Has anyone got one? Are they worth it?
I've been looking but very confused what the different ones are.

A cheap plastic one is fine. Don't put the bottles in the dishwasher!

Eve · 23/07/2022 16:46

We have the drinkmate and use it daily.

don’t think it’s any cheaper than Aldi sparking water but much more convenient and much less waste.

ChagSameachDoreen · 23/07/2022 16:48

They're bloody brilliant. Highly recommend.

Have had the basic one for about 8 years, just take the old canister to the local hardware shop which sells the gas. It probably stays fizzy about a day but it’s always drunk long before that. I just mix the fizzy water with some elderflower cordial or similar.

This is mine OP.

We have one with the glass bottles. They look ok on the table and DH much more likely to remember to drink sparkling water. We have a filter tap and a 'sparkle' plan so that new canisters arrive when we send back the old empty ones.

DH started not recycling the empty gas canisters which really did work out expensive, you pay a returnable £10 deposit on the canister.

Lykia · 23/07/2022 17:02

We have one. They're always on offer on the Soda Stream website as a bundle.

If you happen to be in Lidl at the right time you can pick one up for about £30.

I use mine just for sparkling water and will add cordial if I want fizzy squash.

I don't recommend any of the SS syrups, Normal cordial is much better.

Has anyone tried making their wine fizzy one? Grin

World this be ok then?

Following with interest as I have been considering one recently

Dotcheck · 23/07/2022 17:37

I use mine daily.

I’m interested in the CO2 rearguard refills?

I think it works out pretty even cost wise ( discount water v soda stream) but the plastic/inconvenience of buying water makes soda stream a much better option

ConfusedGin · 13/08/2022 22:54

@NCTDN Not sure if you got that model but I just gave in and bought one! There's a limited time offer on their website - £80 for the Spirit model, 4 bottles, gas and some flavours.

OnlyTheBravest · 14/08/2022 00:21

Love my sodastream but I only use it for sparkling water. I get the cannisters on the website delivered to my home and return empties via a a nearby collect + store.

There are some fab deals on the official sodastream website. Go for the one with the most bottles.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/08/2022 05:30

They're probably worth it if you buy a lot of sparkling water, or other pop/mixers but you have to remember that the machine uses resources to make, plus delivery of the cartridges, so if you only get sparkling water every so often and not several times a week or more, then it's probably not really an environmental saving and certainly not a cost saving.

Londonnight · 14/08/2022 06:28

I love my Sodastream. I only use it for sparkling water. It has cut down the plastic waste of buying bottles. Buy two refills so that you always have one to use when one runs out. The refills can be expensive, but for me they last around 5/6 months.
Never buy the syrups. I made this mistake once, they are incredibly sweet and not very pleasant.

stuntbubbles · 14/08/2022 06:35

We have one and have the dishwasher bottles, which makes it less irritating. Ours is plug-in. It annoys the tits off me but that’s largely because DP is a complete addict with it and won’t just drink tap water, so is forever in the kitchen – where I work, wfh – filling and refilling and FFTTTZZZ FFFTTTZZZ FFFTTTZZZ (SodaStream noise) and refilling the canister and taking up cupboard space with the canister. And bloody talking about the canisters! He also bought the black one and it looks like a fucking dalek squatting on my counter. Bring back the plastic waste, I say!

DangerouslyBored · 14/08/2022 06:52

We love ours but I wouldn’t use it without filtered water, it would taste gross. Get through loads. Don’t save money but couldn’t live with the plastic bottle wastage. The glass bottles are a bit shit and overpriced. The fizzy water produced is really nice.

Handsnotwands · 14/08/2022 08:01

I love love love mine. So much so I bought an aarke because it’s prettier but I don’t think it’s as good. Less fizz, uses more gas and is a bit temperamental

go with basic cheapest soda steam would be my advice

Handsnotwands · 14/08/2022 08:02

v interested in refilling own canisters, where do you get a giant co2?

avocadotofu · 14/08/2022 08:03

I have one and only use it for sparking water. I really like it.

Weenurse · 14/08/2022 08:12

Missing the point completely….
Those of you who drink a lot of sparkling water, watch out for kidney stones please.

RoseZinfandel · 14/08/2022 08:22

We love ours and use it daily - we get through at least two bottles a day.

We find the gas canister lasts about 3 months of daily use, so only about £5 a month - a lot less than we spent on sparkling water, and much less plastic waste.

The trick to not wasting CO2 is to make sure the water is pre chilled before fizzing - warmer water will take more CO2 to make it sparkle. We always keep a bottle in the fridge waiting to be fizzed.

We have a shop locally where you can exchange the gas canister for a refilled one.

I’ve never bought the syrups.

Dc like to add fizzy water to fruit juice, so it’s saved money there too as the juice cartons last a bit longer!

MollyRover · 14/08/2022 08:22

@Weenurse , not drinking enough water is much more likely to cause kidney stones

Weenurse · 14/08/2022 08:51

@MollyRover
You are right , that not drinking enough water can cause stones, but the carbonation in fizzy water and drinks can contribute to stone formation. (So my urologist tells me)

MollyRover · 14/08/2022 09:04

@Weenurse I'd ask them where that information came from. Studies as recent as 2016 say otherwise, as far as I can find.

ehb102 · 14/08/2022 10:03

Soda stream works out about 25p a litre if you use the £10 a cannister subscription options. I'm remembering numbers so forgive any inaccuracy.

I'd much rather have three or four 2l.bottles of fizzy water in the fridge, but the price has rocketed.

I now do a.mix, Aldi water when I can get there and soda stream refilled from a CO2 cannister otherwise.
