When I got home today at 3ish my cat was crying. He only ever does this when he's in distress. It doesn't look like he's drank anything today but I've seen him eat a bit. He's an indoor cat and my flat is very hot. I've just been out for a couple of hours, got home and he's crying again. I don't know what's wrong and I'm starting to really worry. He's washing himself a bit. I've made the flat as cool as I can. He won't let me near him really I thought about trying to make him cooler with a towel.

Oh poor thing. Look up signs of heatstroke and check against him, I'd also call the vets for advice.

If he eats wet food, you can mix a little water in with it.

Placing ice water in front of a fan can help too.

SanFranBear · 19/07/2022 19:36

I didn't want to read and run but I've not heard of this before. That being said, cats rarely make a lot of noise (outside of fighting/hunting) unless they're trying to tell people stuff so there's clearly something on their mind.

Do you have a lick-e-lix or similar that's quite liquid to get some fluid in if you're worried they're dehydrated? Or pop an icecube down for them to play with and they may lick it?

ilovebagpuss · 19/07/2022 19:36

If he is lying and panting that seems to be a sign of heat distress not sure about the miowing? If he feels up to grooming that's a good sign.
Can you get a fan on him?
Sometimes I put a slosh of the special cat milk in the water to make it more appealing?
Feel him all over gently make sure he's not hurt himself while you were out?

He might just be upset about the heat and letting you know about it, but equally you need to be sure he's not unwell from it or not in pain.

Alfixnm · 19/07/2022 19:39

Look, everyone here is well intentioned, but you really need to phone a vet, they will know the right questions to ask you to determine if there's something serious wrong or not. Cats often hide signs of illness so if he appears obviously distressed you need to take it seriously.

I do hope he's OK, but please call a vet.

Evenstar · 19/07/2022 19:43

I saw this earlier does anything sound similar?

Is my cat okay?? Please help
frugalkitty · 19/07/2022 19:44

If he's not drinking or showing interest in food it could be a blocked bladder. Please ring the vet this evening for advice as this is serious and can be fatal. Sorry to be dramatic but we lost our eldest boy to this last year and it took me a long time to forgive myself for not taking him to the vet until the next morning (although I think the ultimate outcome would have been the same in his case). Do ring the vet and speak to someone tonight, don't wait until the morning. Big hugs.

CharlotteOH · 19/07/2022 19:47

Call vet asap.

Cpuld be kidney issu, could be UTI, could be blocked bladder could be lots of things but the not weeing is dangerous

coffeecupsandfairylights · 19/07/2022 19:49

You need to ring your vet if you're concerned.

It could be anything from "being a cat" to something like a blocked bladder. Nobody here can tell you for sure either way.

TalkingToMyselfAgain · 19/07/2022 19:49

Cats get most of the fluids they need from their wet food. Leave clean, fresh water out each day, though. With a wet flannel or cloth, wipe your cats all over (particularly the pads on the paws). She will hate it but it will cool her.

Had cats for 42 years. My old (19) boy has been more vocal but I've done the things I'm suggesting, and he's settled down - he has the choice of going out whenever he likes

Playplayaway · 19/07/2022 20:14

I hope he's OK. Definitely get the vets advice.

Going forward, if this heat is going to be more common, you'll need to work out how to keep your flat cool enough for him. My cat is an outdoor cat and we barely see her in this weather as she spends her time outside in her favourite shady spots and we just take her food and water out to her. I can't imagine how she'd keep herself cool indoors.

alnawire · 19/07/2022 20:17

I would be taking him to the vet.

Playplayaway · 19/07/2022 20:17

Oh and I make our cat a sort of wayery chicken soup with cooked chicken breast chopped finely and added to a bowl of water. Also my vet said don't put their water near their food and have plenty of bowls of water spread around.

Mellowyellow222 · 19/07/2022 20:49

Please phone your vet. It might be the heat (which could be serious) it might be something else.

but your poor cat is clearly in distress. My vet is amazing and will often give advice over the phone

Sunflowers2047 · 19/07/2022 21:42

Thanks everyone. Just in the waiting room at the emergency vet now. They wouldn't let me in with him? Hand hold please I'm on my own here 😭

OP posts:
PeloAddict · 19/07/2022 21:44

Hand hold here

SunshineRoo27 · 19/07/2022 21:46

Hand hold, hope he's okay

ThierryEnnui · 19/07/2022 21:46

Hand hold OP! I took my boy in recently with similar symptoms and it was a very easily treated UTI. He was back to normal the next day.

Cats are much more tolerant of heat than you might think. Sending love to you and your boy!

NotSoSlimShady8 · 19/07/2022 21:46

Hope He’s ok 💗 and hand hold for you …. what did the vet say upon arrival? Or have they not said anything yet?

Hapoydayz · 19/07/2022 21:46

Hope he is ok

Sunflowers2047 · 19/07/2022 21:48

Thank you everyone. They've said he has suspected heatstroke and needs IV fluids and monitoring overnight. I'm so glad I brought him in. They said he should be fine though.

Mellowyellow222 · 19/07/2022 21:48

hope He’s okay. He’s in the right place. And they bounce back pretty quick

Mellowyellow222 · 19/07/2022 21:49

Cross posted. Wonderful news!

he is lucky to have you😻

ThierryEnnui · 19/07/2022 21:50

Good news OP, he’s in the right place and being looked after overnight. You did absolutely the right thing to take him in. Have a good night’s sleep ❤️

I've been doing this 3x a day, my cat loves a sponge bath though 🤣

I've been lining his cat bed with a damp towel too as he likes that.

Mixing water with his food too.
