Whitby

Is there anything to do in Whitby/around the Whitby area for 4 nights. 2 adults and 4 children aged 14-19 coming with us. All relatively easy to please but online it doesn't look like there is much to do.
Is the Dracula experience any good? Trip advisor reviews are not very good.
Worried we are going to be very bored!

Loads of past threads if you do a search on it.

saraclara · 24/07/2022 17:57

I'm there now.

I'm not sure what you mean by "to do". We've had many family holidays here (though I'm here in my own this time) and never been bored. But it's not theme park land, and there are no water parks or BIG sights. It's about countryside and beaches, and fossil hunting, and now gentle pleasures, I suppose. My girls logged it as teenagers, but you're might not.

So it depends what you and your family want from a holiday. I've never been to the Dracula Experience, but it's unlikely to take much of your day from what I've seen from the outside.

saraclara · 24/07/2022 17:58

Logged it? Loved it.

TallulahMazda · 24/07/2022 17:58

Thanks saraclara.
What are you filling your time in with and what are your thoughts on it in general?
Hope you are having a nice holiday.

Fossil hunting.

Penny arcade.

Browse the shops.

Eat, gorgeous restaurants.

I could and have repeated those activities for a week with DD between the ages of 3 and 23.

Enjoy.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 24/07/2022 18:03

Whitby is beautiful. Walk the coastal path to Robin Hoods Bay and catch the bus back or vice versa. Walk to Sandsend. Go round the shops. Go to the stream train station that is from Harry Potter. Go round the shops. Fossil hunting. Go up the 199 steps to the Abbey. It's a beautiful place.

SeaDreaming · 24/07/2022 18:04

Boat trips, walks along to Sandsend/along the Cinder Track, a trip to the Abbey, a visit to the museum and the Hand of Glory....

shouldipayorgo · 24/07/2022 18:06

Whitby is a beautiful quaint seaside town.

On one side of the river is the new town with amusement arcades aforementioned Dracula experience crazy golf, boat rides and the other is on the other side is the old part quaint cobbled streets with shops and ice cream ms etc

The beaches are beautiful. There is the steam train and we do the rail train (drive to grosmont, train to goathland and walk back)

There is fossil hunting, the abbey, museum, micro brewery and the river esk.

There are lots of pubs and restaurants.

There is enough to do for a week if you like nice places and are content to walk and mooch about.

SeaDreaming · 24/07/2022 18:09

There's also Whitby Surf School (i think they also do paddleboarding) if that's your cup of tea.

All this and I would add you can spend a good bit of the day queuing at the Magpie Grin The Dracula Experience (unless it has changed dramatically) is more kitsch than anything else and v small.

Seriously, Whitby is a really lovely, unique place and the fish and chips are the best in the world (IMHO)

I'm basically doing the stuff that others have mentioned. Yesterday I went to Robin Hood's Bay, and as it's Steampunk weekend, when I got back I went down to the Pavilion to see their fayre and all the cosplay folks (who've been wandering around town, to the amusement of the normal tourists!).

Maybe you should bring your teenagers when it's Goth weekend!

This morning I drove to Staithes, and returned via Sandsend and then had a lovely lunch. The food options are great round here.

There are boat trips, with seal and dolphin watching. And there's a pottery painting place that mine liked.

If you want a bit more 'typical louder seaside resort' then have a day in Scarborough.

Ha! Yet a few doors down there's Quayside fish and chips, which has the best fish ever, and no queues!

Ukholidaysaregreat · 24/07/2022 18:22

Yes have tea at the Magpie. It's delightful!

I was there last year over Steampunk weekend- it was fabulous! Didn't realise it was on until i ventured out for the day and saw groups like this one ..

Enjoy!

Avoid The Magpie. The fish and chips are awful and expensive. Frozen fish would you believe in a place like Whitby. That's just unacceptable

Thinkingblonde · 24/07/2022 18:40

“ 7 things to do in Whitby”. I did a Google search and this came up. interesting night time activities you and your teens would enjoy, a sunset boat trip, the Ghost walk, Dracula Experience, there’s one I think the teens would really enjoy, Escape or Escapade,? Can’t remember exactly. It’s among the 7 mentioned in the link. Lots of pubs, eating places, I think the Magpie chippy over rated and over priced. Mr Chips is better.
Good train service to Grosmont, North Yorkshire moors railway,
Beaches are good, great for fossil hunting.
Over in the old part of town, is the Shambles, indoor shopping place, it’s small but interesting.
The Jet museum is free, it holds the biggest piece of a fossilised tree 50 million year old, might have missed a free million there.
I live in Saltburn, just a few miles up the coast ( 15), another quaint quirky seaside town.

Thinkingblonde · 24/07/2022 18:42

I love Goth Weekend. The Goths are so friendly, they pose for photos and really put the effort into the clothes.

saraclara · 24/07/2022 18:44

Oh yes, the ghost walks! My DDs loved them, and went on one again as adults last year.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 24/07/2022 18:46

Whitby is one of my happy places, especially off-season. I love settling into a window seat at the Duke pub, glass in hand, watching the sun set over the harbour. Very special.

Definitely Quayside or Mr Chips over the bridge.

Have a lovely rest of your holiday @saraclara ! We accidentally went once at Goth weekend and it was so wonderful that we went back around that time every year. Steampunk would do nicely too!

shouldipayorgo · 24/07/2022 18:49

It just has a nice vibe, don't need to be doing stuff all the time

MystikSpiral · 24/07/2022 18:51

I love Whitby for the gothic horror vibe. The abbey is great, the dracula experience is funny in a cheesy horror kind of way, we also went on the guided Dracula walk which was also good. If your teens are into all that, they will love it.

If not, then there are loads of interesting shops (not just touristy tat), lovely cafes restaurants, pubs and fish and chips, the beach, the arcades, lots of beautiful scenery and walks, and steam trains.

saraclara · 24/07/2022 18:55

Thanks @CPL593H I definitely recommend Steampunk weekend! Such a lovely atmosphere and everyone down there was so friendly and inclusive. And when I awkwardly asked people if I could take their photos, they were so lovely! It's also funny to see people reacting to then when they wander around town, especially if they don't know why they're dressed up! The double takes when they suddenly notice someone!

pimlicoanna · 24/07/2022 19:01

What about Whitby brewery next to the Abbey

lifelongfrugaleer · 24/07/2022 19:12

Crabbing off the quay next to the swing bridge, my teens love it
