pilates 3 times a

For me, I have never been one to try out all different diets. What you do has to be sustainable. I would go with the method you feel you can sustain pretty much the rest of your life if you want to maintain your goal weight. My method is 3 meals a day at correct portion sizes and as healthy as possible with lots of walking, pilates and the gym because that works for me. You might find it is abit of trial and error to begin with.

Wishing you luck, I know it's not easy.

I got horribly overweight after going through menopause. I know I'd be terrible at sticking to a traditional diet/cutting out certain foods. I've found the 5:2 works for me, and fits around a soclable/irregular lifestyle. Have lost about 1 1/2 st since March (I came off it for about 4 weeks when I was on holiday and the weight stayed the same). The weight loss has made movement a lot easier, so exercise is the next step. 5:2 is tough in the first week or so but you adapt and stop feeling rubbish on fast days. Hope you find what suits you

RedRobyn2021 · 05/08/2022 13:31

When I had weight to loose a few years ago, I started walking every day (rain or shine) I ended up getting a Fitbit, which I loved and I did Slimming World. No other diet plan has ever worked for me, I think it's really family friendly. We also made some firm favourite dinners from the Pinch of Nom books.

I do think the suggestion about weight training is a good idea, I would actually love to do that.

Thank you for all your replies. It is very much appreciated.

I already seem to be falling off the bandwagon I've managed to sneak a bit of cheese and a couple of rice crackers before my lunch. I need to get my snacking under control.

It's probably because your giving yourself such a hard time.

This is why I like Slimming World because "nothing is off limits"

You should think about joining

MyHouseMyToughRules · 05/08/2022 13:40

Have a look at a website called “my body gallery” . You put your height and weight in and it shows photos of other people with your statistics. It’s really comforting to know I don’t look half as bad as I feel .

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 05/08/2022 13:40

You need to stick to an eating window.
Start off easy, 16:8 which is an 8 hour eating window or fast 500 (most people do 2 days a week 500 calories the rest normal).
It sounds like you are too used to snacking without really feeling hungry.
Also I find keeping alcohol/sweets/crisps/chocolate to weekends only helps.

I weighed 13st after giving birth and for 2 years didn't do anything about it. 3 months ago I weighed about 12st but got sick of feeling fat as I'm only 5'4 so started doing one meal a day.
It's slow going as surprisingly easy to eat your daily amount, I still eat takeaways but since I started I have lost half a stone and nearly down to 11st 6, you can do it. Smile

Tearsofthemushroom · 05/08/2022 14:04

Hope you don’t mind if I join. Weighed myself this morning and just shy of 12 stone. I was 8.5 five years ago but menopause hit me badly.
planning on a couple of weeks a Fast 800 before starting intermittent fasting.

For me it was portion size and snacking that was my downfall. And my willpower is utterly crappy. I'd start off well then reward myself by 4pm and then write off the day. Generally I eat very healthily and don't drink much so it really is slight changes in that regard but mainly eating less and moving more.

I lost 3kg just before my wedding in three weeks with a hypnosis book & audio, - I didn't want to lose any more due to the dress needing to stay fitted, then honeymoon after that so I'm not long back and going to restart it and build in running and yoga again too. What I really liked about it was that I had no cravings like I usually would have when I was being 'good', didn't feel like snacking at all, didn't feel hungry or empty, and felt genuinely full after eating about 60% of my normal portions. So I know if I continue that, and get back to exercising more like I used to, I'll gradually reduce.

I'd like to lose 15kg/2.3st but like everyone I want this to be a lifestyle change, not just some miserable slog that makes me thin for a year then I balloon up again. It's part of a holistic change to be healthy, toned, slim and more groomed overall. I got hair colour, henna eyebrows and mani/pedi for the wedding and even just that, throwing on a hoodie and a pair of jeans I was so much more presentable, and I liked it a lot. I'll keep up the hair and eyes and get my nails done every once in a while for a boost/reward for my hard work.

Chevyimpala67 · 05/08/2022 14:44

I hear you op ;(
I'm 5.5 and am now just over 13st. I look matronly :(
Never ever weighed this much.
Peri menopause hasn't helped as I'm 50 soon.
I joined ww on Monday. I'm on day 5 and it's OK so far.
You download the app, choose your plan and off you go.
I lost 20lbs years ago low carbing but it made me ill and for me it's not sustainable to cut out whole foodgroups but that experience has made using low fat spreads etc a bit odd for me but I'm getting there.
I've tried 4 of the recipes already from the app...all very nice.
I've just made ww raspberry and blueberry muffins and plan on having one for breakfast tomorrow 😋
I like how I could choose my zero foods (eggs, potato and wholewheat pasta for me)
It's really making me think about portion size too.
🤞

Chevyimpala67 · 05/08/2022 14:47

Oh..and you get extra "points" for things like activity, drinking water, eating vegetables etc
Activity is really something I need to work on plus toning up
I'll be interested to see what me weight is on Sunday!

