Things that you no longer do/miss because of the internet

Mine is cookbooks.
And when I looked up Mary Berry's plumb crumble recipe this evening I realised what a pleasure it is to cook looking at a cookbook instead of a screen!!

I also still bring 10 books on holiday to my DH frustration instead of a kindle

Waking up in the middle of the night shouting out a random actors name who was in that thing with the other bloke who you were watching earlier because you googled it.

Malariahilaria · 23/07/2022 21:28

Get lost or row with drivers about directions. Google maps is pretty good these days. Holidays are much easier now I can find the local supermarket or parking in 5 secs.

Going to Blockbusters to rent a video

Read magazines. I used to love a Thursday when all the new issues came out Take A Break etc. I don't read magazines online but I'm always on social media, mumsnet, tik tok etc instead.

HumunaHey · 23/07/2022 21:52

Manually looking for jobs, going into cafes, restaurants, etc. with my CV to enquire whether they even had any vacancies in the first place. It's an age thing too, not just the internet. Either way, I don't miss it.

Thecrystalempire · 23/07/2022 21:53

Making a twat of myself drunk and it not being posted on social media 🤣🤣🤣

Whataboutno · 23/07/2022 21:54

Call people on the phone! I would love to but no one answers anymore unless they are over 60 or my partner!

Whataboutno · 23/07/2022 21:55

I'm with you on the Kindle, books are one thing that the internet can never replace for me, so at least there is something!

Chestnut29 · 23/07/2022 22:03

Argos catalogue!

Going into the university library as a student and spending the afternoon photocopying journal articles. I loved the library, and the smell in what was called ‘the stacks’ where rows and rows of journals were stored. They’re all online now. How I miss it.

Being on the other side of the world to friends and family and actually feeling like it was the other side of the world. I went traveling at 18 in 2001; there was no social media, going on the internet meant paying for half an hour's use in an internet café (or occasionally a ten minute free use per day in a hostel) and sending a few emails home. Occasionally I'd send airmail letters home or get them from friends back home, and I'd buy a prepaid international phone card every so often to call home (usually when I moved countries, to let my parents know where I was). No mobile with me - I left my pay as you go one at home as there was no point taking it abroad for a year, it would have cost a fortune. Relied on guidebooks and good luck, rarely booked anything in advance, would get on a coach or train or bus to the next place not knowing where I'd be sleeping that night but it always turned out alright.

It felt wonderfully free and independent and adventurous, and none of it was curated for Instagram or instantly broadcast back home for people to like. I feel sad that my kids won't have that opportunity.

Going to a high street travel agent and picking up holiday brochures.

easyday · 23/07/2022 22:15

Shop. I do most of it online and feel bad that I contribute to the death of the high street.
However I went to Westfield (initially just to park as was going to the old television centre) but it was jammed packed! I thought wow there's hope! And my daughter and I quite enjoyed going round and trying on stuff. Makes me remember how fun it is to walk around actual shops and the buzz of a busy street.
