I'm going to the cinema tomorrow evening... on my own!

Been abroad on my own several times, eat out alone ALL the time but somehow never had the nerve to do this... was going to see the live show earlier this year in London but it was too problematic. Mum isn't interested, no partner, can't be arsed trying to organise friends... so I've booked a ticket for tomorrow night and I shall sit glued to the screen in the dark with my black cherry ice cream!

(It's Prima Facie with the phenomenal Jodie Comer. I cannot bloody wait!)

Well it's one of those things that everyone on MN claims to do (not saying they don't) but I never know anyone that does in real life!

I've never seen anyone on their own either.

CbaThinkingOfAUsername · 28/07/2022 22:10

Sounds great! Enjoy!

StRaphael · 28/07/2022 22:13

I do this regularly. I go to one where they serve wine! Recently watched TopGun and Operation Mincemeat with a glass of red and a packet of sweets. AWESOME.

CormoranStrike · 28/07/2022 22:15

I love going to the cinema on my own - and Prima Facie is outstanding, Jodie Comer is almost unbelievably good.

NeverHadANickname · 28/07/2022 22:27

I used to love doing this on a Friday night after work. I sometimes would get a hotdog and a bar of chocolate too so food covered for the night.

SE13Mummy · 28/07/2022 22:40

I go to the cinema alone more than I do with company, usually during the daytime on my day off but in my early twenties I'd think nothing of going in the evening. These days, I think nothing of going along to the OAP screening at the local indie cinema. I don't get a free cup of tea or biscuit because I'm not old enough to qualify but I survive.

UrsulaPandress · 28/07/2022 22:42

Saw it last night and it was mesmerising.

ColmanFlamingo · 28/07/2022 22:44

Definitely want to do this on one of my days off when the kids are back in school!

ThisMustBeThePlaice · 28/07/2022 22:44

I did this OP! Honestly half the people in my screening were women on their own, so it’s unlikely to just be you.

ladygindiva · 28/07/2022 22:45

My best mate saw this, said it was AMAZING X

BiscoffSundae · 28/07/2022 22:48

I agree it’s one of those MN things that I’ve never known anyone to do irl and I never see people at the cinema on their own either it’s always couples or groups of friends

OnTheBoardwalk · 28/07/2022 22:49

Do it!

when working in London every week I finally plucked up courage to go to the theatre on my own. Absolutely loved it and nobody looked at me at all

only comment I got was woman coming down front to look at orchestra pit asked me how I got front row seat and empty seat next to me. I told her I’d booked it that day and the empty seat was the photographer who took some photos to start them said goodbye and left the theatre

the woman came and joined me in the empty seat on the front row

you'll be sorry if you don’t

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 28/07/2022 22:52

I love going to the cinema on my own, it feels like such a treat!

In my student days I used to work for a cinema chain and I can assure you there were always people coming in on their own, it was really common.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 28/07/2022 22:56

Ooooh, I love a solo cinema trip. I don't actually tell anyone I'm going, lest they want to come with me.

We have a fancy local cinema, so I book an armchair, and get a cheese board with either a coffee or a glass of wine, depending on time of day, and snuggle down to enjoy a film without anyone to interrupt or distract me. It's absolute bliss.

Downtherefordancing · 28/07/2022 23:04

When I clicked on this Op, I knew you’d been to see Prima Facie. I saw it last Sunday. JC is phenomenal.
BTW, I’ve been to cinema alone a few times a love it. Why not? You don’t need to talk to anyone. Just sit and watch 😊

FMSucks · 28/07/2022 23:05

My friend goes regularly on her own as does my DM who is 77! Enjoy!

PetalParty · 28/07/2022 23:10

A romantic date with oneself, you’ve made me want to do it again after years of not doing so… I’d had some of the best days like that taking long walks and exploring unfamiliar areas and checking out their cinemas for a change of scene.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 28/07/2022 23:29

I loved going to my local cinema alone when I was single. When I worked away from home occasionally I'd go then too and pick a film my DP wouldn't want to see. Or I'd finish work early and go on my way home, maybe have a nice meal out afterwards too.

I don't know anyone else that goes alone though. I miss it. I have a toddler and a baby now so can't imagine a time when I'll be able to do this again.

LovinglifeAF · 28/07/2022 23:36

Oh enjoy! I go on my own a lot, I love it. I went to see Prima Facie last week but have seen Downton, Belfast, the Phantom of the Open on my own recently too. Bag of revels and a latte! Love it

Mother87 · 28/07/2022 23:41

I do this several times a month - one of my greatest pleasuresGrin

Mother87 · 28/07/2022 23:42

Sorry - missed the last bit... Saw Prima Facie alone last Saturday night - brilliant evening..

HollowTalk · 28/07/2022 23:49

Jodie Comer S absolutely fantastic in it. You'll love it. Take a big bag of tissues though!

HollowTalk · 28/07/2022 23:49

Is, sorry!

Prunel · 28/07/2022 23:54

Ive only done it twice
I did love it though something quite liberating about it
plus it’s the easiest place to be alone, it’s dark and no one’s looking at you

enjoy op!

QueenOfHiraeth · 29/07/2022 00:08

I've never done this but am so tempted!
