Sat in car on a campsite. Happy Holidays

Morning All, after an accident involving urine in the sleeping bag me (not guilty) and 4 year old are sat in car on a campsite in Pembrokeshire waiting for rest of family to wake up. Wish I could say it was a beautiful view watching the sea/sunrise or listening to birdsong but we’re both fed up and tired. She’ll probably fall asleep but I shall silently seethe and think of my dry, sweet smelling bed at home. It’s day 2! But no more rain. Apparently. Been here since 5:30am. Can I hear your holiday horror stories whilst I hold my own bladder and wait for a reasonable time to wake everyone else up. Thanks 😭

We were camping in Cornwall in summer last year, we'd pitched under some enormous pine trees. Cue Storm Evert, and the sound of pine cones the size of dinner plates falling like grenades all around us. I had what I can only assume was a panic attack and got the car emptied and ready for sleeping in, woke DH up at around 1am and carried 3 sleeping children into the car to sleep it out there - I was convinced one of the trees was going to come down on the tent and kill us all.
In the morning we'd lost a couple of ropes but the tent was fine, some others on the site had lost tents and awnings. The kids thought it was a great adventure!

I still have flashbacks to the morning after the visit to the PYO strawberry farm, roughly 12 years ago now.

It was about 6am and all was quiet, apart from DS quietly playing with his cars in his tent pod. All of a sudden we heard a startled "whoops", followed by the unearthly smell of shit.

DH got to shower the child, while I got to sluice out the sleeping bag and queue patiently for reception to open so that I could pay half my monthly salary for laundry tokens. I'm still not entirely sure who got the worst deal TBF.

What a weird sentence.

Made me smile too @Spudley13. Pembrokeshire is wonderful but very much at the end of the line.

We are currently stranded in Netherlands. The car is having emergency repairs in the garage. It's costing a fortune for the car, extra accommodation and a flight home for one of us that needed to get home ☹️

Not camping but a few years ago we went on an AI holiday, slightly out of season so we got a good price. On the way there, we met a family and got chatting to them, found out they'd paid about 20% less than us.

As we arrived, their daughter ran across the tiled bar area and broke her ankle; the dad then broke his tooth; and they then spent the last few days of their holiday trying to rearrange their flight (without success) to another airport in the UK, meaning they had an 8 hour drive to where they needed to go.

We felt really sorry for them!

Oooof that reminds me of the two sisters I met in Kos. The younger one had somehow got herself involved in a bar fight in town a day or two before the end of the holiday (as you do?!) and our coach was late leaving the hotel, then 2 hours on the coach, then flight delayed at the other end so sat in a hot and uncomfortable airport.

Sister spent the whole time sweating in her neck brace!

chillinwithmygnomies · 25/07/2022 12:18

Probably too late now, but there's a laundrette in Pendine and a lovely fish shop.

ReneBumsWombats · 25/07/2022 12:40

This sort of thing is why I don't camp or campervan any more. I've had enough with pretending to like it.

I need a private bathroom, solid walls and easy access to fresh sheets. At a push I'll take a static caravan in a holiday park, a private villa somewhere is fine (presumably I'll have my own washing machine or the owners will be available if there's a sheet emergency), but sleeping on the ground in Bumfuck Nowhere or in a car with fold-out beds...not any more. No fucking Airbnb either.

Silkierabbit · 25/07/2022 13:44

One thing we had is DS vomitted in the car all over his car seat and underneath became a carpet sick bowl then the Eurotunnel tanoy said have a pleasant journey.

May Bank Holiday camping on the Isle of Wight c. 2004. Woken up by the roof of the tent periodically slapping us in the face with the massive gusts of wind. Decided to decamp at 4 am before tent totally ripped away. I sat in the car in my jimjams eating Haribo whilst DP (now DH) heroically chased the tent around the field and chucked it in the car. Trying to find a cafe open early on a bank holiday to warm up was tricky. Never again.

