Do people not get it- UK heatwave

Scorpio8 · 20/07/2022 08:28

Sick of hearing it's summer here but it's a bit different when here in UK they not prepared for it. At the extreme heat we had past two days here forgot about experiencing in other countries. It tells your about the train tracks and tarmac in the airport's in articles in papers online.

Like when we got snow and they were not prepared. Everything closed.
It's all about them being prepared and spending the money

We are not other countries where they prepare for extreme heat or wild fires. People have lost the houses.

We were warned that these two days would. Whatever decision people make it's up to them. I actually couldn't care as you either be sensible or stupid when something arises in this country covid or Uk heatwave or any other diseases.

I think we all should know by now here in UK they really are slow to reacting to things. This government not governments in different countries.

I know I could get a huge backlash from my post but I don't actually care. I just putting it out there.

It's all about Climate change and people saying turn of the news really.

These days let people do as they please and whatever happens is down to them.

I don’t understand the point of this post. I am thoroughly tired of people pontificating about this heat wave all over this site.

Wish I had a £1 for every post like this over the last few days..

I think you've been using Google translate. It's a bit hard to follow your point.

But you're right in that countries used to this heat will know how to deal with it, from how they build their houses to understanding how to hydrate, keep cool, what is wise/ unwise to do etc because people have been educated for generations.

Currently the media is having a field day with the heatwave because it's different she therefore interesting. Everything different gets airtime! So they'll look for the sob stories or interesting views (climate change vs deniers) etc.

I wouldn't pay it too much attention or you will live miserably!

Maybe you should have joined a thread already on here about it, there are several.

Skinnermarink · 20/07/2022 08:43

Im not really sure what your point is, it’s a bit jumbled. Yes we are ill prepared for extreme weather but it’s not a quick fix.

howshouldibehave · 20/07/2022 08:48

Do you seriously think you are the first person to make a point about the weather this week or something?!

Hbh17 · 20/07/2022 08:52

What on earth do you expect the Government to do about it? I assume that is who you mean by "them" and "they". Sensible adaptations are up to individuals - it's so tedious when people take no responsibility and expect the Government to fix everything..... with our (ie taxpayers') money.

I don't know how many created posts like this here. Just having a rant because I was told not to watch the news. It's summer blah blah get on with it.. It's this UK government needs to fix up that's the issue. Roads, train tracks need to be build for it.
Like I said weather people listened to the warning or they didn't it was up to them. I don't have the sympathy for people who get sick from heat by not listening. My child come from school ill. Well you sent your child knowing how it was going to be.
A lot of common sense out the window these days.

And that never happens in “other countries”?

It does but we are not prepared pretty simply why the panic. Otherwise we just get on with it.

I haven’t seen as much hysteria and individual posts on mumsnet since the early days of Covid.

Scorpio8 · 20/07/2022 09:24

People complaining schools and just saw a funfair was shut. Especially if they concerned with the welfare of pupils or people.
I see a mum complaining her kids school were doing out door activities in a newspaper article.
Most people do make sensible decisions but don't care for the ones who don't no more.

@MerryMarigold
So glad you said that (google translate) felt like I was trying to read the first post upside down/back to front. I actually tilted my head!
And yea OP we get it, our country doesn't prepare for anything, we just roll with it. Look after you and yours I'd say, that's all I do

Zilla1 · 20/07/2022 09:52

Well everything has costs and benefits. In a country with guaranteed deep snow or extreme heat then the benefits of investing in tolerant infrastructure has benefits that outweigh the costs. In a country with deep-enough snow to disrupt travel on a random few days every five? years then preparation costs don't outweigh the benefits. With climate change, infrastructure will probably be designed or retrofitted for warmer extremes. Regarding common sense, heard a conservative MP quote the 1976 and people going on holiday and don't panic, just go in your garden and swimming pool. Had little time for him - did 12,000 excess deaths occur in France c2013?

Scorpio8 · 20/07/2022 09:54

It's really not hard to understand why there was all the panic.

It's really not hard to understand why there was all the panic.

But it's very hard to understand what exactly you are posting about. Is it a question or an observation? And what exactly is the question or observation?

nomistake · 20/07/2022 09:57

I really don't understand all the anger and blame on MN about the heat. Who are 'people?' We know it was hot. Who are you blaming exactly?

The government could do lots! For example:

Having a joined up waste strategy scheme for the UK/each devolved nation, with everything being recycled that can be. Not each area doing its own thing with rubbish ending up on the roadside in Turkey or similar.

Investing in cycling and pedestrian infrastructure like the Netherlands, so we can cycle and walk safely.

Taking measures to reduce air pollution, for example banning the most polluting vehicles

Taxing airfares more and subsidising public transport more

Requiring businesses to turn off lights overnight if not needed

Investing in more renewable energy and not indulging in fracking

Just a few things that it is not doing at the moment. I am sure other posters can come up with far more.

It's just something that was said to me. That's why I said people don't have sense at all about these past two days.
I just having a moan.

The blame is because we've known climate change has been happening for years but have ignored it.

People won't change their lifestyles, even if everyone makes a few small changes it would make a difference, even if only at local level. Such as not having BBQs when it is tinder dry. Or leaving engines running for ages. Or having garden bonfires and polluting the local atmosphere.

A lot of common sense out the window these days.

But lots of people have no choice but to send their children to school so they can work to afford to feed and house their children.

I agree the government is not responding to climate change.

FigTreeInEurope · 20/07/2022 10:30

I live on the Solento, and what I agree with is other countries are better prepared. But, it's much more predictable than the UK. We get a block of 30c+ every year, it last four months, and the country is built around it. In winter we get a couple of weeks where it might snow, and very heavy rain, and again, everything is geared to take advantage of it. The British weather is unpredictable, so these spells of heat, or flooding take the country by suprise.

Scorpio8 · 20/07/2022 10:31

Yes people had to work but if school shut then it's your problem. The working parents yes it unfortunately hard. Some parents who don't work was just annoyed because they didn't want to be sit at home with their kids and don't are about their children health.

If schools don't have classrooms cool enough then shutting was the best decision.

Just about making sensible decisions and understanding why warnings were in place. You don't hear your feel.

Like I said a bigger picture to why the panic. Here they never prepare for extreme heat/snow anything like diseases. People can ignore news, deny everything but remember your not untouchable.
