Ever met anyone who (you thought) pronounced their own name wrongly?

Inspired by a few posts on the Secret Confessions thread. I once met a woman called Leigh. She insisted that everyone must call her “Lay”. Also, a whole family whose surname is Onions, but they pronounce it “O’Nyons”. Like, just own it or change the spelling. There are more.

No one pronounces their own name incorrectly … the correct pronunciation is how they choose to pronounce it

Sean pronounced Seen, Sian pronounced Seeann, Anaīs pronounced Annay -
if the pronunciation is correct the spelling is wrong; if the spelling is correct the pronunciation is wrong.

I know an actor called Ralph who insists his name is pronounced Rafe

That is traditionally correct.

I worked with a woman whose name was spelled Renée (think Allo Allo) who pronounced it Reenie.

That’s the anglicised pronunciation. It’s quite standard.

itssquidstella · 30/07/2022 21:28

I went to school with a Kerren pronounced Kieran. I think his parents couldn't spell.

Mind you, I have a Scandinavian surname but long ago conceded to an anglicised pronunciation 🤷‍♀️

Worked with someone called Cheryl who insisted that pronouncing it Sheryl was common (even though it's got French origins), and said it was CH as in cheddar.

Gagaandgag · 30/07/2022 21:31

I knew a guy with the surname Leggett (leg - it) but insisted it was pronounced “Leee-jey”

Cheryl is fine, and as valid as Sheryl. Its origins are equally English as French. It’s a compilation name.

I’m a Share-on. Spelled Sharon

Plymouth brethren family. All the Share-ons I’ve ever met have Brethren connections.

I hate it. My boss can’t do it.

@Cocolapew The first few Sara’s I met all pronounced it like that - Zara but with a soft s at the start. But the two most recent ones have spelt it Sara but pronounced it Sarah which feels wrong to me - like saying Nicole and Nicola are pronounced exactly the same for example.

Someone I know pronounces her name Nicola like Nick cola.

I think we must now accept that gooey is an accepted pronunciation of Guy😂

We should have turned this thread into a drinking game.

I know someone called yuG because his parents saw a reflection of the name Guy in the mirror.

WTAF is going on with everyone telling the same fucking Gooey story as if it’s some kind of unique tale that only they know? I know no one ever RTFT but this is fucking ridiculous! It’s starting to feel like some kind of bizarre hazing ritual: posters conspiring to discover how many times they can tell the exact same story with a straight face before the thread implodes?

Pudmyboy · 30/07/2022 22:16

I knew a Danish girl called Jane, pronounced 'Yayneh' in Danish, which sounded exotic to me, but she preferred to pronounce it 'Jane' as that sounded exotic to her!

CharlieAndTooManyCharacters · 30/07/2022 22:21

Personally I think gooey is an excellent pronunciation of guy. We should applaud it.

Told this before. I worked years ago at council. Interviewing young mum with little girl. Taking her details.”So this is your only child? Nike? “(Pronounced it Nikey) “Nikey? It’s fucking Nike (rhyming with Mike), you daft cow” So that was me told.

pilkywilkymoansalot · 30/07/2022 22:33

Our neighbours had a son called Johnathan, I think they were from Essex and called him Johnafan

SelkieDreaming · 30/07/2022 22:36

Me. 🙄 Only discovered a few years back that Ingrid is not pronounced ingG - Grid, but is meant to be prounced with a soft sounding "Ing" (as in "sing") followed by the "rid". (I've had my name pronounced by others as "IN - GRID" too.)

Sean. Said as it's spelt rather than like Shaun. It still confuses me and makes me question if it's me that's been pronouncing it wrong 😕

Here in N.I. Sean is mostly pronounced like Shaun. Unless you're a Derry wan, then it's pronounced Shaan, like Sian. Just to confuse things further.

Remember that American R&B singer Ciara? I first heard her name at the start of one of her songs & thought she was called 'Sierra' like the car. Then saw her name on TOTP or summat & wondered who the eff Ciara was 😕

disconnected101 · 30/07/2022 22:49

I worked with a woman called Andrea, who insisted that it was pronounced AnDRAYah

Derkle · 30/07/2022 22:51

I knew a Juanita once who pronounced her name as Ja(r)Neata

This made me lol 😆

My uncle was a headteacher. He interviewed a couple who wanted to enrol their son Gooey. They spelt it Guy. Obviously never heard it pronounced.

I think the kind reaction is to suggest that the uncle was kidding, rather than that the poster is embellishing the truth.