Something to look forward to - there’s great harbourside fish and chips at The Shed in Porthgain. It’s about 7 miles from St David’s 😊

I've been there. A few years ago when it was just DS. We went for his first birthday. Me and DP feasted heartily in his honour. Thanks for reminding me. We'll definitely go back 😋

I can see why you’d avoid the chippy in St David’s but Whitesands Cafe does decent fish and chips.
Is your 15 mile away one the one in Fishguard?

Literally no idea why people go on camping holidays with small kids

what kind of holiday is it?! What do you get out of it?!

if you’re gonna stay you’re gonna needs loads of wine OP

Me and DP were having the same discussion. We're next to the beach so there is that. But it's essentially a kid's holiday. That said it is nice to be away and be outside all day. DS usually finds some kids to play with and me and DP tag team with DD (ASC). We are one day two now and the forecast says no more rain.
Next year we may go abroad. We'll start saving after this holiday Grin

Hi Op,

We've just got back from a week at pentewan sands in Cornwall with our 2 year old.

Worst camping trip I have ever had and I've been going since I was a toddler myself.

I came down with my first ever migraine at the start of the holiday that last 3 days, then I had a good day followed by food poisoning ...... I won't even go there on what that was like on a camping trip but thank god for the porta potty I just feel sorry for any one that was camping next to us at 2am in the morning 😭

@BiddyPop we had something similar coming back from SE Asia at Easter - DS2 started feeling queasy when we hit turbulence over the Alps and by the time we started our descent to Heathrow he started being sick - as we landed, taxiing to the gate, as we walked off the plane we were grabbing sick bags for him out of other seat back pockets - cleaned him up in the loo on arrivals and he was sick again, he had his face buried in a sick bag the whole time we were in the passport queue (and of course we had to wait in a giant line because kids can't go through the e-gates), as we were looking for our taxi driver - thankfully he was down to dry heaves by that point. He isn't prone to travel sickness so we were completely unprepared and it's never happened before or since - I'm just grateful it wasn't throughout the 15+ hours of flight before that!!

Ladywiddio · 25/07/2022 17:51

Back in the 1980’s,camping in Anglesey,it poured and poured,it was coming in the tent, the wind was howling. 3 kids sleeping like logs,I went to sleep in the car.I came back into the tent about 7am,my husband was standing stock still in the living area.I asked what he was doing “standing in the only place where the f***g rain isn’t coming in”said he.Still makes me laugh all these years later,he has been dead 25 years, but I have so many hilarious memories of him.

Oblomov22 · 25/07/2022 18:17

Update? Are you all sorted OP?
I totally forgot about suggesting Amazon. We've ordered bits for our caravan from Amazon before.
Hope you've eaten dinner, have clean bedding, and a nice glass of wine. Wine

FourChimneys · 25/07/2022 18:29

We were once about half an hour from Heathrow on a very bumpy flight in a storm. My sibling and I were in the seats in front of our parents. Everyone had to be strapped in, including the air hostesses. At which point I had the biggest nosebleed in the history of medicine. My mother shoved her cardigan at me to absorb the worst but the plane still looked like a murder scene.

I can remember everyone being kind as I was only young but it brought a strained look to my mother's face whenever it was mentioned afterwards. It was in the 60s and it ruined my first ever pair of flares, of which I had been very proud.

Hello You Lovely Lot,

We found a laundrette just outside St David's who cleaned sleeping bag and a few other bits for £14! A total bargain. We spent the day on the beach, picked up the laundry (and pull ups) and now I'm lounging at the campsite drinking beer, whilst DP is making dinner and the kids are quite relaxed. Moments like this remind me why I camp. But definitely considering all inclusive abroad next year! Grin
Thanks again for your supportive messages and horror stories FlowersWine. I hope it gets better for those having a difficult time xx

If it helps OP, you’ve made me jealous. I’m from St David’s but we haven’t made it back this year. That campsite is in a stunning location.

Minimalme · 25/07/2022 19:08

We camp every year and so have a lot of worst ever moments.

The two that will never leave me are camping with my sister and her posh friends in Norfolk. We arrived in our tiny car, put up our tiny tent and ds2 (then 4) walked in and vomited over everything.

The campsite laundry was locked for the night.

Next one was towing a small caravan and dh hit the gate on the way in and pulled around 15ft of fencing down.
