"Whether someone pronounces the ā€œgā€ in ā€œfingerā€ and ā€œsingerā€ is another key dialect marker, with a silent ā€œgā€ in singer now the most common form.In the 1950s, speakers who articulated the ā€œgā€ in both words were mainly in the north-west of England and the West Midlands, but the new survey found that this pronunciation is spreading beyond its traditional limits, into Herefordshire, Preston, the Ribble valley and Nottinghamshire"

I think I pronounce it 'fin / ger' and 'sin / er'

I don't think the 'g' is silent when I pronounce it.

Unless I am missing something - is there a form of a silent 'g' in these words?

Do you genuinely not hear the difference between fing-ger and sing-er?

They probably genuinely don't hear the difference because they are genuinely the same in their accent!

Have you really not come across different English accents @RenegadeMatron ?

One starts with an S and one with an F; otherwise they are the same word in my accent. Seriously, in the Black Country we do not have the ng digraph. I didn’t realise this until I went to University and met people who didn’t speak like me for the first time. They thought the way I said any word ending in ā€˜inf’ hilarious šŸ™„

I pronounce them both the same with the G in the middle but I’m from one of the places in the OP. I didn’t know there was another way

Well, clearly they don’t hear the difference in their own accent, given they’re saying them exactly the same! Grin

The difference in how they’re said in accents who pronounce them differently has been explained multiple times.

Surely you should be posing your question about coming across different accents to the people who can’t hear the difference?
