Ever met anyone who (you thought) pronounced their own name wrongly?

Inspired by a few posts on the Secret Confessions thread. I once met a woman called Leigh. She insisted that everyone must call her “Lay”. Also, a whole family whose surname is Onions, but they pronounce it “O’Nyons”. Like, just own it or change the spelling. There are more.

Knew someone whose parents liked the name ‘Guy’ - but obviously didn’t know how it was pronounced… He was raised being called ‘Gooey’…

Did you really really?

Mindthegob · 31/07/2022 16:41

Let’s say my parents called me Elizabeth and I have a slight lisp which makes saying my name unbearable. I call myself “Beth” on the phone to avoid saying it

CouldBeOuting · 31/07/2022 16:48

My DDs first boyfriend was Guy. Pronounced to rhyme with buy (bye).

Now I know it should have been gooey I wonder what his parents were thinking.

And Guy Martin….. he has been known to make me a bit gooey too……

🤯

@spacewitch99 Why? Why? I mean, I guess you just think you’re being funny but how is this funny at this stage?

Yep. My experience too.

But again, most people on here seem to be completely ignorant of the fact that different regions and nationalities pronounce things differently.

My dad definitely wasn’t Australian!

Classic!

And all those kids who should have been making a Gooey Fawkes and asking for a Penny for the Gooey got it wrong all this time.

This Guy story is starting to make me think of the American couple who saw a word on the pregnant woman's medical chart and used it as their daughter's name, pronouncing it 'Your-EEN'
Urban or American rural legend, or cautionary tale...

Violinist64 · 31/07/2022 17:20

I’m amazed that Fiona is considered an exotic name. It was quite popular when I was born (1960s) and I was nearly given the name myself. It is always pronounced Fee-ona and sometimes shortened to Fi, pronounced Fee. It’s pleasant enough but hardly exotic. It will probably come back in fashion in the next fifty years or so.

Bubbleguppette · 31/07/2022 17:33

When you say Fee-ona @Violinist64, do you mean Fee-OH-na, or something else?

stacestation · 31/07/2022 17:35

Friffle · 31/07/2022 16:24

I feel like I actually know Gooey at this point.

He's a great lad.

😅

HaveringWavering · 31/07/2022 17:42

I'm quite tempted to start a thread on the Baby Names topic.

"We are expecting our first bubs soon, just found out it's a boy! I really love the name Guy but DH insists it's pronounced "Gooey" because his second cousin's hairdresser's first husband called her son that. Can that really be true?"

Pointynoseowner · 31/07/2022 17:45

Many years ago I met a girl called Ophelia Balls 🤣

HaveringWavering · 31/07/2022 17:47

@Buttonjugs did he watch a lot of Neighbours maybe ? Smile

Sagealicious · 31/07/2022 17:51

Gotten to 40 pages and I'm shocked no one has mentioned all the L-a's they know instead we get all the gooey stories coming out of the woodwork. L-a must be devastated that her name is no longer getting a mention. Wonder what Oranjello and Lemonjello are up to these days 😉

SirChenjins · 31/07/2022 17:55

And where’s Pocahontas these days? 😂

stacestation · 31/07/2022 17:55

Didn't Pocahontas McGinty also turn out to be urban legend? Prompted by a pp who might know @PocahontasMcGinty

Violinist64 · 31/07/2022 17:57

@Bubbleguppette Fee-oh-na

CharlieAndTooManyCharacters · 31/07/2022 17:58

Ah Pocahontas mcginty.

I’m sure there are some Pocahontases out there. Perhaps not with the surname McGinty though. Alas.

Even Gyles Brandreth used that one.

Bubbleguppette · 31/07/2022 18:06

Thanks @Violinist64

SirChenjins · 31/07/2022 18:12

Someone that my DD was at school with has just called her baby Bobbeigh - which I guess is Bobby rather than Bobbay, but who knows.

bpirockin · 31/07/2022 18:34

A teacher friend had a boy start at school named Guy, but he did not raise his hand when she called his name. It turned out he was being called Gooey and his parents had picked the name from a book.

There are two 30-something women on Ancestry with Pocahontas as a middle name.

bpirockin · 31/07/2022 18:36

I see he's not the only Gooey one!

Yes, he's one of the very many fictional ones.
