Anyone's DC due to go on something like this? School hasn't commented. Is it sensible?!

I am sure it will be fine. They can always find some shade if they feel too hot.

keiratwiceknightly · 15/07/2022 12:28

We've cancelled similar trips next week. There's more possible shade at AT than our theme park though.

loudbatperson · 15/07/2022 12:31

Our DD has a trip to Thorpe park, and we are in a 40 predicted area.

I am waiting to hear from the school, I expect some sort of communication now the red warning has been issued.

Well I wouldn't go. The rides will be too hot to sit on surely?

JanuaryFebruaryMarch · 15/07/2022 12:38

I think it's possible theme parks won't be able to open.
Trains go slower due to risk of rails buckling same probably applies to rollercoasters?

Alicetheowl · 15/07/2022 12:44

But they have theme parks in Florida and Southern Europe?

Glittertwins · 15/07/2022 12:47

Thorpe Park is very lacking in shade!

BirdsOfFeathers · 15/07/2022 14:07

Thanks for the responses.

Surely it will be awful for the people who are working there? And will they be able to concentrate enough to make sure things are safe?!

I’ve been to Alton towers in the heat - nothing like as sunny as forecast, but still hot. It’s no fun. Lots of the ride queues aren’t in shade, and half the rides broke down. I’m a big theme park junkie but not a chance would I go in 35 degree heat.

Sadless · 15/07/2022 14:22

My sons going alton towers on Monday with school had a email this afternoon saying suncream and hats please. Cant see it being a good trip really if the heats that bad and they might shut half of the rides. I am abit worried about it now.

Sal

Tangential question (because they'll have to have bags with suncream, water, hat, etc) - what do you do with bags when on rides? Is there somewhere to leave them safely?

Our school, in London, has cancelled trips on Tuesday due to updated warning. Not safe for staff or students. One of the activity parks has said it is likely to close itself anyway to protect staff.

whoneedssleepanyway101 · 15/07/2022 14:59

My son has Drayton manor on Monday as it stands at the moment trip is still going ahead. I'm a bit nervous about him going tbh as he doesn't cope brilliantly in the heat. But i'm hoping he will be sensible, wear his hat and ive told him he must find shade if he starts to feel too hot or unwell

countdowntonap · 15/07/2022 15:51

I work in a secondary school and we’ve just cancelled out Alton Towers trip next Tue. There’s a red warning and Alton Towers have transferred the tickets. They said school after school have been calling to cancel.

Lockers or at the side where you exit the ride. That's all we've ever done. As another poster said people manage just fine in Florida going round the parks. The only shaded parts there are the rides and shows inside. Buy a bottle strap for a bottle of water to keep hands free and a handheld fan if necessary. Not sure if you can get them over here but the one I used in Florida had the option to put water in to create a mist of cooling water at the same time. It is more cumbersome to cart about though although it does have a strap for around the neck

Rebelmcstreettuff · 15/07/2022 16:05

Had an email from school yesterday re Alton Towers trip on Monday to bring water bottles, suncream, cap etc so I ordered new stuff from amazon prime yesterday.
Just picked him up and it's now cancelled.
Has anything changed from yesterday to today re weather warning?

veneeroftheyear · 15/07/2022 16:07

The warning has been upgraded to red.

lunar1 · 15/07/2022 16:08

Ds went this week, not nearly as hot as it's going to be. He queued for one ride for 2 hours, no shade. I'd be cancelling if it was next week.

Ilikewinter · 15/07/2022 16:12

Id be surprised if any school trips are going ahead, would the teachers want the responsibility of the health of the kids when they end up with sunburn and heat stroke ?

Dreamsofus · 15/07/2022 16:12

We did Chessington last year in 35 degrees and it was horrific - never again. We had also done Legoland in a similar temp last year and should have learnt then that it’s not pleasant with the heat, queues for roses and food/drink etc.

WaitinginVain · 15/07/2022 16:15

Not a theme park but school residential (Year 6), all outdoor activities, due to start on Monday and getting quite concerned now.

loudbatperson · 15/07/2022 16:22

Our DDs school has just confirmed the Thorpe Park trip is being postponed until the start of the new school year.

They are also doing no inform next week, closing early and moving all outdoor activities indoor.

Alicetheowl · 15/07/2022 16:37

But what do you think Italian, Spanish, Greek Australian and Turkish children do? This is normal for them, they don't melt in the sunlight like Dracula!

Letsmoveon · 15/07/2022 18:06

@Alicetheowl the difference though is that children in those countries are acclimatised to the heat (well as much as a person can be). Children in England are not living in heatwave conditions as a normal part of the country’s weather pattern.

AdobeWanKenobi · 15/07/2022 19:12

This is Stratosphere in Las Vegas, a place where average daily temperature in July is 104.
I think Alton Towers will be just fine.
