Spooky films for a pre teen

Dd12. Virtually unheard of night just her and me and dh as sister is out for a sleepover.

She wants a spooky/horror type film. She likes Tim Burton Sleepy Hollow and woman in black. Quite liked that one with the Amish community and the monsters (Signs?).

I am ok with a 15 if it's 15 for language (as her bestie swears like a trucker so that ships sailed) but don't want proper gore.

I have Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon prime plus iplayer and all4. Would prefer not to rent one if I can help it. DH has suggested Lost Boys but I loathe that film for a number of reasons.

Ideas?

The Others?

Sixth sense
The others

Delicatessen (cert 15) if you're OK with subtitles

What about Scream? It's currently on netflix. We watched it recently with teen and preteen and had a good laugh at how stupid it is.

lugeforlife · 15/07/2022 16:46

I think she'll get grumpy re subtitles and dh certainly will.

I think 6th sense is a good shout. She may like the others too but possibly a bit slow for her. It's a good shout though

Thanks!

Ohhhh @TheCanyon is Scream not a bit too much?

I saw it in the cinema and I loved it but haven't seen it since. That would be a great shout tbf as she'd love the silliness.

Van helsing if she likes a lot of action and is easily bored? Or tremors for old school comedy

Rosewaterblossom · 15/07/2022 16:51

Hocus pocus? Silly fun 🙂

AlwaysLatte · 15/07/2022 16:52

My son liked Bunks at that age.

Pr1nc3ssP3rdy · 15/07/2022 16:53

At that age I loved The Hole. Very spooky but still fine for a preteen.

Cotswoldmama · 15/07/2022 16:57

A quiet place and the newer one are good and not too scary or maybe the craft? The old craft is much better than the new one.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 15/07/2022 16:57

BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. No gore or sex and very little bad language, it's just spooky and scary. (The 1999 one, not the one from the mid 2010s, that was crap.)

Greenfrog78 · 15/07/2022 17:00

Lost boys

lugeforlife · 15/07/2022 17:02

A friend recommended Quiet Place but I dont think it's on Netflix anymore, I could only find it for rent on Prime when I looked (and I'm being a bit tight but we have 3 streaming services and I really don't want to have to pay for something Smile).

I shall give her the choice. She'll probably want to put on the Twilight dvd she got in the charity shop. That's not happening.

I was 12 when I watched The Ring. It freaked me out a bit, more the creepy video tape itself than the girl.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 15/07/2022 17:08

Coraline.

My adult children are still traumatised by it and they were well able for scary. They were 9 and 11 when it came out. Most of their peers are similar.

Did you actually read the op? 🤣

Thelnebriati · 15/07/2022 17:46

She might like Interview With a Vampire.

Nah its not bad actually. I hadn't seen it in about 20 years and thought it might be too much but it's fine, not gory at all.

lugeforlife · 16/07/2022 08:43

So we watched The Hole but maybe a different one from the one meant here! The Kiera knightly one. It was a 15 and was quite gruesome in places with a bit of sex and Laurence Foxes penis (she covered her head for those bits).

Way worse was the new Persuasion though. That was real horror.

And I think she would love Interview with a Vampire next. She loves anything Vampire, she has this weird retro crush on Tom Cruise. What's not to love

I second this. Not the Keira Knightly one.

Fright Night is a good one. There is an 80s one and a more recent one. The recent one has Colin Farrell and Russell Brand. It's a 15 but not bad. Two geeky teenage boys believe their new neighbour is a vampire. It's funny and teenage-y but a good few scares. Very entertaining.

dazzlingdeborahrose · 16/07/2022 12:51

The Watcher n the Woods.
The Haunting of Hill House (1963 not the terrible liam neeson one)
Both oldies but both goodies

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 16/07/2022 12:57

My daughter loved The lost boys.

Lost boys

😂

To be fair I would have suggested this if not for the op. Can’t imagine ‘loathing’ it, it’s so 80s. And even if you loathe it dd loves vampires so might well love it!

Maybe some of the Stephen King stuff would suit? Some of it isn’t bad/gory, stuff like Carrie/Firestarter etc. I would say Scream would be ok if she’s fairly sensible, it’s so daft it’s not even scary, and it’s a great really fun watch. I watched one called Cry Wolf with my teen niece when she stayed over not long ago - bunch of kids at a boarding school and someone’s trying to kill them all off. Can’t actually remember what happened but she enjoyed it! I’d second Fright Night too.
