So sad x

OP posts:

He was brilliant as Catherine Tate's granddad in Doctor Who.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/07/2022 10:03

Loved him, he was such a familiar face growing up (I was born in the mid 60s). He and Brian Cant were my TV dads.

WinterMusings · 28/07/2022 10:07

🥲🥲Brilliant, lovely bloke, half my childhood was stuff he was in/narrated.

My Dad always used to 'Right said Fred' 😀
My Dad died when he was 65, so I guess comparatively BC has had a good long life & was still acting, so he's had a full life.

His wife died last year, so that must have had a huge impact on him.

I hope it was peacefully in his sleep. It's the least he deserved!!

Throughtheroof · 28/07/2022 10:07

Oh that is sad.

MatildaJayne · 28/07/2022 10:48

Oh no, no more Orinoco. What a big part of my childhood he was. He was a contemporary of my dad, too. Except my dad died 18 years ago. I kind of hoped Bernard Cribbins would live forever.

Topseyt123 · 28/07/2022 10:54

It's sad. A life well lived though for sure.

As a child I loved his story telling on Jackanory. I'm sure he was occasionally on Playschool too, and I know he was in Doctor Who.

I think he was almost a staple of my childhood really.

Same here.

If BC didn't already have a knighthood, he should be awarded one posthumously. If that isn't allowed, change the rules!

This surprised me also, Bernard Cribbins OBE and not SIR Bernard Cribbins, being one of the most popular and well loved characters of his time!!

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/07/2022 11:54

😢

RhannionKPSS · 28/07/2022 11:59

That’s sad news, he was wonderful & warm in everything he did, especially fond of him in The Railway Children & Jackanory.

viques · 28/07/2022 12:04

Sad but sort of happy, he lived a good life, his wife died last year so his final few months must have been a bit lonely. I hope his family are overwhelmed by the love and affection that people are expressing both for his body of work and the memories he invokes.

my favourite Jackanory was about a little girl with a pet raven called Mortimer, pretty sure it was BC telling it. Must go and google.

darlingdodo · 28/07/2022 12:09

Viques, remember those - Quentin Blake did the book illustrations and Bernard Cribbens reading of them was sublime.

Mangledrake · 28/07/2022 12:12

Rest in Peace Bernard.

I feel this board should know there's a Playmobil version of Right Said Fred

RB68 · 28/07/2022 12:13

Sad day but it comes to us all - he will always be the Station Master in Railway Children for me

Antarcticant · 28/07/2022 12:17

A great actor. So many performances to choose from but if I had to pick favourites, it would be the spoon salesman in Fawlty Towers, closely followed by Albert Poopdecker in Carry On Jack. And of course his brilliant narration of The Wombles.

PuppyMonkey · 28/07/2022 12:20

What a great life he had, apparently he knew everyone and everybody adored him from The Beatles to big movie stars.

I watched the Railway Children last week and that scene where it’s his birthday and he’s really cross and indignant about being given charity stuff - then as Bobby reads out all the wonderful notes and he realises how much everybody loves him. It’s so moving and all because of Bernard’s beautiful acting.

Oh I was sure that Arabel & Mortimer was told by Cribbens on Jackanory – it's another of my favourite childhood memories – but I couldn't find confirmation.

If you think so too, we're probably right.

darlingdodo · 28/07/2022 12:24

Arabel and Mortimer

PerkingFaintly · 28/07/2022 12:26

Cribbins, even.

Finally found it on IMDB. My goodness that's a fine list of Jackanories.

He was just wonderful

FidginSpinnins · 28/07/2022 12:48

Aww, Rest in peace Bernard. We were moving furniture yesterday and had 'Charlie and me' on the Alexa. Old Jack's boat reminds me of when DS was a toddler baby.

LIZS · 28/07/2022 12:52

@Mangledrake the ultimate accolade. Feel Sad at his passing. Such a versatile actor and part of my childhood. RIP Bernard.

takingmytimeonmyride · 28/07/2022 13:08

He was such a wonderful actor. Part of my childhood, and part of my kids childhood too, as they are big Doctor Who fans.

BlackeyedSusan · 28/07/2022 14:23

How sad. He will look be on in the many programs he has left behind.
