I cracked and bought a new fountain pen

It's a beautiful colour and writes with a lovely, smooth, fine line; just what I wanted for my academic year planner.

I do not, however, need a new pen. I have 3 already. Help me!!

Like @LadyHelenaJustina I love to look at fountain pens on eBay, particularly vintage. I've only got one (cheapy) cartridge pen atm. It's a no nonsense one I bought for nostalgia reasons as I loved them at school.

A few years back I bought a few bottles of ink in beautiful colours including teal and a sort of sepia tone 😍. But I've never used them because I don't really ever write by hand anymore and my handwriting is terrible. 😞😬

PoundPill · 27/07/2022 01:54

I bought a couple of fancier pens than normal OP and also wrote a few lines about how well they wrote and how much I liked them compared to each other

I'm glad it's not just me that does this

caringcarer · 27/07/2022 02:26

I have 7 Waterman fountain pens and matching roller balls for each. My kids joke one for each day.

This might be the ideal thread to ask if anyone might recommend a founatin pen for a 12yo who has recently discovered that she prefers them over a biro or gel type pen? (Not too pricey though as a step up from the 69p one she found in Home Bargains!)

Have a look on amazon lots of nice pens fairly cheap. I used to use a disposable 'v pen' at work after one of my nice pens disappeared. If she's 12 I'd let her have a nice pen for home (maybe for Christmas) and a cheaper pen for anywhere else in case it got lost/stolen. My work one was disposable so no ink or cartridges to carry but I still used blotting paper.

After my pen went missing at work OH had Santa bring me a nice pen with my name engraved on it.

LadyHelenaJustina · 27/07/2022 09:53

OP, I think we need a photo of the notebook collection!

LadyHelenaJustina · 27/07/2022 09:56

Those Hong Dian pens look lovely…

cakegoblin · 27/07/2022 10:02

Ooh I love a fountain pen and mine broke recently - you have just inspired me to replace it. My handwriting looks a million times better and I am more confident in what I wrote when I use one.

I am a Ferris Wheel Press pen lover. I use a purple waterproof ink for very special books used outside in all weathers😉. Looking for a recommendation of notebooks with planets/celestial covers and one with darker plants on like deadly nightshades etc. please

LaChatte · 27/07/2022 10:05

I have far too many several fountain pens but only use one, it's a fine tip Waterman. I use it with Watermann turquoise ink (refillable cartridge). I got it in the sales a good decade or so ago, I think I paid something like 80€ instead of 120€. I would be distraught if I lost it, its genuinely one of my most prized possessions (the body is scratched and dented so hopefully no-one would want to nick it).
I really don't get on with any other size tips, my writing seems to go from elegant with F to childlike with M (I've never even tried B).
I also have a ridiculous collection of notebooks (I can't resist a good bargain, would never pay full price though). 12 DD helps with keeping the numbers down as she always has some new project on the go that requires a new book.
I sometimes think I should pack my job in and open a stationery shop. Our local little art shop (which has many beautiful pens and notebooks) is going to be for sale soon as the owner is retiring, I think maybe it's a sign.

I have a Waterman fountain pen set with some interchangeable nibs but I can't get on with it for some reason. The pen itself feels too big (but my hands are tiny). I love their inks though - nice, rich colours.

I'd never heard of Hong Dian until the other day when I was looking for a fine nib. My most used pen is my Noodlers Creaper because I do attempt flowing, swirly copperplate calligraphy but it's not that great!

palygold · 27/07/2022 12:40

Sorry, I spotted a bit of copperplate-type script in your notebook afterwards. It's not bad!

I like the slightly thicker nibs for attempting some sort of gothic script, though I rarely have use of it other than self enjoyment. I used to use it in greeting cards. Otherwise I too use a very fine nib.

I quickly wrote this because I couldn't find any where I hadn't written my name all over it 😂

Do it! A stationery shop, especially a small, independent one run by a truly knowledgeable enthusiast, is like a gift from God!

(The funniest url blooper imo)

ChagSameachDoreen · 27/07/2022 14:15

Three already!!

I have HUNDREDS of fountain pens: I've been collecting them for about 10 years.

Three is how many I carry around with me daily.

FreezyFreezy · 27/07/2022 15:08

Alright, I've been out-penned! 😂 I am skint though, in my defence, and although I have always loved stationery, I only bought my 1st fountain pen since high school just over a year ago. I'd forgotten how nice they are to write with until I bought a dip pen for a photo idea (photography, especially still-life photography, is my hobby).

I adore stationery. I am the owner of many notebookstha5 are "too good to write in".

When my dad married my stepmum when 8 was 15, me and my siblings bought him a silver Parker pen. Not expensive, but all that we could afford. Recently he has given it back to me, in spotless but used condition, and I use it to write in my journal (in a beautiful leather case that I was given by my sister in law especially to write in!). Dad refers to it as "Wedding Pen" as if it was a person!

LadyHelenaJustina · 27/07/2022 21:24

I think I have found my people. Thank you, OP.

I had a Parker vector when I was at school (or actually, a few of them over the years of them as I lost them / broke the lids). That's the only style of nib I could get on with, the ones that curve in to more of a point in the front always spatterered ink everywhere 😂They are cheap but write nicely, and they use long cartridges so you're not running out of ink all the time. Mine were always blue or black, but they seem to make a few other more fun colours now.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 27/07/2022 22:00

That's a lovely pen. You have beautiful writing. My writing is atrocious and I'm left handed so smudge fancy pens 😢.

Thank you. The pen is beautiful and I love writing with it ♥✒
I saw some left-handed pens on Amazon a while ago but wouldn't know if they're any good.

@weegiemum that's a lovely story. My dad gave me a Parker fountain pen set when I was 14ish but I lost it :(

@LadyHelenaJustina you're welcome; so have I!

I love a fountain pen. I blame it on one of my primary school teachers who taught us how to write with them when we learnt cursive...it all started there!

I have a stash of Watermans that I used to use at work (until everything became laptop based) but a few years ago, I treated myself to a wonderful handmade pen made from 100 year old oak burr (reclaimed of course) and jade resin. It was expensive but it's my "special pen" that I write birthday cards etc with. I only use top quality Japanese ink with it. It feels like a pampering ritual when my pen comes out. The maker has now become more successful and places like Harrods etc sell his pens. When I bought, he was just working out of his shed and pens were one-offs that sold very quickly. (I was introduced to his pens by a jewellery designer-maker I know who did a collaboration with him).

This is the closest to my pen:
