What is your going to bed routine?

Not your beauty/teeth brushing thing, but things you do downstairs before going to bed at night?

Mine are:

Bring any laundry that's drying outside on the clothes airer in to the kitchen.

Put food scraps from dinner into the food caddy. And any other rubbish in kitchen is in bin.

Check back door is locked.

Open washing machine door and powder drawer to prevent mould/smells.

Make sure the dish cloth and washing up sponge have been wrung out in boiling water and are drying.

Get myself a large glass of water with lots of ice.

The washing machine thing is a little tip if you want it.

I like to get my baby’s clothes out for the next day

I find laying out a little vest and socks and picking an outfit relaxing lol

faithtrustandpixiedust · 29/07/2022 20:44

After wrestling 2yo DD to bed I tidy the kitchen, wash dinner dishes, bring any washing in that's out, fill washing machine ready to go on in the morning, sort DD's bag for the morning, tidy toys in the livingroom, sort sofa out, feed the fish, take anything out the freezer for dinner next day, pour myself a cold glass of something, shower, teeth, pjs, into bed then aimlessly scroll SM for a while till I drift off then repeat the next day 🤪

EspeciallyDeIighted · 29/07/2022 20:56

Teeth, contact lenses etc
Shut bedroom curtains
Change into nightclothes
Any tidying that needs doing in bedroom
Set alarm
Plug phone and apple watch onto charge
Read for a bit
Chat to teenagers who come to life post 11pm
Lights out and sleep

DH comes up later than me and does lights, door locking etc. We always leave the washing machine door open after use so that isn’t a night time job here.

I’m surprised at so many taking water up to bed, I’d be waking up to go to the loo if I drank at bedtime, last drink is an hour or so before going up.

The OP said : 'Not your beauty/teeth brushing thing, but things you do downstairs before going to bed at night?'

Yet everyone is banging on about teeth brushing 🙄

TalkingToMyselfAgain · 29/07/2022 21:06

I feed the cat at 10pm then let him out
Put washing machine on
Make sure the kitchen is tidy
Take my 2 tablets
Get the cat in
Lock up and go to bed

PeloAddict · 29/07/2022 21:06

I live in a flat Grin but
Take medication
Feed the cat
Check doors and windows are locked
Go to bed

Realise I have chronic insomnia and can't sleep so get back up. Again

ouch321 · 29/07/2022 21:13

Curious- why do you use both a washing up sponge AND a dish cloth?

CormoranStrike · 29/07/2022 21:15

Wander up to bed, listen to some radio.

that’s it - I am first up the stairs so have nothing to do by way of nighttime checks

Scabbersweasley · 29/07/2022 21:26

Sort all the baby's bottles out for the night and following morning.
Let the cat in and feed her.
Cleanse/tone/moisturise.
Bring the baby to bed and feed.
Scroll Tik Tok while husband sorts the dogs.
Lights out!

cookiecreammmpie · 29/07/2022 21:29

Go to the toilet, make tea, let the dog out for a wee before taking him up to bed with me. Husband will check doors are locked and everything is off.

TheGoodDoctorTheSecond · 29/07/2022 21:31

Drink wine, make sure doors are locked, take clothes off, get into bed, set alarm.

familyissues12345 · 29/07/2022 21:33

Put dishwasher on

Load washer and put on timer so it's finished for when I get up

Let dog out

Give dog biscuit

Close windows/switch off lights

Mothhunter · 29/07/2022 21:34

Check dc are still in their beds with duvets somewhere in the vicinity of their bodies.

Check backdoor is securely locked, drag bin in front of it so the dog will hear if the crackheads next door decide to break in.

Check the rest of the house is locked.

Look at snake. Tell him he's a good snake.

Ditto the dog.

Close kitchen door so the hamster doesn't keep us up all night with her 'silent' hamster wheel.

Turn bedroom light on, switch on bedside lamp, turn bedroom light off, get in bed then immediately turn off bedside lamp.

Mumsnet until I pass out.

Skinnermarink · 29/07/2022 19:11

Put water out for badgers. Put peanuts out for badgers. Watch badgers.

put scraps out for foxes. Watch foxes.

make up formula for DS, put in fridge because he drinks them cold, the little weirdo. put his clothes out for nursery.

teeth etc. Ponder if can be arsed to do tonner/sérum/might cream. Invariably can’t. Ponder if can be arsed to initiate sex with DH. Invariably can’t.

@Skinnermarink

Put water and peanuts out for the badgers wins the thread 🥇

Bad day?

MyBottomDecides · 29/07/2022 21:45

In theory, lay table for breakfast, put on washing with timer delay, put on dishwasher, get clothes out for morning, plus door checks etc.

In practice that happens about once a week. Mornings are always better when it does though.

CuriousCatfish · 29/07/2022 21:47

florenceandthemac · 29/07/2022 21:39

Bad day?

No. I just read the OP.

peaceandove · 29/07/2022 21:50

Tidy up living room so it's nice to walk into next morning.
Make sure kitchen surfaces and table are clear.
I switch off lights while DH locks front and back doors because only he has the 'knack' to jiggle the back door lock.
I always get us both a glass of water to take to bed.
Upstairs, I switch off all the lights except for the little lamp on the landing. We've always left this on since our DDs were little, just incase they got up in the night to go to the loo so it could light their way. We still leave it on even now, and even when both DDs are away at university. The house just doesn't feel right if we don't.

StressfulBedtimes · 29/07/2022 21:50

Ask dog where she is sleeping, upstairs or down
Turn lights off
Bolt front door
Fill water bottles
Check on kids, usually put the littlest back in her bed (she likes to sleep on the floor but I worry she’ll get a stiff neck or something)
Skin routine
Put diffuser thing on
Watch ASMR until I fall asleep

All the tidying and setting up for the morning is done in between dinner & kids bedtimes so once they’re down I’m done

StripesSpots · 29/07/2022 21:52

DH comes up after me so all the licking up etc is his job. I bring up a cup of tea (to have in bed reading) and a big glass of water for after I’ve brushed my teeth and done my beauty bits.

I write a Gratitudes list most nights, and sometimes meditate.

Hbh17 · 29/07/2022 21:54

Nothing. Certainly wouldn't do anything housework-related in the evening. I suppose lock the front door would be about it.

flowerycurtain · 29/07/2022 21:57

The lovely small moments of life in this thread have made me smile. Also how different peoples lives are.

Mine is around 9pm Dh will say, oh it's. A bit late to start a new program. I'll empty the dishwasher, he'll let the dog out. We both check on the children, say good night and off to bed.

Titsywoo · 29/07/2022 22:00

I don't do many domestic tasks before bed. I prefer to do those after work then relax in the evening. Before bed these are the only thing I always do:-

Check everything is locked and main lights are all off/hall lamp and outside lights on

Get glass of water

Check kids ok and say goodnight

Brush teeth and have wee

Get into bed, set alarm and watch Tiktok for an hour 😁

mum11970 · 29/07/2022 22:04

Dogs need to be let out for last wee but other than that nothing. No routines or checks. Hopefully the last person up will turn off the tv and lights but doesn’t always happen.

PiggySue · 29/07/2022 22:09

Check doors are locked.
Switch off the living room's two extension boards at the mains.
Get a small glass of water to drink.
Close kitchen door.
Check cat's food and water bowls.
Have a wee.
Brush teeth.
Get into bed with phone, kindle or book and glasses.
Read for 10 to 15 mins
Lights out.
