Im having some very dear friends over for the first time at my place. I was thinking to invite them in the afternoon.
I was thinking cakes, savoury pastries, fresh fruit is there anything you particularly like to nibble on.

I was going to say No nasty cold egg sandwiches. But several pps have asked for them. I'm not sure how anyone copes with the smell 🤢

Cheese straws (homemade and Gf!)

Hot baguettes with cheese, pate and veg sticks and dip.

Lots of small creamy cakes like the mini frozen selection you get from Iceland - I don't need posh - just tasty Grin

I'm vegetarian but hate hate hate egg sandwiches. So please would you do some cream cheese and cucumber with celery salt. Thank you. I'd like a tiny glass jar of lemon posset with a shortbread, Ottolenghi's almond clementine cake and a scone with raspberry jam (Bonne Maman intense if you don't mind). Am on my way...

Plenty of coffee and walnut cakes where I live. I did this one my birthday. Tiny sandwiches.home made scones, still warm, carrot cake.... everything home made, including the jam and chutney.Proper China stands, cups and saucers, tea, coffee, and prosecco

If you are baking- coffee and walnut cake.
You hardly ever see it in the shops (probably because nuts are expensive) but it's my favourite.

Generally afternoon tea means a cup of tea and a piece of cake or biscuits. It doesn't mean lunch.

@Boating123 That's so weird as I have never heard of Afternoon tea that's anything other than a lunch/late lunch thing with sandwiches, cakes and tea/drinks. Where are you that afternoon tea is just tea and cake? (Only asking as interested in things in general that are different in different parts of the country 🙂)

Tesco butter basted Turkey on white bread cut into triangles/ready salted crisps in a bowl
Grapes/cheese cocktail sticks, sausages on sticks, feta/cherry toms on sticks
cream tea - scone with jam/clotted creamsticks
or orange/lemon fondant fancies
mug of tea
Do not need fancy schmancy china or trays Wink

SequinsandStilettos · 01/08/2022 15:56

Tesco also have a lovely cheese fondue thing with tiger bread, if you are not doing hotel high tea type scenario

TheHorrorOfIt · 01/08/2022 15:57

Battenberg and champagne for me please!

takeitandleaveit · 01/08/2022 16:00

Whatever you serve OP, it needs to be on a really nice china cake stand. Preferably several cake stands. 😂

I made cheese scones and topped them with avocado and crumbled feta cheese - they were very tasty for an extra savoury idea.

That sounds lovely @EdnaMole , I'm definitely pinching this idea

BigFatLiar · 01/08/2022 16:20

Scones with clotted cream and jam
Small cakes (cup cakes, fairy cakes, eclairs, millionaire shortbread, shortbread etc)
Finger sandwiches or small rolls cut in two
Filling
Coronation chicken
Roast beef with horseradish
Salmon
Prawn mayo
(Mostly anything nice really)
Little sausages, pieces of pork pie, little slices of sausage roll, pieces of quiche
Selection of cheeses and grapes
Crackers

Anything really.

OH loves baking so we sometimes have afternoon tea just so he can indulge in baking. It's not so dainty, couple of cakes, scones, sausage rolls pastries and a big pot of tea with leaf tea. (I make better scones than him though)

WireSkills · 01/08/2022 16:35

All. The. Scones!

(Fruit ones preferably, please!)

Sandwich wise - Coronation chicken (without the sultanas please - add them to the scones instead!), cheese and pickle and roast beef and horseradish for me please!

WireSkills · 01/08/2022 16:36

Ooh.. and brie and cranberry sandwiches... 😋

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 01/08/2022 16:40

Also, many more finger sandwiches to cakes. I LOVE them!!!💜

OldTinHat · 01/08/2022 16:51

Just want to say thank you! I was going to ask the same question and you beat me to it it. Some great ideas.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 01/08/2022 18:39

I'm shocked with the crisps suggestions. I'm a huge crisp fan but they have no place on an afternoon tea!

EspeciallyDeIighted · 01/08/2022 18:45

I'd far rather have crisps than cake.

Boating123 · 01/08/2022 19:52

I grew up in Somerset but my mum was from the Midlands. Morning coffee (i.e drink and a nice thing) and afternoon tea (I.e drink and a nice thing) is something I've always done. If someone said don't have lunch but at 3:00 or 4:00 you can have lunch and followed by cakes/biscuits I wouldn't be happy. I would be starving by 3:00/4:00 and would be rubbish company.

I guess if someone said let's have afternoon tea at the Ritz or something (I've never been there) I would expect a tiered stand with sandwiches and a selection of cakes.
