Afternoon tea at my place- what would you like to eat?

TheGingerNinjaa · 01/08/2022 11:39

Im having some very dear friends over for the first time at my place. I was thinking to invite them in the afternoon.
I was thinking cakes, savoury pastries, fresh fruit is there anything you particularly like to nibble on.

Love an egg and cress sandwich with proper pepper please. What time was it that I was supposed to come round??

NuffSaidSam · 01/08/2022 11:43

I'd love a (gluten free) scone with cream and jam. Cup of English Breakfast tea.

Around 4pm?

DisforDarkChocolate · 01/08/2022 11:47

Very fresh small plain and fruit scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam.

Mini cheese scones.

Finger sandwiches.

Can I come, please? I'd bring the cheese scones.

TwigTheWonderKid · 01/08/2022 11:50

Some dainty finger sandwiches, maybe egg and cress and smoked salmon and cream cheese? Scones, clotted cream and jam and then a selection of small cakes or fruit filled pastry tarts.

Boating123 · 01/08/2022 11:53

If you are baking- coffee and walnut cake.
You hardly ever see it in the shops (probably because nuts are expensive) but it's my favourite.

Generally afternoon tea means a cup of tea and a piece of cake or biscuits. It doesn't mean lunch.

Paprikapommes · 01/08/2022 12:00

Small rolls or baguette slice sandwiches over dry and miniscule finger ones.

A better balance of savoury to sweet. I never understand why it's a third of a sandwich and 6 desserts. Could be a quiche or a puff pastry tart, or a nice fresh salad, olives, crudités etc.

A lighter sweet to balance out the cake/scones: mousse, something creamy, macaron...

AdaColeman · 01/08/2022 12:00

Smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches.
Thinly cut rare roast beef and horseradish sandwiches.
Selection of cakes eg Opera slice, tarte au citron, Victoria sandwich cake.
Small trifle or Eton Mess.
Glasses of fizz, elderflower pressé for those not drinking alcohol.

popandchoc · 01/08/2022 12:34

Egg and ham and mustard sandwiches, mini quiches and scones .

uncomfortablydumb53 · 01/08/2022 13:13

My absolute favourite would be
Plain scones with Jam and a little clotted cream
Carrot cake
Roast beef and horseradish granary sandwiches or mini rolls
I'm sure you're friends will appreciate whatever you choose and enjoy your company
You're a very thoughtful friend

Itsthelookitsthelook · 01/08/2022 13:18

Proper tea from a pot
Fresh sandwiches with a variety of simple fillings but must include an egg mayo. Ham ideally and then a third option.
Plain scones, not fruit with clotted cream and good jam.
A nice sponge cake, must be light and moist.
A selection of other desserts with a good mix if types.

Afonavon · 01/08/2022 13:26

Savoury pastries

Scone with clotted cream & jam

Carrot cake

Really tasty sandwiches on top quality bread

Mini Eaton mess

China tea pot with Nanna style teacups and saucers

Canoli are lovely too, but quite expensive

Fizz is essential imo

Enjoy, it sounds like you are going to have a lovely time

Dalekjastninerels · 01/08/2022 14:03

Tea(the drink) with sandwiches; cucumber, smoked salmon. ham and cheese.

All with white bread

Cupcakes.

BrewCake

PurpleDaisies · 01/08/2022 14:05

It has to have scones, cream and jam. Egg and cress finger sandwiches too. Anything else is a bonus!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 01/08/2022 14:07

I often do afternoon tea for a special occasion-

Salmon and cream cheese/ ham/egg mayonnaise finger sandwiches

Crisps

Scones with cream and jam

Cakes - fruit and cup cakes

Bowl of strawberries

Grapes

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 01/08/2022 14:15

Scones with jam and clotted cream.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 01/08/2022 14:18

Small sandwiches - not cucumber! Smoked salmon & cream cheese/roast beef & mustard/egg & cress etc.

Scones - small scones, please! And raspberry jam, not strawberry.

Petit Fours/French Fancies - teeny, tiny cakes - no more than two mouthfuls, otherwise I will feel unpleasantly full.

To drink - you know your friends, but I hate tea. I would LOVE for you to serve lemonade as well as tea. The old fashioned non-fizzy type, not Schweppes or Sprite.

I’m hungry now and I could murder a scone!

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 01/08/2022 14:23

Egg and cress sandwiches, well seasoned please with the crusts on.
Cucumber sandwiches as above.

Fruit scones and clotted cream. I don’t like jam

Lemon drizzle cake, Cadbury chocolate fingers.

Jug of Pimms.

Thank you

EspeciallyDeIighted · 01/08/2022 14:25

Finger sandwiches as suggested above, eg egg mayo and cress, roast beef and horseradish, smoked salmon and cream cheese.

Mini quiches or sausage rolls or similar served warm

Posh ready salted crisps

Scones with clotted cream and raspberry jam OR small homemade fairy cake or similar, I wouldn't eat both.

Strawberries, grapes or similar

Assam tea, iced water with a slice of lemon.

I don't think so.

Afternoon tea is traditionally various sandwiches- no crusts- with pastries and scones, jam and cream with tea and possibly champagne.

Myotherusernameisaferrari · 01/08/2022 14:26

Good sandwiches - smoked salmon and cream cheese, ham and grain mustard, cheese and pickle, egg mayo.

Additional savoury items - tiny goats cheese and caramelised onion tart, cheese straw, confit duck and spring onion pithivier (had it once and it was to die for).

Scone - MUST be clotted cream, no putting out whipped cream and thinking we won't notice. I love black cherry jam

Desserts - a mousse, a cake, a traybake, something with fruit, something chocolatey

Lashings of tea.

And for a sheer joy, a portion of really nice chips on the side cause everyone will say "that was a cracking good idea!"

Theoldwoman · 01/08/2022 14:27

Club sandwiches 🥪

cherrypiepie · 01/08/2022 14:32

I love hosting afternoon tea!

I make finger sandwiches following Mary berry's recipe to keep them moist. Basically make them the day before and then cover in well wrung out kitchen paper and cling film. I make smoked salmon and lemon cream Philadelphia, cheese and chutney, ham and grain mustard and egg mayo with cress. I use a good spread of real butter.

I'm well known for my sandwiches at our work buffets.

Served with mini cup cakes and scones with cream and jam.

TheGingerNinjaa · 01/08/2022 15:11

Wow! Thank you so much. So many lovely ideas. Im really looking forward to it. They are work colleagues and its the first time we will get to socialise out of work.

Lots of fresh flowers in jam jars too!

I made cheese scones and topped them with avocado and crumbled feta cheese - they were very tasty for an extra savoury idea.
