Hotels and packed lunch - help

I need help

I will be travelling to the south coast soon to take my DS to a 2 day activity and need to take/provide a packed lunch for both days

I can't be bothered to do the drive both days - 2.5 hour drive, so am thinking we will stay over 1 night

I was thinking about a premier Inn- but they don't provide fridges so I can't freeze an ice block for a packed lunch the next day

It will be a warm day so an ice block will be preferable I think

What are my options?

I can't think of any

And I can't risk warm soggy heat ridden stomach bug inducing sandwiches

Please help

Oh and day 2 will be a really early start so probably little time to do a supermarket dash, so ideally best to prepare a packed lunch the night before

I'm doomed aren't I

Pack snacks and go and buy a sandwich in sainsburys each morning

Is there a shop nearby? You could buy a sandwich, fruit & drink before his day starts.

womaninatightspot · 23/07/2022 22:00

Honestly I’d just choose stuff for the second day that doesn’t need to be refrigerated. Bananas, pancakes, flapjacks, rice cakes. Tinned tuna pasta salad is quite nice.

Mangledrake · 23/07/2022 22:00

Shop locally for bread-roll and deli meat / cheese - prepacked sandwich
Bring lunch food that doesn't need refrigeration - crackers / babybel / cereal bars / fruit / peanut butter / marmite / packaged rolls / tinned tuna etc
Have buffet breakfast at premier Inn and pack bacon sandwiches or suchlike

MusicForASushiRestaurant · 23/07/2022 22:00

It's keeping it cool through the morning that is the worry though - especially in the current weather!

Depends how early early is.

If its before the shops open garage may be open with food.

MaChienEstUnDick · 23/07/2022 22:02

Honestly, you're overthinking this. Get it in the morning from supermarket/garage whatever and put it in an insulated bag. It will be fine.

Soggycrisps · 23/07/2022 22:02

I think the only option is buying it in the morning.

ChateauMargaux · 23/07/2022 22:02

I know MN detest those thieving people who make a packed lunch from the breakfast buffet so I absolutely would not suggest that!!

hedgehoglurker · 23/07/2022 22:02

Cool box with big bag of ice from supermarket/ petrol station. Hard to plan for certain though.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 23/07/2022 22:03

Those John west tuna lunches are ok. Just remember a fork. We take them for days out. No need for a fridge.

Sherrystrull · 23/07/2022 22:03

We take stuff that doesn't need to be put in the fridge, packaged pain au chocolat or brioche, cereal bars, cheese biscuits, fruit etc.

It's keeping it cool through the morning that is the worry though - especially in the current weather!

Then I'd just avoid spreads / eggs / dressings - bread roll with hard cheese, apple, flapjack would be fine, for example

Itsthelookitsthelook · 23/07/2022 22:04

Easy peasy, just things that don't need a fridge. Apples, bananas, satsumas, peanut butter sandwiches or on crackers. Peperami. Fruit snacks like Bear Yoyos etc. Cereal bars, crisps, nuts, dried fruit. Pots of fruit in juice, pots of jelly or custard. Dry cereal such as cheerios.

womaninatightspot · 23/07/2022 22:05

If there is a bar attached to the hotel you could probably get some ice, bring a bag for life and pop drinks etc in so they are ice cold in the morning.

bluechameleon · 23/07/2022 22:05

For the second day pack stuff that doesn't need to be in the fridge: crackers/ breadsticks/bread roll, satsumas/banana/apple, cherry tomatoes/carrot, mini custard/jelly/rice pudding, cereal bar/ biscuits/cake bar/malt loaf, crisps/mini cheddars/popcorn.

Mrsjayy · 23/07/2022 22:06

Buy an isolated lunch box supermarket lunch job done you are over thinking

Mally100 · 23/07/2022 22:07

Take non fridge items and fruit in a cooler bag. Get Sandwiches early in the morning.

Ollybob · 23/07/2022 22:09

Take a cool box/bag from home and use as a fridge, make lunch in morning like you would at home, frozen water bottles keep stuff cool for a couple of days.
Not ice as it melts so much quicker than bigger blocks of ice and makes everything soggy!
I've used a 2 litre frozen bottle of water in a cool bag when camping it lasts over 48 hours

RomainingCalm · 23/07/2022 22:10

Take a cool box. The night before you leave fill it with either ice or 2l drinks bottles filled with water that you've frozen beforehand so that it's really cold when you fill it.

Freeze some cartons of drink that can act as additional ice packs.

Sandwiches/fruit should be fine like this for 48hrs. Choose something like cheese or tinned tuna for fillings rather than chicken or prawns.

SeaToSki · 23/07/2022 22:10

If you have a really good quality insulated bag then everything should last. Replace the ice block with some bagged frozen peas or random frozen item you can find at a local shop on the first night on the way to the premier inn

RomainingCalm · 23/07/2022 22:11

Great minds @Ollybob 😀

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 23/07/2022 22:12

Just buy a meal deal each from the local shop. If you're worried about food poisoning don't be, we all had chicken or ham sandwiches packed by our mums in the morning and left in a warm classroom and they were fine at lunch. You could always just buy plain cheese sandwiches if it really bothers you.
