Is there a method to a clean house?

Zie · 31/07/2022 03:57

For example cleaning that needs to be weekly, change bedding, hoover, mop, dust, clean bathrooms.

Then monthly such as oven clean, skirtings etc? Or is that quarterly haha!

I feel as if there is so much to do. Honestly I've not done the skirtings, properly with soap and water in about a year!

Don't even get me started on jobs like, behind the sofa clean, kitchen cupboards.

Maybe Mrs Hinch has a method in her book? I just need some sort of way to keep on top of it, instead of leaving the bigger jobs and then having to do an epic clean every 6 months or so.

Have a look at The Organised Mum Method. There are free che lists on their website.

I also recommend the organised mum method, house looks a lot tidier since I started following it.

Definitely TOMM (the organised mum method) get the app, it's worth it!

BertieBotts · 31/07/2022 05:00

I am the opposite of organised, I like the a slob comes clean method. She says it's advice for people who hate organising 😂 example of reality check from her book.

The Organised Mum Method is brilliant and the app is definitely worth paying for. There is a whole community to support and encourage you on Facebook/Instagram

SalviaOfficinalis · 31/07/2022 06:58

Yes I agree, TOMM is really useful. I have the app and it gives you access to half hour playlists to motivate you while you clean.

I also like the guided clean 30 min playlists - she tells you what to do basically. I don’t use them every time but it’s good to focus your mind.

BertieBotts · 31/07/2022 06:59

I like the app Tody as well. It gives you rooms to set up and you choose which tasks you want to add to them. You then set the frequency and what state it's in when starting setup. It will then give you a list of what needs doing each day.

I tend to do my ASCC daily tasks and if I have any energy/time/motivation left then I look at Tody and see what needs doing from there. It has a useful pacing feature (a game to "beat Dusty") so you can tell if you're behind or on track for the month.

LifeBeginsNow · 31/07/2022 07:10

The app mentions a shared login so that tasks can be divided, presumably the other person needs to download the app and pay £4.99 - is that correct?

I tend to use my notes on the phone to remind me to do jobs so I'm trying to work out if the app will add anything to my life.

Ylvamoon · 31/07/2022 07:15

Life is to short to worry about cleaning!

BertieBotts · 31/07/2022 12:03

For Tody, you can either log in under the same Google account and use the shared tasks feature or if you want to use on separate Google accounts, you each need to pay the 4.99 per year. I just use the free version. I did pay for the first year but the free features are enough for me. I think on Apple you can all get it under Apple family or something.

Sorry I don't know about the other app.

PeloAddict · 31/07/2022 12:04

I've slipped recently but try to do 30 mins every weekday and nothing on a weekend
I take the 30 mins and do whatever needs doing and then stop

Hempy · 31/07/2022 12:06

I've used organised mum for a while and it seems to work for me. Fridays are a busy day for me but I make time for the Friday focus where you do deep cleaning.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 31/07/2022 12:10

I like the Organised Mum ethos, FlyLady is good but you get millions of emails (there are threads in here that help summarise it), and A slob comes clean as mentioned is good. As pp said however, YOU have to clean not the app! I'm guilty of wasting lots of time looking at these methods but not actually getting on top of the mess...
Willpower, time and focus! I have hoarding tendencies and I really struggle. A magic wand would be good!

Well I know what you mean. But at the same time, there is something to be said for not living in a shit tip. I say this as someone who spent a whole day yday sorting and tidying and yes cleaning.
The satisfaction I have today and the calm way my kids are
Playing in their tidy space is lovely

It's equal opportunities despite the name!

Wanting tips to keep on top of having a comfortable livable environment is a perfectly normal thing to do.

It certainly doesn't equal worrying about cleaning

^ This, in bucketloads.

And I don't think it is missing the point of the thread at all. It shouldn't just be up to mum to do all this stuff. Everybody over the age of 2 in the house should be perfectly capable of pulling their weight as well.

The woman who came up with the method is referring to herself, she’s the organised mum. She’s not implying that it’s just for mums.

sdfsdipf9ue · 31/07/2022 17:01

I can't begin to imagine what would possess anyone to clean their skirting boards once a decade, never mind once a month.

<misses the point>

I disagree actually. She should have called it The Organised Parent.

We mums take on so much. The whole damned load of running the home, most of us. It pisses me off that such a book title exists in 2022.

glamourousindierockandroll · 31/07/2022 17:19

I like the TOMM app and also like Sweepy as that means that you can delegate tasks to other household members.

Apps aside though, yes you do need a bit of a tiered system. Daily (or more!) tasks such as general tidying, wiping down surfaces, laundry; weekly tasks such as bathrooms and dusting then medium and long term jobs such as ovens and clearing out cupboards.

Spectre8 · 31/07/2022 17:32

I have never cleaned my skirting boards. When I vacuum I just run it across the top to remove the dust. What are you doing that requires skirting boards washing...I get it if you spilled thing against the wall and it ran over the skirting board it thats like an incredibly rare occurrence.

I just use my vacuum for alot of cleaning, fuck getting dusters out i use the soft brush to vacuum up dust from the windowsills, shelves, top of skirting boards and tops of wardrobes....gets done every week since the vacuum is on and means i never have to deep clean. Any non eating surface gets the soft brush vacuum 🤣 time saver

My sofa and beds are off the floor so easy to swing vacuum underneath no need to move furniture.

BertieBotts · 31/07/2022 17:38

Agree, I never clean skirting boards, might occasionally dust them. Would wipe if something was spilled on them.
