Whose fault is this disaster?

Icecreamclassic · 03/08/2022 09:42

Precious mug left dirty next to the sink to be washed as if by magic later.

Mug put into the dishwasher with all the other pots after dinner.

Mug is clearly not dishwasher proof.

So the fault of the person who left it or the person who put the "obviously" not DW proof much in the machine or the person who thought a non DW proof mug made a cute present ?

Mug was given to teen DS by his girlfriend, hence the magnitude and huge emotional fallout of the disaster

Nobody's fault - just an unfortunate occurrence.

Shit happens - DS will experience much worse in his life.

He can view this as a learning curve to safeguard his things in the future.

PS I'm dying to see how the mug turned out after a cycle in the dishwasher!!

StottyCakeandJam · 03/08/2022 09:50

Mug owner should have washed up the dirty mug after use if it was so precious. (I don’t know any teenagers who would check if items are dishwasher safe 😉).

WeAllHaveWings · 03/08/2022 09:50

A "sorry I didn't realise" from the person who put it in the dishwasher, followed by an "it's ok, I shouldn't have left it there when I knew it was so fragile" would be the ideal.

I don't think anyone is at fault, it comes under the umbrella of shit happens, no one died, get over it.

Best of luck trying to explain that to an emotional teen though!

yonce · 03/08/2022 09:50

Bit of both probably? Should probably have checked when loading the dishwasher, he probably could have cleaned it sooner.

I don't always wash everything the second it's dirty and can pop it by the sink to deal with later if I'm busy, but I'd be upset if my DH put any of my fancy cups in the dishwasher that clearly aren't dishwasher safe (like my EB mugs), if you're loading the dishwasher and making the decision to deal with the dirty dishes then it's probably worth checking / paying attention to what's being put in the dishwasher.

WeAllHaveWings · 03/08/2022 09:51

🤣 x-post with @DameMargaretofChalfont , ditto shit happens!

capedavenger · 03/08/2022 09:55

I agree, just one of life's little shit moments...move on.
Ds shouldn't be leaving if precious anything to be washed as if by magic so I think this one is mainly on him.
If you value something take care if it is today's message.

HeddaGarbled · 03/08/2022 09:58

Manufacturers for making such a silly mug? Girlfriend for buying it? Teenager for using it rather than putting it on a shelf and worshipping it?

TheVanguardSix · 03/08/2022 09:59

Oh it sounds like it’s time for a nice ‘mistakes are teachers’ talk with your stroppy teen. 😁
The thing is, if it were an heirloom handed down to him by his persecution fleeing ancestors, he wouldn’t even care! 😆
But it’s from the girlfriend…
So, this is like Chernobyl with all the trimmings. Good luck! You’re gonna need it. You’ve a looong day ahead, OP. 💐

girlmom21 · 03/08/2022 09:59

Teenagers fault. Don't leave your shit lying around and nobody else will try to clear it away.

Passmethecrisps · 03/08/2022 10:00

I learned this when watching someone unload the dishwasher and the special
mug I had bought myself took a header from the pile she was creating. It is reasonable to expect people to take care with all items really. But accidents happen and if it is going to be a disaster for it to be broken then keep it safe from harm.

CormoranStrike · 03/08/2022 10:00

Not everything has to be someone’s fault.

sometimes unfortunate things happen.

rainbowandglitter · 03/08/2022 10:01

It's the responsibility of the person filling the dishwasher here. All cups are left next to the sink. Some get hand washed at the end of the day and the rest get put in the dishwasher so it's up to the person filling the dishwasher to check.

No you wash your cup as you go. It saves work and mess for everyone.

superram · 03/08/2022 10:05

In my house kids know that everything goes in the dishwasher. If you don’t like it you wash it up or it goes to dishwasher induced heaven.

HappyHappyHermit · 03/08/2022 10:06

It's not a disaster they can buy another one on a trip somewhere together - how romantic etc etc(!) Accidents happen, no one's fault.

Alicetheowl · 03/08/2022 10:07

I don't have a dishwasher but I didn't realise there was such a thing as a non-dishwasher safe mug! Why would you manufacture one?

Hugasauras · 03/08/2022 10:10

This is what happened to my beloved Claude Greengrass from Heartbeat mug. Gutted.

ZealAndArdour · 03/08/2022 10:13

Similar issues in our house, my DP continues buying mugs which aren’t dishwasher safe, kicks off at me when they go in the dishwasher, but he’s never hand washed one of them himself. They just sit at the side of the sink making my house look untidy until I clean the kitchen and end up just washing them so I can get all the surfaces clear.

I would say in your scenario, if DS would have washed the mug himself then the fault is with the person who loaded into the dishwasher. But if he’d have let it linger hoping someone else would do it, then it’s his fault.

Wheresmymoneytree · 03/08/2022 10:17

I think if he drunk out of the mug it’s his fault. We had similar in our house where DP used a mug I was bought as a gift, I reminded him it wasn’t dishwasher safe and he “forgot” and put it in the dishwasher. That was his fault 100%. He replaced it and did it again but was luckily caught before the dishwasher was put on, he is no longer allowed to use it.

OMG!!! I've just snorted my coffee reading this!!!

Who knew such a thing ever existed!!!

Apologies but I've got tears streaming down my face at the thought of Claude Greengrass warranting his own merchandise 😂😂😂.

Popped on to say exactly the same thing. I don't have one either so wouldn't know

Well quite. It never occurred to me. The only things that can't go in the DW here are the crystal glasses that were a wedding present and therefore never get used

It's the fault of the lazy git who left his washing up for someone else to do.

A580Hojas · 03/08/2022 11:04

It's nobody's fault really. Just one of those things. He'll get over it.

NiqueNique · 03/08/2022 11:12

Ah bless him, I couldn’t actually be irritated with him for being upset. But of course he really should have washed it up himself and put it safely away.

I have lots of mugs/cups/dishes/tableware that aren’t/isn’t dishwasher safe, so DH and I wash lots of things by hand, but I guess not everyone would even think to check.
