Sinus sufferers, how do you manage/avoid getting the headaches?

Hi all
Just that really, just had another bad day where I was really knocked for hours with bad headache and nausea. Easing off now had some toast and can hopefully work tomorrow. I've been diligent about taking antihistamines to reduce mucus, what does anyone else recommend?
Tia!

I take fenugreek capsules which help flush out the sinuses.

Canwegodancing · 01/08/2022 23:25

Ok thanks! Didn't know about these!

Mometasone helps me quite a lot.

Is that prescription or herbal?

I take one cetirizine tablet per day ( anti histamine ) .

Onlyhereforthebatshitneighbours · 01/08/2022 23:30

Never heard of fenugreek but I'm going to have to try it.

I'm getting by atm by doubling my anti histamine dose and using a decongestant nasal spray when needed. If this approach stops working I'll need to see a gp but I'm managing with 3/4 days sinus pain a week atm, which I'm treating with ibuprofen.

Canwegodancing · 01/08/2022 23:34

Thanks all
Must get the spray too
It's just misery isn't it

Years ago a dr told me not to use antihistamines as they dry up the mucus, but it’s still there, blocks the sinuses, causes pain.
I get hay fever and very, very occasionally now sinusitis ( used to get it regularly when using antihistamines)
Steam. Lots and lots of steam.
Otrivine nasal spray or drops.
American remedy called tomato tea, sounds vile but tastes ok.
3/4 fill a mug with tomato juice. Add 1-2 teaspoons of lemon juice, 1 or 2 cloves of garlic, crushed and half to one teaspoon of Tabasco sauce. Heat, stir. Drink 2 mugs of this two hours apart. Works every time.

In Australia, we use garlic and horseradish for sinus problems. www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/75059/nature-s-own-garlic-vitamin-c-horseradish-triple-strength-for-immunity-200-tablets-exclusive-size?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyfD6gvSm-QIVMppmAh0oHAI3EAQYASABEgIR3fD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Please note that fenugreek can help if you are breastfeeding to keep your supply up and it is a mucilaginate which means it will fix all your constipation problems. I started by taking it in capsules but it’s much cheaper to buy it loose from an Asian shop and take it by the teaspoon.

Also, while I gave up gluten for other reasons, I found that it also solved my chronic winter sinusitis. I haven’t had a problem in thirty years. I’m Never going back to gluten.

I either take homoeopathic for it or see a hopi practitioner. I am intolerant to antihistamines as they make me really ill.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 02/08/2022 05:46

I have had so many sinus infections past few months and past few days horrendous as very humid weather. Had to walk today to the chemist in the pissing rain and could barely stand up to get sudofed spray and solpadeine soluble. Helped straight away. Sick of the neck pain, face pain, nasal drip, pressure on the face so bad and if bend down am soo dizzy. Going to make doc appt, and insist I get a ct scan as had trauma to my nose years ago and have deviated septum. But bad sinus runs in family also and had a first cousin who ended up really ill on life support as infection went through to his brain. Want get it sorted once and for all, seems to be getting worse and more frequent the older I get. Hope you are feeling ok. It really knocks you out.

thatsnotmynamec · 02/08/2022 05:57

I flush my nose out with a water spray which helps. Might try fenugreek tho.

Canwegodancing · 02/08/2022 06:00

Thank you all
Jeez it's rotten isn't it but its sort of comforting knowing I'm not alone in my misery 😏
Had a late night sat night and a few drinks which would be unusual for me and then yesterday was really muggy so I think combination just set it off
Going to clean up the diet alright again and boil the kettle to do the steam.
That's very interesting about the antihistamines...

Avoiding dairy also helps as it cause mucus, it is horrible pain the worst. Do you also get the neck pain? with the face pain/pressure.

turnaroundtouchtheground · 02/08/2022 06:05

i suffered for around 11 years with sinus pain and was taking mometasone but it didn’t seem to help. I had a nasal endoscopy and all was normal so it was excess mucous production and apparently tight facial muscles also not helping. I gave up cow’s milk back in January, switched to no sugar soya, and since then have had no sinus pain and actually no hayfever either. This was an accidental discovery but I am delighted!

alnawire · 02/08/2022 06:09

I don't use an unblocking nasal spray as while they can help I have had tests on and off of dependency because if you use them for more then a few days they start to have the opposite effect, which means you use it again and again to get relief.

I get Avamys steroid spray on prescription and use it daily.

MILLYmo0se · 02/08/2022 06:33

I try to identify whats triggered it, not a lot I can do if its pollen but I have a mild dairy intolerance and that def is an issue sinuswise. Hitting menopause has caused issues with histamine in general and for me that often equals sinus problems so I try to avoid alcohol particularly during high fever season and limit histamine containing/oroducing foods.
When the pain is really bad i find taking painkillers with a can of cold full fat Coke really helps, combination of the cold and caffeine I think.

Canwegodancing · 02/08/2022 07:53

Yes I am definitely going to go back to reducing/eliminating the dairy and will have to reduce sugar as well.
No neck pain but the pressure behind my right eye yest eve was desperate.
Did the head over steam this morn, pain has lifted but still feel nauseous so staying off work today. Has definitely gotten worse with the years and I have been looking at the whole histamine thing. Prob perimenopausal which is not helping anything. 😫

Steam, hot baths and neti pot. Also a weird one, someone years ago on a mn thread on sinus pain, recommended a (clean!) vibrator on the gentlest setting along your face following your sinuses in your cheeks etc and I'm a convert, really helps give relief.

MILLYmo0se · 02/08/2022 08:14

Oh actually Poyi you ve reminded me, i found one of those face roller things really good when I had Covid and the sinus/face ache was brutal, especially if i kept it in fridge for a while, and i was contemplating getting a vibrating version (not sure i could sit on the couch with a vibrator vibrating round my face 🤣🤣)

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 02/08/2022 16:21

Alnawire am on that also but when get sinus pain need to use the Sudofed spray and do try to limit it as yes it has that effect that if keep using it have keep using it. Unless someone suffers with sinus pain do not know how bad it is and humid weather not helping. Thunder storm cleared the air abit here last night and the lightning was amazing in the sky. So weird was watching Apocalypse Now and was thunder and lightning in the movie and in real life.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 02/08/2022 16:23

Poyi ha that made me laugh. My 22 year old son would be giving me weird looks and would think she really has lost it now if I sat on sofa with a mini vibrator on my face.. But sounds great idea.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 02/08/2022 16:24

Yes mine worse in peri meno also and more regular.
