What’s your average daily spend on your smart meter?

StressfulBedtimes · 17/07/2022 21:12

Our gas isn’t currently hooked up to the smart meter (don’t ask, I can’t tell you how many emails have gone back and forth and still it’s not working 🙄) so this isn’t going to be entirely accurate, but we currently use a lot more energy than the national average, Uswitch have given us a C rating so it’s obviously quite a lot more and I’m just not sure why

Our smart meter is here for showing around £3.50 per day for electricity, what do all yours say?

Also any tips to reduce we may not have thought of? Our bill has just gone up again to nearly £400pcm and we just can not afford that at all!

Summer months between 60 and 85p per day. Winter months between 1.20 and 1.35 a day.

Jojobees · 17/07/2022 21:16

I put the washing machine and dishwasher on delay so they come on overnight at cheaper rates, I don’t really do much else though.

Svara · 17/07/2022 21:18

We don't have a smart meter but the electricity part of my June bill was £38.31/30 days, so £1.28 a day. Hot water is solar/gas and there are two of us.

About £1.25 a day. 2 bed house. 3 people. Summer months. I’m impressed at the poster above being under £1.

SonSonSon · 17/07/2022 21:20

Average £2-£3 at the mo

Svara · 17/07/2022 21:21

It's going to depend on your rate though, we are on a fix 15% above the cap but standing charge is only 24p.

NiceTwin · 17/07/2022 21:23

49p, we are currently running entirely off the solar panels and battery storage overnight.

PrincessSpanky · 17/07/2022 21:24

We are between £3.50-£5.00 a day. We have no gas, so it includes 4-6 showers a day. And cooking every day. We also have 2 bearded dragons that has lights on each day.

Hellocatshome · 17/07/2022 21:24

About £2 to £3 on a weekday for electricity. Can be up to £5 on a weekend when everyone is on games consoles and laptops and DH is doing various things with power tools.

StressfulBedtimes · 17/07/2022 21:27

Wow ok I see why we have such a low rating there is a huge difference here

But how?!
I feel like I spend my life turning plug sockets off, we don’t have a tumble dryer or dishwasher - what an I missing??

I'm not but my sister has pay as you go and when I asked her she spent £17 on electric and £3 gas.

Her showers electric so the gas is just for cooking really and washing up etc.

She has one dc, they're home a lot in the day and whilst they aren't living by candlelight she's careful..Tries to use the hob instead of the oven, uses the slow cooker etc.

My bills are low too, I pay quarterly based on meter readings. My last bill was £220 for 3 months. I don't understand why ours are OK when so many seem to be straggling with huge bills right now but I think a large part of it is.due to growing up absolutely skint and things like.only using the tumble dryer when it's necessary, unplugging unused appliances , not letting hot taps run.for ages or taking 30 minute showers etc are second nature. 🙃

Sockets off when not in use. This includes our oven, hob and hood. No lingering in the shower. Lights off, dishwasher and washing machine but only when full loads, only boil what is needed in the kettle etc.

darlingdodo · 17/07/2022 21:51

About £3 a day and I can't see any way if cutting it back. 2 loads of laundry a week, DH WFH so has computer gubbins on, elderly DP has TV on for about 12 hours. Fridge freezer and second freezer, dishwasher once a day, minimal lighting (2 X table lamps for a couple of hours), most cooking done on hob and air fryer. Spartan use of chargers, small appliances, only boil enough water for one cup etc.

TuftyMarmoset · 17/07/2022 21:53

Today we’ve spent £1.10 on electricity and nothing on gas. This week it’s been a total of £7.99 on electricity and £1.90 on gas. But obviously it’s summer so we don’t have the heating on.

bluebellsandcustard · 01/08/2022 20:59

I'm really confused!!! I struggle to get under £5 per day, that's with everything off, 1 load of washing, 2 freezers, 1 fridge. No heating, all lights off when not needed.

Is £1 a day still possible on todays rates???

Pinkflipflop85 · 01/08/2022 21:05

We're averaging around £2 a day in electric at the moment - thanks to it being the schol holidays with lots of extra PlayStation time!

I don’t understand either! We average about £6 a day when working from home, usually one washing load but obviously no heating… just the usual stuff turned on. When we work in the office it’s about £3 a day.

Well if you have gas and electric then just the standing charges cost £22 a month on the standard variable rate, just under £14 if no gas. So I doubt it.

My June and July bills were about £55, so less than £2 a day. My standing charges are £15, usage £40, so it would be incredibly difficult to get this much lower. We have one fridge freezer, two washes a week at 30 degrees.

Eviebeans · 01/08/2022 21:19

Last week it averaged at £2.35 a day. We only have electricity and a tiny house.

darlingdodo · 01/08/2022 21:19

Everybody using less than £3 a day electricity, are you on variable rate or a rate fixed when prices were cheaper? I can't get our spend lower than about £3.50 - it's already about £1.50 when I come downstairs in the morning and I can't for the life of me work out what's using the energy overnight. Most of the time during the day unless I'm boiling a kettle usage is 8 to 12p an hour.

Are you on variable or a fixed rate? On variable half of that would be standing charges, so it seems incredibly low.

Tuesday598 · 01/08/2022 21:22

£2-3 per day for gas and electricity combined. We are on a fixed rate though and lock in prior to the huge rises

Eviebeans · 01/08/2022 21:24

On a fixed rate, fixed in April.
Cost at the moment is 4p.
Spikes if using kettle, toaster or microwave for example.

Closedlips · 01/08/2022 21:25

£1.50 for electric and 60p for gas showing on my smart meter for the day currently.

Svara · 01/08/2022 21:25

@darlingdodo Ours is a fix 15% higher than the April cap by yearly usage, but not much different at the moment as we are only paying a total of 51p a day standing charges but (higher unit rates).
