If you had £5k to spend on a small car

What would you buy?

it needs to have 5 seats and a boot and preferably as new as possible and needs to be insurance for a young driver.

Any ideas appreciated, thanks.

I bought an 18 month old pimped out clio about 7 years ago for £8k and it's been fantastic for me. Boot is massive for the cars size. In fact, it's served us better than DP's A5. I'd probably get another.

I got a 2016 Hyundai i10 for just over 5k two years ago and it's been amazing. Never had a fault, sailed through both its' MOT's. All I've had to do to it is replace a tire when I got a puncture after driving over a nail.

It has five seats and a decent size boot, air conditioning and USB connectivity and standard. I love it. I've also had a Hyundai Getz in the past - equally as reliable but a bit smaller and cheaper - mine was about 3k.

I had a 2015 Hyundai I20 and it was a fabulous car. Meets all your requirements and never gave a single bit of trouble. Best car very!

Hyundai i10. Just bought
My second. Fab little cars and cheap to run. Great fun to drive!

Toddlerteaplease · 22/07/2022 17:28

Had my old one for eight years and apart from
New tyres and a new alternator. It needed nothing else.

tootwototrue · 22/07/2022 17:30

Ford Focus

VW polo or golf.

Reliable, sturdy and maintain value

RandomMess · 22/07/2022 17:38

Look at the website Honest John - you can put in your criteria and every car is ranked 1-4 and why. There are notes on all the different older models etc.

The smaller Skodas have good reviews and not too costly you wouldn't get much VW for £5k!

Shakeitshakeitbaby · 22/07/2022 17:39

Hyundai i10, great small car.

blackteaplease · 22/07/2022 17:42

Second hand car prices are quite high at the moment. We got a VW polo last October for £5k.

I think at that end of the market, makes and models matter less than history and condition. So I’d set some basic parameters — five doors, petrol engine, not sporty, ULEZ compliant — and see what comes up. You want the car that has the best (ie most comprehensive) history for servicing and MOT, good mileage and best condition for bodywork, engine, interior and so on.

MrsMigginsCat · 22/07/2022 18:40

I have a red Suzuki Swift 1.0l turbo. I love her and feel like a girl racer when I'm driving. She's nippy, compact and does 50 to the gallon.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 22/07/2022 18:46

For a new/young driver I’d be looking at anything with a tiny engine. Cheaper all round.

For me, I’d go for another Ford Fiesta. I like mine a lot but it’s a 2L engine which would cost a fortune if I was a new driver. It’s not new but I’m not bothered by that.

Mustardbay · 22/07/2022 18:50

I loved my hyundai until a deer killed it, I would get a i20 or 30 if I could find one for under 40k miles

Mustardbay · 22/07/2022 18:50

Oh for a young driver an i20

Ducky88 · 22/07/2022 18:56

Kia picanto or Rio. If you get approved used you get 7 year warranty on it too.

BreadmanAndCake · 22/07/2022 19:09

Nissan Micra, was my first car many moons ago and I had a newer model in 2015 which was great. Efficient, reliable and surprisingly roomy. I think I paid £4.5k and it was 4 years old with 30k miles.

clopper · 22/07/2022 19:28

Another vote for Hyundai i10. DD very happy driving it, cheap to run and insure and great to park.

oodledoodle · 22/07/2022 20:03

I’m looking for a new car at the moment and the prices are really high. I am open to make but want an auto. Can’t get anything decent for less than about £7 k and I’m not fussy. Sellers are wanting £6k for a 10-12 year old car.

ISeeTheLight · 22/07/2022 20:07

A Ford Fiesta or Focus, or a Skoda Fabia.

WhackingPhoenix · 22/07/2022 20:07

Suzuki Alto. I love it so much I bought an identical one when my previous one got written off after an accident.

Zero road tax, cheap to insure, good on fuel, nothing has ever gone wrong mechanically with either of the Altos I’ve had.

Any Japanese car though, really. Steer clear of French pieces of shit (I’ve had two and both were terrible!)
