We go on holiday with my in laws and are in our mid 40s. MIL always insists on paying too! Our own kids are all 18+ and still come if they fancy it and we pay and always will.

Quail15 · 04/08/2022 18:37

I'm in my late 30s and currently on holiday with my parents, sister, nephew and my husband and children. We do a big family trip most years (mainly as we can all share childcare and get some time away from the kids 😁 ) we share costs. I think the only time I haven't been away with my parents was when I was at university and when I went traveling on my own.

isthatwhatyoureallywanted · 04/08/2022 18:43

Last time I went away with my parents I was 18.
Started going away with PILs when I was 38 and the kids were pre-schoolers. The decision may have been influenced by the fact that they pay for it!

Last time DD came away with us was when she was 16 (now 20). She's very independent and had secured a scholarship for sixth form away from home. After than uni 660 miles away and now a year abroad. She has lots of friends in the UK and abroad that she met in sixth form, uni and abroad, so naturally going to visit them for a holiday and vice versa as she moved around is natural. She's home briefly over the weekend but goes back a day before we go away.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/08/2022 18:46

We're doing a week on a boat on the broads with 23yo dd and her BF next month. If that goes well, hopefully we'll do some more, maybe sailing in the med. they've just had a week with his family.

Roselilly36 · 04/08/2022 18:47

They still are 21 & 19, but mainly because we pay!

SwedishEdith · 04/08/2022 18:48

Mine both stopped at 16. I'm sure they'd be interested if we were going somewhere Big but as we would probably only be able to afford a Big holiday without them, they'll be waiting a while. We all stopped going with our own parents at around the same age.

Festivalpartygirl · 04/08/2022 18:59

Depends where we go, DS 18 not interested in beach holiday or camping, with us anyway, but coming to New York and Amsterdam. DD 14 wants to go anywhere except camping, which has pleased me as I’m done with camping, they loved when little.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 05/08/2022 12:14

Seems like I might need to up my budget and make sure we go to interesting places and pay
This seems to be the consensus

16 and 17. If they want to come after 18 then they will have to pay for themselves

superram · 05/08/2022 12:22

I’m going away with my parents next week and I’m 44. They are paying. It’s a bit more complicated in that my mum isn’t well so I’m going to help my dad but I’m sure it will still be nice (I’m dreading it). Dh had no holiday so just me, the kids and the oldies….

Or you live your life and they theirs....I find this fetishisation of family holidays kind of odd anyway. The notion of sort of bribing my adult children to come on holidays with me or change what we do to suit them (oh and pay for the privelege!) I just don't understand. Is everyone not busy doing their own thing?

TheTeenageYears · 05/08/2022 12:56

All the time the DC are in full time education they'll be invited to join us and there will be some family discussion on where we go but ultimately it often becomes a financial decision made by me because I do all the research. When they are out of full time education we will ask if they want to holiday together of not, they will have to pay but will also get equal say in the details.

Bearsan · 05/08/2022 12:58

We have one holiday together every year, usually center parcs. One also goes with their other halves Dp's. We also go on lots of separate holidays.

Neolara · 05/08/2022 13:06

We continued to go on holiday with my parents to the country they were born in until I was in my 40s. My brothers and their families came too. We'd met up with all the extended family who still lived in the "motherland". Worked well.

BotterMon · 05/08/2022 13:10

We still did family skiing holidays when my parents were in their 70's and all kids, grandkids etc. went (parents paid)
Kids, OH's and grandkids now come away with us once or twice a year. Kids in their 30's. Usually week's skiing plus a week in the sun. But now we mostly pay! 🙂

Bumply · 05/08/2022 15:35

Eldest doesn't like holidays, so stopped coming with ds2 at 15 (stayed with his Dad)
DS2 last family holiday abroad with me was 16.

We've been on trips to visit family which involved flights and I paid for those when they were in their 20s, but not yet with jobs

SwedishEdith · 05/08/2022 15:37

How old are your kids, OP? You sound like you want them to still join you? I thought it was fairly standard that kids stopped holidaying with parents around 18 anyway. Enough threads on here about inter-generational holidays to make me think they're difficult anyway unless clear boundaries in place and who is paying what is all sorted beforehand.

MassiveSalad22 · 05/08/2022 15:38

We’ve just been on holiday with my parents and my kids 😄 I’m 32. We have in previous years too. They paid. We obviously offered to.

Tuters · 05/08/2022 15:39

This is the last year we are paying ( we go log haul), they are 26 and 21 plus partners.
Eldest DS's partner is arranging for us all to go away next year so they must enjoy our company.

MintyGreenDreams · 05/08/2022 15:39

I got cut off at 18 but I was happy to go with friends from that age as I was working

BigWoollyJumpers · 05/08/2022 15:44

DD1 25 still coming with us, this is the first year she paid for flights and her bar bill, which we appreciated. DD2 19 still at Uni, also came, they share a bedroom, she also paid for her bar bill, which was a lovely gesture.

dalisdrippingclock · 05/08/2022 15:52

If we are paying, my 21 year old is coming! She holidays independently too but I'm happy to pay for her to join the family holiday while she's still studying.

fussychica · 05/08/2022 15:52

My DS 29 and his partner sometimes join us on holiday, which is lovely. He stopped holidaying with us on a regular basis when we all returned to the UK from overseas and he went to university.

KevinTheAnt · 05/08/2022 15:54

Mine are 31 and 28 and have never stopped coming with us! Various partners have joined us along the way. We usually have a week in Greece and sometimes a winter holiday all together too.