Blackberrybunnet · 05/08/2022 15:14

I was 13 stone, did Scarsdale diet, lost 3 stone over 9 months. Kept it off for a couple of years by obsessively watching every single thing that went into my mouth. Gradually began to think about it less, and gradually put it all back on again plus two more stones for good luck. I am now working to get down again - at least to 12st - but I realise I can only do that by thinking about what I eat ALL THE BLOODY TIME! The minute I think I can just be "normal", my weight starts to go up. I am doing Slimming World now, and losing about 1lb a week - I'm in this for the long haul.

walkersareback · 06/08/2022 12:26

Had scrambled eggs on toast and an extra slice of baked toast for dinner - I really think I need to curb my white carb intake.

This morning I have had tea and popped lotus seeds.

Are you usually an all or nothing type or a one-step-at-a-time type of person?

Whenever I need to make a change I've always gone 'all in' - but the issue with that is that when the wheels fall off or start to wane you then enter a binge-purge cycle telling yourself 'tomorrow' you're getting started etc etc.

The thing to do is also try to reframe it in your mind as healthier living. I know that might sound trite but if you look at it in a holistic way as managing your health all round. I'd start with walking, jogging when you can, and as much as I'm still learning to stick with it, try yoga.

Deadringer · 06/08/2022 12:39

I am a couple of inches taller and also 14 stone, it's the heaviest I have ever been and i am sick of it. I will be following this thread with interest.

Rosehugger · 06/08/2022 12:50

I'm good at losing weight but not keeping it off. Generally though while my weight goes up and down it has gone down over time and I have never been within a stone of the 14 and a half stone I was in 2016.

What works to lose weight - counting calories and eating less of them, enough to lose weight steadily. Eating more veg, not too much highly processed food, drinking plenty of fluids, especially water. Cutting down on alcohol or none at all. Regular sustainable exercise that you enjoy. Making permanent lifestyle choices to keep it off - yeah obviously I haven't quite got that one yet, but I stay out of the obese zone at least, am active, fit, low resting HR, low BP, very good cholesterol, blood sugar regulation etc. So I do ok except for getting to and staying at normal BMI.

Intermittent fasting is very effective in peri menopause what I did.
Follow Michael Mosley.
Read Downsizing by Tom Watson.
Don’t eat til lunchtime.
Don’t eat after dinner. Then you don’t eat for 16 hours
Eat meals on smaller plates.
Cut out snacks and booze in the week.
Do cardio exercise most mornings online YouTube Apple fitness or get exercise bike.
Lost 2 stone doing this (12 st to 10 am 5 6) and kept it off. If in doubt don’t eat is my internal mantra. Think you need less food as you age sadly!

Okay how does this work for someone with insulin resistance, and who has to take two medications in the mornings, one before food, one with or after food? Thanks.

RudsyFarmer · 06/08/2022 13:00

If you cut out sugar and processed foods as a first step I bet a few stove would disappear without any effort.

RudsyFarmer · 06/08/2022 13:00

*stone

How about not having any bread at all on most days?

FreezyFreezy · 06/08/2022 13:21

I have lost a half stone by using caffeine as an appetite inhibitor and by using the extra boost it provides to exercise.

I'm also having some counselling which essentially says that I'm allowed to leave a meal if I'm full and that if I do get hungry later then I'm allowed to get a small snack, like a piece of cheese or something. I'm actually finding that I'm not getting that hungry later on though so its fine. (As children we were made to eat everything whether we were hungry or not and if we did leave any then we weren't allowed to snack later and it has properly skewed my attitude towards food).

I'm not cutting out huge food groups or making massive changes because I know I won't keep it up. Instead, I'm concentrating on portion sizes, on not eating out of boredom or a feeling that I have to, and on exercise.

MsTSwift · 06/08/2022 13:26

Redruby why ask me that ?🙄. I’m not a medic. That worked for me op did ask - you need to find what works for you.

PandoraP · 06/08/2022 13:32

I lost 2 stone on OMAD and still do it, though not all days. I also exercise a lot. I swim and go to the gym, but also walk and think walking is really great for weight loss if you build in some hill
walking too. OMAD really worked so well for me, but don’t think it’s for everyone.
