Schools and next weeks weather

The email I’m thankful to see. Due to being in London and on red alert for next weeks weather my kids primary is giving the option to collect from 1pm. They will also have a longer break time in the morning and keep them in at hotter times. Anybody else being given an option?

No yet but think it’s very sensible.

Quornflakegirl · 15/07/2022 11:35

Mine can wear their own clothes and limiting outdoor play.

sheildmaiden · 15/07/2022 11:38

If only my primary school would do the same. It's sports day next week and they are hell bent on going ahead with it.

Secondary - finishing at 12.20 pm and have been in PE kits since Monday.

SpottyStripyDuvet · 15/07/2022 11:58

Just received a letter from our primary. They are doing non uniform and outlined how they will manage playtime to use shaded areas, let them use the indoor, discourage too much running around.

itsgettingweird · 15/07/2022 11:58

Seems odd to finish at the hottest part of the day so children are travelling home during it.

I agree action needs taking because it's a risk to health red warning. But for many parents that also means taking our toddlers and babies during the hottest part in either the direct sun or a car.

Sirzy · 15/07/2022 11:59

Sounds sensible, the forecasts here look like from 2 onwards it will be hottest

I agree, seems weird. For my Y9 this would mean a 20 min walk home in the hottest part of the day.

BlackeyedSusan · 15/07/2022 12:03

Just emailed school with the news. Not heard from them since last week when it was bring in water bottles and no ties or blazers.

Sweetpea84 · 15/07/2022 12:04

I always find it’s hotter 2pm onwards

Forecast to be 39 here - secondary finishing at lunchtime (with extra homework) and can wear PE kit instead of ties, blazers etc.

JimMorrisonsleathertrousers · 15/07/2022 12:12

They're allowed to go to school in their PE kits and will only have cold options at lunch. Other than that, business as usual.

I've made the decision to keep them all at home.

Daisytomhope · 15/07/2022 12:19

Ours is secondary school - so the options been given is uniform no blazer / tie or pe kit on Monday and Tuesday.
They're also changing the menu so it's more cold based than normal.
Told to send in refillable water bottles, sun cream etc.
No outdoor pe during hottest times.

itsgettingweird · 15/07/2022 12:46

Sweetpea84 · 15/07/2022 12:04

Physically feeling maybe.

But UV is its strongest between 11-2.

Hence why 1pm is a daft time to be encouraging people to be travelling outside - especially when it's likely to mean bringing younger more vulnerable children.

It's always necessary to act - but those actions are meant to make it safer and reduce the risks.

Ralphswife · 15/07/2022 13:27

Our secondary finishing at 1pm with option for children to remain in school if necessary. Common sense prevails.

looking at the forecast, the hottest part of the day is from mid-afternoon here.

BeenToldComputerSaysNo · 15/07/2022 19:59

We can keep them home, pick up at lunchtime or pick up at end of day. PE kit and indoor play, bar some water play to cool down with (primary).

Navigatingnewwaters · 15/07/2022 20:05

Nothing

Ignoranceisbliss44 · 15/07/2022 20:07

Roll on Wednesday! That's all I can say.

Gettingthereslowly2020 · 15/07/2022 20:08

The only message I've had from school says they don't expect children to wear ties and to make sure they have suncream and a sun hat. They've said they'll cancel PE lessons and try to keep the children in the shade as much as possible.

I'm actually thinking about keeping my child off school on Mon and Tues. I'm not soft and my child has never had a single day off school (she's in Year 5 now) but I'm quite worried about the heat and the threat to life warning. I think she'd be fine in school but I'm more worried about waiting for and getting on two buses to and from school (we moved house and now live quite far away).

Whiskers4 · 15/07/2022 21:35

Primary. Own clothes. They have to go in with water bottle, and school asking they have sun lotion and hat on for walk to school. Will be kept inside and a few of the hottest classes will be given time in hall which us normally cooler. Regular intervals for drinking and topping up.

ShriekingShack · 15/07/2022 22:12

Primary school and forecast 38-39 for Mon & Tues. PE kits allowed those days. Water bottle, sun hat and sun cream have been mandatory for weeks as it’s been high 20’s and over 30 numerous times already. They’re not allowed outside on Mon/Tues (already 2 days this term a couple of weeks back) and been told they will be keeping it calm inside. School is a new build with reasonable air flow apparently. Not concerned apart from the walk home and sleeping those nights!!!

OppsUpsSide · 15/07/2022 22:19

We’ve been given the option of not sending in, which I will take as I will be in work (teacher) and what usually happens is DC’s school is ‘open’ but when you get there they try and turn you away and if that doesn’t work they end up asking you to collect them early. DM is on pick up duty for me, I’d rather they just all stayed home.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 15/07/2022 22:20

@sheildmaiden
I've read that Headteachers are being urged to cancel sports days next week.
Apologies for not providing a link.

Icanseeclearlynow12 · 15/07/2022 22:24

I wish my daughter’s primary school was giving the option of not going in, she really struggles in the heat. No other parents seem to be concerned but I am worried, would be easier to keep her cool at home

Dontlickthetrolley · 15/07/2022 22:31

Primary here, in a 36/37 area, head teacher lives in a 37/38 area. We don't have to send them in if we don't want to, they've even made a form for us to fill in, so we don't need to phone up. Back in as normal Wednesday and break up Friday.
