Whitby

Is there anything to do in Whitby/around the Whitby area for 4 nights. 2 adults and 4 children aged 14-19 coming with us. All relatively easy to please but online it doesn't look like there is much to do.
Is the Dracula experience any good? Trip advisor reviews are not very good.
Worried we are going to be very bored!

I love Whitby. Spent a few days there a few years ago when our DC were younger and had a fab time. We didn't 'do' that much. We did a bus tour that we could get on and off including a stop at a nice park. Saw the whalebone arch. Walked up a lot of steps (to the Abbey maybe?) Pottered around the harbour and the gift shops. We had fish and chips 2 days running which is something the DC still occasionally talk about! I think we went to the Quayside one. I had a local-ish Ex many years ago who always insisted on going to the Magpie.

We also had a day trip to Scarborough and Robin Hood's Bay. At the time there was a CBBC programme set in Scarborough and the DC wanted to see some the locations.

We had gorgeous weather and it is a holiday with lovely memories.

I missed that you had older DC/teens. If they haven't already get them to read Room 13. It's set around a school trip in Whitby. All of mine had read it in school and loved spotting the locations

Goth weekend sounds fab! As does Whitby so thank you for all these recommendations. Much appreciated.

It’s a really nice place just to mooch. Fab beach.
we walked the coastal path all the way to Staithes and got the bus back after a suitable cake stop.

also did trips out to Robin hoods bay and Scarborough which has excellent too.

I loved the Abbey. Beaches are great. Flamingo land is good if you like scary rides

FollowTheRain · 24/07/2022 21:35

My in laws live in Whitby so I spend a lot of time there. Magpie is good but not worth waiting for, Trenchers is amazing and Quayside is fab. My favourite is Silver Street which is hidden away a little.
Its pretty limited for teens tbh, the arcade is fun and my teen enjoys the boat rides.
5 mins drive to Sandsend, which is a gorgeous beach with some lovely walks up over the cliffs

motherofawhirlwind · 24/07/2022 21:38

Fish and chips - Trenchers is best, Royal Fisheries a close second.

We go to the beach (we prefer Sandsend), mooch around the East Side shops, visit the Abbey and the museum next door, the church too.

Further afield - you've got Goathland (Heartbeat and Hogsmeade Station), Pickering Castle, Falling Foss, there's row boats or canoeing at Ruswarp, visit Staithes, the Moors Centre at Danby, Beacon Farm ice cream parlour.

Check out the lucky duck shop. We have all bought them over the years and they keep disappearing!

If you are thinking of a trip to Scarborough the open or water park has been very busy lately so you need to prebook.

I’m just up the coast so I’ve never actually stayed over to do any of the ghost walks but that might be fun with teens?

If you're self catering (even if you're not) Fortunes smokehouse in Henrietta Street (close to the199 steps) is like going back in time and wonderful kippers. Also highly recommend Botham's bakery in Skinner St (West side)

Really enjoying the Whitby love on this thread, it is such a special place and stays with you forever Grin

I'm off to Bothams in the morning before I set off for home. Got to have favourite treats to take home for the family. And lemon buns for me!

Good call on Botham's - their Whitby lemon buns are cakes of the gods!

CPL593H · 24/07/2022 23:00

I discovered this year that Botham's have an online shop. All sorts of hampers and... lemon buns....

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 25/07/2022 04:21

There's a "proper" water park called Alphamere in Scarborough, just down the road from Whitby. Scarborough has more beach, and is a good day out, and I think the open air theatre has a full programme of events this year, if you see what's on when you could catch a show.

Huntswomanonthemove · 25/07/2022 04:34

The steam train trip is a lovely day out. It goes through the North Yorkshire moors and stops at a few nice places, finishing at Pickering. We loved it. We also did a boat trip.

www.ncbp.co.uk/ Is definitely worth a visit. We ❤️ Whitby.

carefullycourageous · 25/07/2022 06:14

The abbey is a decent place to visit. A walk along the Cinder Path. Lots of other nice beaches nearby. Steam train trip to Pickering. Bus trip to York. Drive to Middlesbrough for modern art. Boat trip.

motherofawhirlwind · 25/07/2022 09:10

Bothams fans - also check your local farm shops. A couple here stock the biscuits and cakes, but not the lemon buns, sorry. But still, they keep me going in between emergency parcels from my family and trips up!

SeaDreaming · 25/07/2022 20:24

I think our local co-op (West Yorks) does a few Bothams cakes, but not the lemon buns.

I'm off to Whitby next month, so will stock up then 👍

saraclara · 25/07/2022 22:15

I just got back home. And had one of the four lemon buns that I brought home, for supper. Buttered, and with the top half then inverted to make a lemon icing sandwich. Lush.
