Is this an expression used round your way? If so, where are you? Am in Edinburgh and no but friends in Gtr Manc, yes (much to the hilarity of the DCs)

OP posts:

They used to be called louts, yobs and oiks round here. Or possibly guttersnipes.

Still are, if it's me describing them Grin

Bouledeneige · 14/07/2022 22:09

Not sure if it still is but it was a thing when my DC were at secondary - 5 years ago. It meant - as far as this old person understands it - a white MC kid playing it like a cool black guy. Sorry if I've said anything wrong there. I'm a bit out of touch.

What are Roadmen? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4552922-what-are-roadmen

stillherenow · 14/07/2022 22:22

They're what I would have called chav back in the day but now there's a subtle distinction between a chav and a roadman from what I can understand .

When I read the OP I assumed it was a term to refer to the people who do roadworks.

Me too @WarOnSlugs Grin

As in "road men's lamp" or "road men's tent". I thought this thread was going to be about what happened to those?

This is rather baffling. I mean most of us are "on road" at various times each day when we go out?

It means you are on your way, or out and about. Or 'working'.

Roadmen is where the 'man's not hot' thing came from because they never remove their coats. Because they have hoods and contain their product (crack), most probably.

stillherenow · 14/07/2022 22:29

Roadmen pretend to be all druggie. And yet we had a guy selling drugs for a while a few doors down and the kids that would rock up to buy it (and hang around waiting on my drive 😡) were all quite posh studenty types who apologised nicely when I went out and asked them to move along there's a dear. No roadmen in sight

Starlightstarbright1 · 14/07/2022 22:30

Yes by teen .. Derbyshire

PinkButtercups · 14/07/2022 22:30

Yes SE.

But mainly wanna be roadmen. Hands down their pants using different accents.. 🤔.

It's quite embarrassing really.

goldensilk · 14/07/2022 22:32

Not heard this in Liverpool. I have an 18yo but he's probably just outgrown a lot of slang. I would say a roadman was a chap who fixed the tarmac and operated the stop/go signs

NoSquirrels · 14/07/2022 22:37

Now seems to be used to describe white teen boys who dress like the original roadmen but the nearest to drugs they have got is smuggling their Mams vape down the park to have a go.

This is how it’s used here, in the midlands. It’s a derogatory term or insult - pretty sure the boys themselves don’t describe themselves as road men.

Lacey247 · 14/07/2022 22:52

To be ‘on road’ is someone who sells drugs. A roadman is a drug dealer. The meaning has changed a lot over the years and is now bizarrely used my white middle class kids to describe anyone wearing a tracksuit

Trinity65 · 14/07/2022 22:53

South East London

Teenage son mentioned seeing some Roadmen down an alley, between some shops and probably dealing .
I thought he meant Men who worked on the road, like to repair them and the like before he mentioned seeing one . 😆

Louise0701 · 14/07/2022 22:54
