Cat leads?!

Why? Just why? 🙈

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 20/07/2022 08:08

Why not?

HerbErtlinger · 20/07/2022 08:09

My sister has one for her house cat, he's a big softy and she's worried about the busy roads by her house so keeps him as a house cat but she wants him to be able to play and enjoy her unsecured garden. It works for them

JasmineVioletRose · 20/07/2022 08:11

It seems mean to me.
My cat would not tolerate a lead in a million years.
Why have "house cats" ?

It's not mean if that's what the cat is used to. Some people live in places unsuited to outdoor cats and this gives the cat a chance to be outside safely. I have outdoor cats that will go a walk without a harness/lead.

YouAndMeVsTheWorld · 20/07/2022 08:16

I live in a country where cats are an introduced species and really badly impact the native wildlife. More importantly he’s an adoption, he had a bad life, he’s now FIV+ it’s in his and every other cats interest to keep him protected. He can have lead time, he hangs out in the balcony no watches the native birds, he is a very very happy cat

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 20/07/2022 08:26

Because some of us have expensive breeds that would get stolen. Some prefer putting their cats on a lead rather then letting them out for fear they may get injured or killed.Others may not have a garden or the room to build a cat enclosure.

I would like my cat to have the best of both worlds and feel it’s a safer way.Our garden has no room for a massive enclosure as it’s full with furniture, a big pool, a shed and a trampoline.

If used from a kitten they can quickly adjust and love exploring. We take our British blue out on an extended lead in our garden and she absolutely loves it. I couldn’t care what others think I know my cat is very happy, healthy and loved.

Because, as I said, the roads next to her house are very dangerous and she wants an 'alive cat' not a 'dead cat'. He's very happy and very loved.

We had a cat lead for one cat. She was very attached to me and so if I went away for the weekend she came too. I’d use a lead when we were away. She was fairly happy on it, with a harness, not her collar. Cat #2 I wouldn’t have considered using a lead.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 20/07/2022 08:48

Why do you care? Surely you can find something better to be judgemental about, if that’s your thing.

RainbowsMoonbeams · 20/07/2022 08:52

We have one. Used it after an operation because we didn’t want her to wander off and hurt herself more.

Some countries cats are not allowed to roam freely, this is to protect wildlife. So a lead makes sense.

Just as dogs get stolen, some pure breed cats do too, so again, a lead may make sense to these people also.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 20/07/2022 08:54

@JasmineVioletRose This is a valid point so need to eye roll thanks.

Justonedayatatime11 · 20/07/2022 09:04

Because if I let my 12kg Savannah free roam, he'd be plastered across the front of the daily fail under the heading 'big cat on the loose' Wink

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 20/07/2022 09:08

Because there are people out there who are horrible to cats - poisoning them, shooting them, deliberately running them over, torturing them, and cat owners would rather their cats are safe, whilst still being able to go outside.
humans are not nice.

I have two house cats, one is a breed which is renowned for not being safe to be outdoors because they’re so daft. The other is a rescue cat and one condition of rescuing him was that he had to be kept inside. I’ve had cats for 30 years and these are my first house cats. Initially I thought it was cruel but have since realised that it’s a lot less cruel than the risk of injury or death which my previous cats experienced. It’s also safer for local wildlife.

SisyphusDad · 20/07/2022 09:20

I vaguely remember a Garfield cartoon strip in which Jon tries - and fails - to put a lead on him. The last frame went something like "Next he'll realise that icebergs were not meant for the Titanic."

emmathedilemma · 20/07/2022 09:49

One of my neighbours used one briefly when her cat had been ill and I think he wasn't allowed out for long or wasn't allowed to eat random stuff (other neighbours used to feed them treats) but it was only short term thing to avoid keeping him indoors all the time.

emmathedilemma · 20/07/2022 09:50

@Justonedayatatime11 you can't post comments like that and not provide a photo of the handsome beast!

EmbroidedFlowers · 20/07/2022 09:50

Why the eye roll OP? There's no need to be judgmental or rude, the previous posters are just answering your question. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Unfortunately some breeds get stolen and a lead can prevent this heartbreak, along with preventing traffic accidents etc. My cat is very happy as she gets the stimulation of the outside without the dangers. She has the best of both worlds and it works really well.

@Justonedayatatime11

any chance of a photo!! 🐱

Justonedayatatime11 · 20/07/2022 09:53

@emmathedilemma not the best photo I'm afraid!

Cat leads?!
EmbroidedFlowers · 20/07/2022 09:55

@Justonedayatatime11 12kg wow! And here's me thinking my 5kg ragdoll was big 😁

WinterMusings · 20/07/2022 09:57

"@JasmineVioletRose Don't ask a question, then roll your eyes when people answer you, it's SO rude.

I had leads for my two when I moved house because I wanted them to be safe exploring for a week or two.

is that ok with you?!?!

Tough if it's not really.

xsquared · 20/07/2022 09:57

Don't own one myself but would like to one day. I've seen cats on a lead going for walks and I can't see what is mean about that. If anything I think it's responsible and sensible.

Why are you confused about the expensive breed comment?

riesenrad · 20/07/2022 09:58

I've got a friend with two cats who keeps them in the house and takes them out for walks on leads.

This is because they've had three cats run over in the past. One tries to escape, one doesn't. Seems a bit mean for the one that doesn't want to be a house cat. But I sort of understand the reasoning if you've lost three cats. It is a bit of an illustration of having pets for your own benefit though, without really thinking about the welfare of the animal. Probably better a short happy life cut short by a car than a long cooped up life in a house.
