What is your going to bed routine?

Not your beauty/teeth brushing thing, but things you do downstairs before going to bed at night?

Mine are:

Bring any laundry that's drying outside on the clothes airer in to the kitchen.

Put food scraps from dinner into the food caddy. And any other rubbish in kitchen is in bin.

Check back door is locked.

Open washing machine door and powder drawer to prevent mould/smells.

Make sure the dish cloth and washing up sponge have been wrung out in boiling water and are drying.

Get myself a large glass of water with lots of ice.

The washing machine thing is a little tip if you want it.

Switch/fold any laundry that needs doing.

Load and turn on dishwasher.

Let dog out for the toilet.

Shut cat in kitchen.

Lock doors.

Go up to bed with a pint of ice water.

All I do is turn off the TV, sometimes check the back door is locked, have a glass of water - and that's it!

topcat2014 · 29/07/2022 22:11

What's all this "taking water upstairs: stuff? I have never done that. It's it a law?

TalkingToMyselfAgain · 29/07/2022 22:12

Skinnermarink............ how wonderful to have foxes and badgers around. Very special.

catwithflowers · 29/07/2022 22:15

Take puppy into the garden for last wee then pop him into his crate. Check doors, check dishwasher on, say goodnight to cat and old dog.

Oh and husband if he's still up ♥️😂😂

Blackdiame · 29/07/2022 22:25

Take mugs back into kitchen and set out clean ones ready for the morning.
If it hasn't rained I'd water the planters and hanging baskets out in the garden.
Check the cat has come back inside and close the windows and draw the curtains
Check all the doors are locked.
Lights off and go upstairs.
Brush teeth, wash face and get changed into bed clothes.
Get into bed where cat will come sit on my lap and look at me expecting treats.
Dh is usually snoring my this point and I'm faffing about online (like right now)
I eventually pick up a book and fall asleep 2 pages in.

Mistymountain · 29/07/2022 22:34

I put the empty wine glass in the kitchen and go upstairs.

Thanks! I love them. Not countryside either- the Surrey side of Croydon! This year was amazing as the adults brought their babies. So should be able to enjoy them all for another generation at least 😍

Put the recycling out,
load the dishwasher if needed,
put the washing on,
check all fridges and freezers are closed properly.
Lock shed and garage,
make sure there’s a towel in the bathroom
make sure oven is turned off
windows and doors locked
take the dog out
make sure work stuff/kids school stuff is ready for next morning

ChristinePerfect · 29/07/2022 22:39

DH sits at the piano with a ciggy, then we do a dance round the house in our dressing gowns, unplugging TVs and heaters, we check and make sure we've closed every door, fires can start in so many different ways...

(Public safety advert from my childhood but not as frightening as the don't swim in reservoirs one)

LimboLass · 29/07/2022 22:40

Fall asleep watching shite on TV. Go upstairs and wash my teeth. Go to bed.

D0lphine · 29/07/2022 22:42

I just make sure the dog has had a wee.

Northernsoullover · 29/07/2022 22:44

Sorry to be such a killjoy but a fire safety officer I work with said never ever EVER run dishwashers or washing machines at night.

Thearex · 29/07/2022 22:49

I say to DP 'is it time for Bedfordshire?'

He gets us a drink to take up, I check the door, turn everything off.
PJ's, contact lenses, teeth etc.

We then both go and check what's going on out of our front bedroom window. (Nothing normally!)

Alarms set. Kindle

DP goes off like a light switch.

I struggle falling asleep.

Curious- why do you use both a washing up sponge AND a dish cloth?

Sponge is for washing dishes.

Cloth is for wiping surfaces.

You can't use one for both.... !

CuriousCatfish · 29/07/2022 23:04

I never go to bed the same time as my DP, he always goes to bed first.

KatharineofAragon · 29/07/2022 23:11

All these people feeding their cats last thing at night.. does the cat get fed first thing in the morning and then not again till 10 pm? I feed mine in the morning and 5 ocklock.

I was surprised how few of my friends don't brush their teeth before bed - I thought everyone did that 😂 My mum always made all of us brush our teeth before bed so it's just habit for us.

We've usually done all the dishes/sorting of washing a few hours before bed so bedtime routine is quite straightforward. Feed our lovely gerbils and have some cuddles with them if they're feeling social, grab a glass of cordial, brush teeth and into bed.

Are you drinking cordial after you've brushed your teeth?

Chicca1970 · 29/07/2022 23:32

Clean out and put fresh water out and hay for Frank our house rabbit.

Bath, cleanse & moisturise, Clean teeth.

Lock doors, say ‘night’ to ds24 & dd15.

Make sure dishes are done - open a few windows.

Read the News or Mumsnet Active on iPhone, sometimes listen to LBC if Tom Swarbrick.

Sleep after a cup of Earl Grey :)

NotSoSlimShady8 · 29/07/2022 23:52

Put out all toys for cats, change water for cats, feed cats, set up cosy area on sofa for cats …. Love the cats 💁‍♀️😂 …

tidy the entire living kitchen area (open plan) so that it’s nice for us in the morning …

check the doors locked 634 times …

have a wee and sit until I can’t drip no more cos I’m sick of bloody getting up for a wee 4 times a night!!!

spray my bed with sleepy mist

mackthepony · 30/07/2022 03:11

😂

Is that a euphemism? 🤔

wibblewobbleball · 30/07/2022 06:39

After dinner one of us cleans up the kitchen and straightens the downstairs, the other baths DC. Then one puts DC to bed while one finishes locking up - double check everything is tidy, lay out coffee cups / DC milk bottle for morning, close all blinds, lock all doors, and give the dog some bedtime biscuits before switching off the lights and coming upstairs.
