… was the same as your DP’s surname, would you take it on after marriage?

I would never take anyone’s surname, even less so because of marriage. I already have a surname.

And if somehow I did change my surname, it definitely wouldn’t be a repeat of my first name.

FreudayNight · 29/07/2022 06:02

Like become Rose Rose?

No, actually I wouldn’t take on any man’s name in any circumstances nowadays

Yes… I’ve known 2 women who became their own equivalent of Rose Rose and I thought it was quite unlucky for those who do like to take on their DP’s surname.

Oh I went to a uni lecture and the lecturer's first name and second were really similar something like Jan Jans it was just odd.

Nope I'd keep my own name.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/07/2022 06:24

Magnus Magnusson was wicked cool.

Still no.

ReeseWitherfork · 29/07/2022 06:29

I had an uncle James James and I’m now curious what he thought of his name. The fact that I don’t know suggests it wasn’t that big of a deal.

And to answer the question… no.

Goldfishmountainclimber · 29/07/2022 06:48

No.
But actually wouldn’t take their surname anyway.

MissedItByThisMuch · 29/07/2022 06:50

I didn’t take my husband’s surname either though it was easier to spell and sounded better with my first name - I already have a name. So certainly not in the circumstances you describe.

jadedspark · 29/07/2022 06:51

No. I'd take my partners surname but only if I liked it.

SummerLobelia · 29/07/2022 06:59

I have a distant relation called Anthony Anthony.

I did think that was really unfair of his parents.

Charlavail · 29/07/2022 07:14

I was just thinking that few woman's names are surnames and then realised my own was 😅

EspeciallyDeIighted · 29/07/2022 07:18

No, we were both happy to keep our own surnames.

GretaVanFleet · 29/07/2022 07:18

I once met a Steven Stevenson (might have been ph) and I still think that’s a great name so it’s a yes from me.

My DD friend from school has the surname Virgin which is her father’s surname taken by her mother. Poor girl got so much grief.

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 29/07/2022 07:29

I know an Alison Allison. And Edie Melia (actor) had a wife called Celia.

TigerRag · 29/07/2022 07:30

My surname is a boys name. Thankfully, no one in the family has it as their first name or a similar first name.

GAW19 · 29/07/2022 07:33

I worked with someone who got married and became Kelly Kelly Confused

KangarooKenny · 29/07/2022 07:34

Having changed my name when I got married I would never do so again.
But then I’d never get so legally and financially trapped again.

PinkButtercups · 29/07/2022 07:34

No. Absolutely not.

I probably wouldn't take DP's last name anyway. If I did I'd keep mine also.

Hmm
Antarcticant · 29/07/2022 07:41

Yes - I didn't like my maiden name and I think it would be quite amusing!

ErrolTheDragon · 29/07/2022 07:44

Why the frowny face there, women not changing their name is quite normal now. I did change my name when I married in the dark ages 80s mightn't do it now and certainly wouldn't if it was to something that sounded silly with my forename.
The parents who deliberately name their boys with the surname sound weird tbh. Why would anyone do that?

SpaceJam33 · 29/07/2022 07:51

Alison Allison is one of the examples I knew too!

Where do you live? North Wilts by any chance?

CthulhuInDisguise · 29/07/2022 17:28

I know an Angela Angel, and a Joan Jones. I don't think I'd do it. I took my late DH's surname and I will never change that.

BusterGroove · 29/07/2022 17:50

I know someone who did change her name upon marriage and then had two female rhyming names as her first and surname. I don’t want to say it, but similar to Molly Polly!
I wouldn’t have done that, but did change my name when I got married because I preferred his surname to mine!
