I hate this and variations thereof! You are not Jane Austen.
I see it too often on here and in certain tabloids which we all read even if we don't admit it.

I was wondering where this came from. It is a bit weird. Assuming people are copying something I haven’t heard of 🤷‍♀️

ChinBristles · 22/07/2022 19:56

It's from Jane Eyre.

It was actually written by one of the various Brontes. Not Jane Austen. But you catch my drift.

But it's a good line?

Onceuponatimethen · 22/07/2022 21:54

It’s great copy.

I like it - original and variants.

AnneLovesGilbert · 22/07/2022 21:56

What’s wrong with it? I read it recently in a book I liked and it made me smile.

At the time it was probably quite subversive and I like the echoes of that. She married him, she made that choice.

ChinBristles · 22/07/2022 21:56

It was a good line the first time. Then ok the 5 million times after that.
Now it can fuck off.

I quite like it.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 22/07/2022 21:58

I love this quote.

I agree. I don’t get why people copy it so much. It seems to have been trotted out a lot on here recently for some reason.

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/07/2022 22:02

I like it.

It isn't "And they lived happily ever after". It's real and uncertain.

girlmom21 · 22/07/2022 22:03

It often makes me smile 🤷‍♀️

BunnyChowLover · 22/07/2022 22:03

Does anyone remember the story of a couple who met on Twitter or something, he was in some literary career and she tweeted that she would marry him and she did?

Now THAT was a clever use of ‘dear reader, I married him’

swishyskirt · 22/07/2022 22:04

One that I read recently which did make me laugh was "that man from my wedding" jn reference to her husband 😂🤣

For those still wondering, it's from Jane Eyre and the "one of the various Brontes" who wrote it was Charlotte. If you haven't already read it, do - it's not remotely soppy and is a truly great book.

It really is. Splendid bit of work.

CuriousCatfish · 22/07/2022 22:17

It makes me cringe.

I can imagine the person writing it thinking they are oh so clever.

milkshake05 · 22/07/2022 22:18

I love love love the brontes and Jane Austen. My daughters name is Georgiana 😀

ChinBristles · 22/07/2022 22:20

Yes, when I was being taught creative writing, rule 1 was not to use cliches! And this is one of them. In fact, is it plagiarism?!

Imho Jane Eyre isn't a patch on Wuthering Heights. Written by Emily Bronte, who was the best Bronte!

I absolutely love the Brontes and all things related. WH is my absolute favourite ever novel. Anne is very underrated - Agnes Grey is fantastic.

AhaLyn · 22/07/2022 22:28

Your post doesn’t really make sense as it’s not Jane Austen.

Queenoftheashes · 22/07/2022 22:30

I prefer the first sentence of Jane Eyre; it’s more relatable I think.

“Reader, I married him” is overused but less annoying than attributing it to Jane Austen

Lomex · 22/07/2022 22:34

Oh get over yourself, it's no different to any other figure of speech. It's just a nice turn of phrase. Of course it's not plagiarism, for one thing it's just one line, and for another, Jane Eyre went out of copyright a long time ago and is a public domain piece of writing.

StClare101 · 22/07/2022 22:35

It was in a book I read a couple of years ago and was really out of place. I thought it an odd decision!
