Good grief! I’ve just seen an advert for back-to- school school uniform!

Didn’t most schools in England and Wales only break up yesterday?!

When do schools in Scotland and Ireland go back?

OP posts:
AColdDuncanGoodhew · 25/07/2022 23:43

Our school (in Scotland) goes back on August 18th.

I've got most of their uniform in, just need shoes, a bag and polo shirts now, phew!

greenbirdsong · 25/07/2022 23:45

They've always done this.

I remember as a child complaining to my mum about all the "back to school" stuff in the shops the week before we broke up for summer holidays.

Where I am (SE England) today was the first day of summer hols and I've seen school stuff everywhere for the last 2 weeks.

Pinkbananas01 · 25/07/2022 23:46

Schools back 17th August in our area of Scotland, ordered uniform yesterday.
In TK Maxx with mum today & they had full display of Halloween decs!

My kids go back 3 weeks tomorrow. Uniform shopping is all complete apart from shoes which I'll get a week or two before. I like to be organised with this sort of thing, cannot stand doing it at the last minute.

Lurleene · 25/07/2022 23:52

DeusInAbsentia · 25/07/2022 22:55

That’s nothing, my local TK Maxx has all the Halloween stuff in stock and I’m absolutely loving it 😍

I was going to say this too, I was in TK Maxx at the weekend and thought they were selling off stock from last Halloween. It took a while for it to dawn in me that they were selling it for this year. Wasn't Christmas just a few weeks ago?

SecretSnake · 25/07/2022 23:53

I’m in England and mine don’t break up till tomorrow!

easyday · 25/07/2022 23:56

Private school and in their end of term 'hope you all have a lovely holiday' letter was the bill for next term. Gone up of course. Ouch.

OnaBegonia · 26/07/2022 00:27

England isn't the only country U.K. businesses advertise to 🙄
Scottish schools break up last week in June, back mid August

Wafflesnsniffles · 26/07/2022 00:30

Shops were promoting back to school uniform, stationary etc in early July in the 80s when I was a child. Its not a new thing.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/07/2022 03:24

It’s normal around here - has been for years. So depressing for the kids, I always think.

@IDreamOfTheMoors , that’s horrendous!

Almost worse than Christmas stuff in UK shops in September.

echt · 26/07/2022 03:59

Piggy backing on this. I'm in Melbourne and on walking past an opticians saw there was tinsel and some reindeer in the window. I was WTF then realised it was Christmas in July. While it's a thing here, I still don't see how it promotes sales of specs.

The big push on specs is December, to take advantage of private health discounts.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 26/07/2022 04:20

I must move to Melbourne 😂 it’s always Christmas in July for me that’s when I start shopping and on Movies 24 have all their Christmas movies on.

SE England here and yesterday was the first day of summer holidays. I’ve started school shopping as I support local school uniform shops but sadly you have to get your orders in earlier. The deadlines are end of July to ensure that it’s available and ready for September.

Lulu1919 · 26/07/2022 05:03

I've noticed in a few shops ..inc supermarkets the summer clothes are now in a smaller area as jumpers and autumn clothes and colours are appearing !!

upliftingtwisting · 26/07/2022 08:09

We go back 16/8. I bought uniform 10 days ago when marks and Spencer had their 20% off. It’s a bit like Christmas is t it. Not everyone can wait until the last minute to buy what they need. It’s called budgeting.

FrecklesMalone · 26/07/2022 08:13

I always start buying it now. I can't afford to buy three lots of uniform and shoes in one go- (mine all play football and loads of sport so need trainers which ends up being 9 pairs, at adult sizes that is pricey!).

Mol1628 · 26/07/2022 08:13

I always buy in June and July. Spreads the cost. Then I have the big shoe shopping bill for the end of August.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 26/07/2022 08:16

We have mandatory logo items which need to be bought in May to guarantee them. I noticed m&s have a discount that started last week which is too late for me, I always buy everything but shoes before the summer holidays due to having problems getting what I need if I leave it any later

Louise0701 · 26/07/2022 08:18

My Childrens school uniform takes 4 weeks to arrive from ordering. When do you plan to buy it OP?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/07/2022 08:21

I know a lot of people like to buy early to get organised or spread the cost, but there must be lots more like me who don't think of buying new summer stuff until the weather warms up. I wouldn't even set foot in a clothes shop at the moment if all they have is winter clothing.

I once tried to buy my son a new woolly hat in January because he'd lost his. Shorts, t-shirts, swimming trunks, baseball caps as far as the eye could see. I asked an assistant where I would find winter hats and she looked at me as if I had two heads. Who wants to buy winter clothing in January when it's freezing outside?!!! What sort of numpty does that? This numpty, that's who. Harrumph.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 26/07/2022 08:23

They've been advertising it for months now, and this is the first day of DS's holidays. Most of his friend's mother's have bought all their back to school stuff already while M&S were offering a discount.

But that's nothing...I was in TK Maxx the other day and they have their Halloween stuff out!

AlwaysLatte · 26/07/2022 08:23

I like to get it all early, hate scrabbling around for it at the last minute!

Jenjenn · 26/07/2022 08:47

I bought uniform last week with M&S discount as well as winter coats for dc. Dc go back 30th August but we will be away in August. It will be hectic at work when I get back so it makes sense to sort what I can early. I like to spread the cost too.

moimichme · 26/07/2022 08:48

I think my just-finished-reception dc doesn't grow as fast as most kids. Doesn't help that school logo item sizing is age 3-5 and then 6-8 (the larger size will fall off him). So I wasn't planning to buy loads of new uniform during the first term. But if it'll sell out then perhaps we ought to buy the next size up. Unless there'll be more stock in October-November.I guess there will be some, but no sales then? Hmm.

1some1 · 26/07/2022 09:00

I sell 2nd hand uniform: my sales peak in June.

Mommabear20 · 26/07/2022 09:06

The first day of school holidays used to be when my mum took us into town and got us kitted up for the next year! Gets it done and out of the way, so we can then start enjoying our holidays and no need to mention school!
