What would you do if you won the lottery (apart from the usual)

Aside from buying a house fancy holiday etc, I'd love to go on sites like just giving and donate money for people to reach their targets
I also love random acts of kindness
Reading an article and the person that won the 190 euromillons and thinking what I could do with all that money

I would buy houses to rent very cheap to local people to give them a chance to save, I live in an area where so many people have been made homeless due to air bnb

I would reinstate youth clubs and summer play schools... when I was young, if a child wanted to play football they would join a local team and that was it. These days even the most simple of things like sport is a cost and it prices out a lot of kids. These days there are weekly subscriptions, expensive sports/team kits, tournament entry fees etc etc. It's sad seeing kids being priced out due to poverty for things that once upon a time used to be so simple and accessible for all. It saddens me that there are children in the U.K. who have never seen a beach, swimming pool, rode a bus, been out for a meal, to the cinema or even left their home town etc.

I would donate a huge amount to University hardship funds.

And maybe find some single parents who are really struggling financially and pay for childcare for them so they can work.

YorkieTheRabbit · 24/07/2022 13:53

I’d fully fund Millington’s Magical Barn animal sanctuary.

sleepymum50 · 24/07/2022 14:40

Cat sanctuary where I can pay the staff and not have volunteers.

Refuge for women

stayathomer · 24/07/2022 14:45

I have some relatives to help, 2 girls in work I’d buy houses for, and I’d love to give kids around Ireland the opportunity to do lessons in swimming (we couldn’t afford for our children to learn) and another hobby. Plus insulate and fix up people’s houses (I know-I’m talking Euromillions here!!!)

I'd do something that would help my niece who is very autistic (pretty much non verbal, will never live independently). She will eventually end up in residential care, and I'd do something (what I don't know) to ensure that she is always well looked after, and to help other ND people in a similar position. That would take up millions.
I'd gift a house I rent to a friend who has become increasingly disabled.
I'd set up a couple other people that have really helped me through the years. Seed money for a business, that sort of thing.
I'd tell a very dear friend, who has talked of leaving her husband since I met her but is terrified of how she would cope financially, that she doesn't need to worry I'll give her enough for her to maintain her lifestyle.
Plus of course buy my kids nice homes, set up trust funds for them/their kids (none yet), give a fair chunk to my sisters.
Take a bunch of friends off for a really nice holiday.
Move in to my dream home in Chelsea!

There's lots of things I'd love to do but would depend on how much we won.
But some ideas would be:

  • renovate our local hospitals maternity wards. I've had both my children there in the last few years and will be having my third there at the end of this year, and while we had an amazing experience with all the staff we encountered, they were clearly struggling with old and outdated equipment.
  • start a charity to help people get off the streets and back into mainstream society.
  • work on developing and producing several product ideas I have but don't have the means to do it at the moment.
Lightning020 · 24/07/2022 15:38

I would give up work pronto. Never work again. I would buy ds a property and see a financial adviser to maximise my income for life. Go hiking weekly finish off decorating my house then work one morning weekly at a local charity shop to give something back to society. Utter bliss lol.

I would sit with people who were dying and had no family so they didn't die alone. Also volunteer visiting.

You can do that without the millions!

Greebosmum · 24/07/2022 15:59

I would buy a van and set up a mobile tea room for 1940s events, but would only sell snacks and cakes as they were available in those days with the restrictions of rationing etc. My friend and I have often discussed this.

All our children would be given money for a house and a million pounds but would be expected to survive on that.

Money put by for the grandchildren.

I would buy a 1930s house and restore it to 1930s condition, then live in it as they would have done in those days.

Any left over would either be given to Women's Aid, or, if enough, to build houses to be rented out at sensible cost.

I was in Cornwall last year and saw lots of run-down homes for sale. I have a mini-dream of buying the lot, renovating them to a good standard and then selling half at a reasonable cost to young people from the local community and running half as halfway houses for women and children escaping abuse.

When the half you sell at low prices to local young people the. Go straight back on the market at full value, what do you think ?

This is the kind of thorny problem that my new solicitor would advise me on. I imagine some sort of restrictive covenant saying the houses can only be sold to live in, not as second homes, and the price can't rise by more than x% every z number of years.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 24/07/2022 20:37

Buy some new instruments for the music department at DDs school including a harpsichord.

TheCanyon · 24/07/2022 20:38

Id plonk myself at the best private neuro hospital and not move until I'm fixed.

WillitFit · 24/07/2022 20:42

Nothing.

I don't play the lottery, but I can't think of anything I'd change with a big win. I'm fortunate in that I'm not wealthy , but I am comfortable and have everything I need/want.

It seems to me that a very large sudden windfall would be a bit of a headache.

It would however mean lots of choices. I.e. I don't want to give up work, but knowing that I could if I wanted to, would be nice. Until now I've found the NHS OK for what I've needed, but with the horror stories, it would be nice to know I could pay for private care for loved ones if necessary etc.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 24/07/2022 20:42

@Greebosmum i would also set up a traditional English tearoom. It would have a gigantic wooden trolley loaded with cakes which would be wheeled to your table for your perusal by a waitress in a black dress, white pinny and a lacy cap. They would call everyone Madam and Sir.
there would be bread and butter with sandwich spread, anchovy paste and those sorts of toppings. Pikelets.. seed cake.. macaroons (English style).. chocolate eclairs with whipped cream..

it is based on an old fashioned tea room in Alfriston, East Sussex that we used to go to in my youth.

KittenKong · 24/07/2022 20:43

Spite list for revenge. I keep telling DH that there may not be much left as it’s by it’s getting longer by the day

JePréfèreLesChiens · 24/07/2022 20:47

Set up an animal sanctuary here. And help animals that need it in other countries.

We have plans to have our own sanctuary in a few years once our kids are through Uni but we could do it sooner and do more with a big lottery win.

I don’t think there’s much else I’d want to do, I just love animals.

BadDragon · 24/07/2022 20:50

I'd like to buy somewhere with a big garden or some land, and grow loads of fruit and vegetables, and keep chickens for their eggs.
I'd get the chickens from an organisation called Fresh Start For Hens, they rescue hens from the egg laying industry from being slaughtered once they are no longer at the optimum egg laying age for commercial selling.
I'd plant all kinds of fruit and veg, not just to cover my household's needs, but so I can donate to local food banks and share with family and friends too!
Of course, the chickens would be treated to premium home grown produce as well as scraps, treats and supplements too!
Even if they stop laying, I'd keep them as pets so they could live out what's left of their lives in comfort :)
