Looking to move to Tynemouth/Whitley Bay/ cullercoats/north shields area. Can anyone advise where would be the best areas to be would be. We don't need to be near schools but do need 4 bedrooms so those sorts of properties seem to come up more rarely. I keep an eye on rightmove but nothing has come up yet that we like/can afford. Need some garden out the back too. Budget is top end of £550k.

Benton is a bit hit and miss. Gosforth is lovely and Jesmond but you won’t get much garden. Also students around Jesmond!

Its all so easy to get around though.

The nicer areas of North Shields to look at are those bordering Tynemouth and on Northumberland Park, near the Tynemouth golf club, Percy Park rugby club and King Edwards primary school. Preston Village near the old Queen Alexandra college, near the Spread Eagle pub
The areas of North Shields to avoid are Meadow Well, Chirton, Percy Main, New York and Norham Road area. They are mostly all ex-council properties that would be for sale, a few new build estates.
Preston Grange and Marden Estates are middling and if you aren’t bothered about schools they could be ok and can get more for your money- they are more residential estates with semis etc as opposed to the first areas mentioned are more the old fashioned Tyneside terraces- lovely original features but small yards and difficult parking.

Think N Shields is a bit of a shithole to avoid

It doesn't seem two minutes since we were saying that about Whitley Bay though. And those who bought there back in the days before the Spanish City was knocked down will be doing really rather well now...

The Spanish City hasn’t been knocked down 🤔

I would assume pp was referring to the fairground that was there which is now gone as opposed to the dome which is still standing.

Sorry, was I not specific enough?! Not the Spanish City as we know it now.
The fairground, the roller coasters etc, which I spent hours on as a kid. Most definitely knocked down - and now a school is on the site, I think.

Ah ok, Whitley Bay Pleasure Gardens? The fun fair (Turners) does return to the Links as a travelling fairground a few times throughout the year to keep the tradition alive 👍🏻

I love that house! I really like that boxy 60s look and mid century furnishing. Sadly I am not looking to move to Tyneside but that house would be my dream.

Well this estate would be your dream. A lot of the residents are getting on a bit now having bought when the estate was new in the early 70s.

Many haven't made massive changes to the interiors. Lots of lovely powder blue, baby pink, mint green bathroom suites. Lovely 🤣

Yep. Marine Park first school is there now and a play park.

What about Durham coastline?

Never heard of it referred to as a pleasure Gardens. It was always just the Spanish city. Tbh I can barely remember the dome being there because we were only interested in the rides and the candy floss 🤣

I'm fully aware that the dome was always there. It was just some random backdrop.

Yes, that’s right Marine Park First School, and currently a cafe home being built there too. Sorry, Spanish City means the Dome to me, which has had a big rejuvenation over the last 5 years.

It is very nice down there, especially when that festival by the sea thing is on.

Though I think the design of hotel is not in keeping with the rest of the buildings.

OP you are going to have to think about what is most important to you - proximity to the coast, proximity to Newcastle, buying somewhere 'done' where all you have to do is unpack, access to the metro. There are loads of places in the area that will give you most of what you want for your budget (or way under it e.g. Blyth where to could probably get two four bedroomed houses for you budget). But as you can't find exactly what you want for your budget something will have to give either you hold out for a doer upper in Tynemouth/Whitley Bay (and cultivate a great relationship with an Estate Agent to help discover such bargains) or you look further inland or further up the coast. Only you know what your priorities are.

That's north shields but within spitting distance of tynemouth.

About 20 minutes walk to the coast (or about 5 minutes by bus which stops on the other side of the green)

Its nice round there.

Nice area of N Shields OP- check my earlier post then check the map view of that property- I mentioned Northumberland Park, Tynemouth golf club, King Edwards primary school. Look how close it is to all!
