It sounds like something a Christian preacher said during a talk at our church in the late 1990s. As a teenager it offended me, and now 25+ years later as a married woman it offends me. This type of misogynistic/door-mat expectation of women was one of the things that made me stop going to church.

I think a marriage on that basis is unfair to both - the wife risks being trampled all over and the husband has the burden of being entirely responsible for the family. My husband and I prefer a partnership.
