What's an aeropress like?

Are they any good? We have a decent ish coffee machine but I'm trying (desperately!) To find something for my husband for his birthday and something coffee related might be good!

We've used an aeroporess for the last decade. Our proper coffee machine broke and we bought the aeropress for £25 and never looked back. It makes fantastic coffee and we also have a milk frother to make lovely lattees.

I even take it on hols whenever we go.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/08/2022 20:06

Brilliant. I love mine. I've had one for about 7 years. I'm actually on my second one, as the seal became too loose on the first one but the first one lasted about 5 years.

Makes brilliant coffee, no mechanical parts, and easy to clean. What's not to like?

holidayhonesty · 01/08/2022 20:07

Yup love ours!

I bought one for my DP a few years ago, he loves it. I'd love it and him more of he emptied and washed it every time he used it. It is easy to empty, into a pot for the compost bin and easy to wash but it annoys me.

Offandonagain · 01/08/2022 20:12

Nothing special if I’m honest… I’ve never owned a machine. Only an aeropress and a cafetiere. I don’t taste any difference between them. Plus the caftiere I can make more than one cu at a time.

I do like that with with aeropress you just pop to coffee grains out and wipe the bottom.

cheeseisthebest · 01/08/2022 20:13

Thank you, is it like a cafetiere or does it make more frothy coffee?

I genuinely don’t see or taste any difference. Except that the aeropress is easier to clean

titchy · 01/08/2022 20:15

Doesn't froth at all - that's not the point of it. It's simply a cafetière but works by pressure of water going through the coffee rather than the grounds percolating around the water which takes longer.

Wasywasydoodah · 01/08/2022 20:16

It makes better coffee than a cafetière because the grounds only have about 10seconds contact with the water. The pressure and heat together make it more espresso- like. So you can add that to frothy milk if you want for latte or add water and a dash of milk for americano.

Madeintowerhamlets · 01/08/2022 20:18

I love mine! So simple & portable & much better for the environment than a capsule machine. Also the coffee is far superior imo.

cheeseisthebest · 01/08/2022 20:26

Ok thank you. And what would I need to buy to go with it? Other than coffee!

funtimesahead100 · 01/08/2022 20:41

My OH loves his, had it for about 5 years. It makes a great cup of coffee, he also has a small metal coffee grinder for beans. He takes it camping, skiing etc. You can buy after market wooden stands to house it all in.

They should come with a pack of paper filters but these will need replacing. (I've tried a metal filter but found paper ones better.) Nothing else needed!

Augend23 · 01/08/2022 20:46

If you like frothy coffee then a hand held frother unless your machine has a separate steamer function.

My dad loves his because it's so portable - that, plus the frother and a little glass jug and he's all sorted for holidays.

cheeseisthebest · 01/08/2022 20:46

Thank you, and what sort of coffee?

OP posts:
pimlicoanna · 01/08/2022 20:48

Not a fan at all. I used it once or twice and gave it to someone else,

Augend23 · 01/08/2022 20:51

Just normal ground coffee is fine.

scoobycute · 01/08/2022 20:55

It makes decent coffee and as other posters have said it's portable so my husband loves taking his hiking/camping!

Buy good coffee for it from a nice coffee shop

And here's another gift idea to go along with it....

https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/528554452/aeropress-holder-organiser-caddy?gaorder=mosttrelevant&gasearchhtype=all&gaviewwtype=gallery&gasearchhquery=aeropress+organizer&ref=sc_gallery-1-1&frs=1&plkey=f7e31bdb63d2b2fbc5754f50504b9fbafbb32dc4%3A528554452

Which is excellent because I couldn't deal with all the parts just sitting about/around the kettle cluttering the work too and my husband loved it!!

pastaandpesto · 01/08/2022 20:56

DH loves his. He's ditched his coffee machine. He's got the travel version.

He gets on fine with the metal filters so it is zero waste (apart from the grinds). Easy to travel with.

Some mail order coffee suppliers offer a grind specifically for aeropress.

And you could get him a coffee grinder for Christmas!

Damnloginpopup · 02/08/2022 02:27

I thought it was crap. Used it half a dozen times and couldn't get a single coffee I enjoyed so I returned it.

changzi · 02/08/2022 03:38

What's the travel version? It's already pretty low maintenance and small!

We like the aeropress, it makes a good coffee. We use any espresso ground coffee (ie finely ground). However, these would be my cons:

  • Can only make one cup at a time (I usually like a couple in the morning).
  • Uses more ground coffee per cup than other devices.
  • You need to keep buying the paper filters if you choose not to use the metal one. Thankfully the pack of papers has hundreds in it.
Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 02/08/2022 04:10

I went back to French press, seemed easier for same coffee.

SallyLovesCheese · 02/08/2022 05:15

I love mine! Had it around 10 years. I'm also still on the original pack of filter papers, as I rinse and reuse them!

I love the ease of the coffee puck - I collect them in a tin and put them on my garden. My BIL is a fan of the upside down method, but I'm a right-way- up gal!

I have a milk frother/warmer too. I used to grind beans but just use ground atm.

Divebar2021 · 02/08/2022 05:48

I use the inverted method because I like a stronger coffee. ( have a look on You Tube). I actually prefer the coffee from my Moka pot to the Aeropress but they are good… we’ve had ours years and years and use a metal filter. We take ours on holiday having visited too many holiday cottages to find no cafetière on arrival.

Divebar2021 · 02/08/2022 05:49

PS. You need the right grind on that coffee.
