50 plus years of age who are rocking it!

Hi all

I am increasingly finding myself feeling old. I am truly grateful and privileged to have reached over 50yrs but seem to be ruminating about how old I suddenly feel and where the time has gone!

I still work part time and I am about to embark on a PhD in the autumn. I have also just started running so it’s not as if I am stagnating as a contributory factor to feeling old!

I would love to hear other mumsnetters experiences of how they have

rocked life post 50 to hep cheer me up

I’m not there yet, but it’s creeping up. I can’t believe it. I was 37 last week.

In the last little while I’ve taken up French, guitar, art classes, running, yoga, strength training, outdoor swimming and meditation.

I’ve given up alcohol and embarked on a course of CBT to try and sort my head out once and for all.

I completed a Masters last year, and have made good friends of all age groups as a result.

Oh, and I cut my hair off and dyed it pink!

Keep learning, keep growing, and future-proof as much as possible. That’s my approach and a little bit of Botox and filler but don’t tell anyone.

ShirleyJackson · 02/08/2022 21:39

I wasn’t really 37 last week - it just feels that way

Marking my place

weegiemum · 02/08/2022 21:45

I'm 51.

Not rocking it in many ways, I've had a disability for 11 years and physically life is tough.

But I'm not letting it get me down, I've started cooking properly for the first time in years, I've just started chair yoga and am 12 weeks into a pg diploma in integrative counselling (good sitting down job!).

My dc are in the process of moving out (from September when ds moves out it'll be just dd2 at home) and it's great watching them move on with studies and life ..... I'm so proud of them all!)

Dh and I are exploring what this life without dc looks like - so far we've got as far as him taking a week off every 7 weeks rather than one day a week and spending more time at our second home in the outer Hebrides. We both feel we have writing we'd like to do and this is a great opportunity.

Life's good!

Hbh17 · 02/08/2022 21:47

Well, I am 57 and consider myself old but that's OK - it means you no longer have to care what anyone else thinks about you ! So liberating......

Watchthesunrise · 02/08/2022 21:52

Officially not rocking my age here. Good luck though.

Iheartmysmart · 02/08/2022 21:57

I’m a few weeks off being 55. In the last three years I’ve ended a 26 year relationship, bought myself a flat, got several tattoos, grown my hair and had it dyed pale pink and started a new job. DS is off to Uni soon so I’m picking up my camper van in a week or so and intend to go off exploring with my dog.

Summerhasbeenandgone · 02/08/2022 21:59

Just turned 51.
I am currently rocking growing pumpkins and tomatoes...
Sad but thrilling ime!!

TheOrigRights · 02/08/2022 22:01

51 and nothing is different in my life to how it was 20 years ago, except with my youngest being 13 I am getting a bit more time to myself.
Work full time, sort out kids and home, lots of exercise, same size.
I am financially more secure. I do have some caring responsibilities for some family members.

FAQs · 02/08/2022 22:02

My neighbours have bought a campervan and are always off on adventures, they are loving it, reduced their hours so they can go away every weekend.

Lacdepassy · 02/08/2022 22:02

I'm 50 in a few months. I think I'm rocking it! A bit on the chunky side but have joined a gym and started running again.. I have an interesting, cool job, a busy home life and a nice side earning job.

I've also started back a few hobbies as the children are getting a bit older so have some time to myself.

ShirleyJackson · 02/08/2022 22:07

It’s the first time in my life I can really do things for myself.

My parents have now sadly passed away, and my children have left home. That all happened very quickly, so it came as a shock. I’d gone from a full nest and quite high-needs parents to pretty much zero responsibilities.

It was either embrace it or sink.

MyBottomDecides · 02/08/2022 22:08

I'm very much not rocking it, but always feel I might... 54, and doing it completely wrong from the people taking advantage of DC getting older to semiretire/learn mandarin/start parcour. At my age, I have 6 and 11 year old DC and am in the thick of primary school pressure plus mum's taxi weekends and evenings, DH is still trying to get his business off the ground so the earning is down to me, and the next tier up of the family needs lots more support. I don't have time for cool hobbies and need to trade off sleep for yoga, so I'm knackered, fat and boring. Menopause middle means the clothes I've had for the last 30 years don't work anymore but I don't know what does. I would love to reclaim time, be more successful and find my groove as a 50+, so watching with interest

TitaniasAss · 02/08/2022 22:09

I'm 55 and I don't feel 'old'. I feel like I have a very different outlook to the one I had 20 years ago though. I care less what people think of me and perhaps I'm more inclined to do what I like!

ShirleyJackson · 02/08/2022 22:19

God, I forgot to mention HRT! Total life-changer.

BeyondMyWits · 02/08/2022 22:26

Knackered, fat, oldish (58) and menopausal so don't give a crap about rocking it.

Letsrunabath · 02/08/2022 22:47

I’m loving the fact Kids are at Uni and happy, husband semi retired and I’m retiring next year at 55.
we won’t have as much disposable income but we value time more than money and will have enough to be comfortable.
Exercise as often as I’ve always done but switched high impact to core strength and running to jogging, seen too many of my gym friends suffer trying to keep up with younger people in classes so I’m learning through their mistakes.

PaperMonster · 02/08/2022 22:53

52 here! Child about to start secondary. Left a toxic job last year and having a ball now doing odds and sods. Don’t feel old, plenty of energy. Probs peri. Looking to try different types of work in the next year!

CandyLeBonBon · 02/08/2022 23:01

I've just turned 53. Retrained as a photographer 10 years ago and got my first class honours degree at 51 and am now working as a full time photographer and videographer with international travel and a lovely partner after several years of awfulness. It's not perfect but I get to do something I love, every day.

giggly · 02/08/2022 23:03

I’m 55 and think I rock a little bit. Still got two teens in the house and work full time which is the killer during menopause in my opinion. Divorce a few years ago has left me mortgaged until I’m 67 so will be working I I then, Thankfully I like my job although is mentally exhausting.
In my head I’m about 35-40, love going to festivals and gigs and can take the dc.
Due to many extra pounds I dont look my age as they say, no wrinkles on a ballon 😂
Cannkt be doing with the young ones in their thirties saying they feel old, I mean your really not, just wait till mama hormones kick in.

Apollonia1 · 02/08/2022 23:36

Watching with interest too.
I've just turned 50, with 2.5 year old twins. Also work full-time, so life is 100 miles an hour all the time.

Planning on completing a professional certification this year. Looking forward to when the twins are a bit more independent. Looking forward to future holidays abroad.

maddy68 · 03/08/2022 00:19

I'm mid 50s. Go to house music events weekly , go to festivals very active social life big social circle with a huge variance of age groups my closest friends range from 27 -82

EBearhug · 03/08/2022 00:51

I turned 50 earlier this year. I'm having a summer of promiscuity, thanks to Tinder. I also do almost daily yoga, aquafit each week, swimming, art galleries, meet friends, going to Australia next month, learning languages. And I fit in a full-time job somehow. And my house smells of home-grown sweet peas, roses and lilies just now.

I've no idea if I'm rocking it, but I'm enjoying life just now.

EBearhug · 03/08/2022 00:52

And I'm also going to learn not to say "just now" every other sentence.
