Hotels and packed lunch - help

I need help

I will be travelling to the south coast soon to take my DS to a 2 day activity and need to take/provide a packed lunch for both days

I can't be bothered to do the drive both days - 2.5 hour drive, so am thinking we will stay over 1 night

I was thinking about a premier Inn- but they don't provide fridges so I can't freeze an ice block for a packed lunch the next day

It will be a warm day so an ice block will be preferable I think

What are my options?

You are all right, I'm over thinking it.

I'll have all day whilst he's at the activity on day 1 to shop and sort food for day 2 lunch.

I had a nasty bout of food poisoning from a packed lunch once which was left too long and not cooled which is why I'm worrying and I feel really uncomfortable not having an iceblock

Small sandwich box filled with something frozen chucked in with the sandwiches from a shop? Or just bread Co and cheese and fruit ploughman’s should work.

Just get stuff that doesn't to be cool. Apple, crisps, roll with peanut butter or jam, flapjack. You can bring all that stuff with you.

Cool pack with sandwich for 1st day.
2nd day brioche or large pretzel, banana, crisps

Pick a filling that won't give you food poisoning if not chilled correctly. Jam, cheddar / other hard cheese etc.
Or don't have a sandwich. You can buy mini packs of those crackers (? Tuc) that have a nasty processed cheese spread in them already. They can be kept at room temp.

As a pp said you could get ice from the bar put your food on ice also tin foil is. Better than cling film for keeping things fresh,

If you have two cool boxes, pack one for day 2 and don't open it til then and it will stay cool enough, especially if you have a few frozen items in (yogurt pouches, drinks cartons for example.)

But easier imo is things that don't need fridge for day 2.

Mrsjayy · 23/07/2022 22:27

As long as you wrap it tight enough,

ninjafoodienovice · 23/07/2022 22:31

So I've just been at a premier inn and they did pastries for breakfast, you could toast a bagel and add nutella and they have fruit like bananas and nice yeo valley yoghurts, top up the water bottle with chilled water or there are vending machines with cold drinks etc so you could very easily make up a packed lunch from the breakfast. If you order a full English for an adult (£10.50) then a child eats free too so they could have breakfast and lunch for free!!

See if anyone you know has a plug in cool box

ColmanFlamingo · 23/07/2022 22:33

Have you got a friend who has a camping fridge you can borrow?

But really the advice above is good.
In all honesty in this case I'd ask the hotel if you could pop a tiny ice pack in the freezer overnight though.

Also those thermos pots might be useful, you could make up noodles with boiling water and they'd keep hot. Then fruit, crackers and choc or granola bar to go with it would be fine.
Or use them to keep something cold?

declutteringmymind · 23/07/2022 22:37

Just swing by any supermarket and get a meal deal.

toomuchlaundry · 23/07/2022 22:38

Check out DofE expedition advice for lunches as they must be food items that don’t need refrigerating

ShakespearesSisters · 23/07/2022 22:40

We have just done a couple of nights in a Premier Inn. My daughter is on antibiotics which need to be kept cold. They did freeze my ice packs for me overnight. Put them in a bag with my name and room number. They were very helpful. They might do it for packed lunch, otherwise just say you need them ro keep antibiotics cold.

Take bread and a jar of peanut butter separately, and make sandwich on the morning (check for allergy at activity).

Individually wrapped supermarket waffles instead, bit sugary but it's one day.

Get the breakfast buffet and pocket bread and ham from the continental section.

Take a food flask and some just add water pasta stuff (there's usually a kettle)

Take wraps, tomato sauce & couple of sealed babybell. The wax should keep the alright out of the fridge, and you can make pizza wraps.

Peanut butter would most definitely be banned so that is a bad suggestion.

If you have a cool box, take that and freeze a couple of big bottles to go in it.
They work better if you cool the box first so I normally put a couple in the night before and then pack it.
You could freeze the sandwiches too. I tend to pack cheese or things less likely to go off. I wouldn't be having prawns for example!

Apparently, all "premier plus" rooms in Premier Inns have mini fridges.
